DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier
League.
Shibdon Pond, Blaydon. Sun. 28th Nov.
Sunderland narrowed the gap on lead-leaders Morpeth in the Senior Men's
Division 1 competition, after yesterday's third DP Furniture Express North
Eastern Harrier League fixture, at a damp Shibdon Pond, Blaydon. The Wearsiders
comfortably defeated their rivals in yesterday's team event, reducing the
deficit to just one point, at the halfway point of the season. Rob Walker
of North Shields Poly was the individual winner from the slow pack, pulling
away from the early leader, Mark Donkin of Sunderland on the 2nd of the
three circuits. Last season's North of England Under 17 champion, Lewis
Timmins of Gosforth, took third place from the medium pack, ahead of Morpeth's
David Swinburne. Terry Wall of Morpeth was fastest overall finishing in
18th position, after overhauling his nearest challenger, Gavin Massingham
of Sunderland on the final lap.
Maxine Czarnecka of Chester Le Street easily won the Senior Womens'
event from the slow pack, and also clocked the fastest time. 7secs slower
was fast pack runner, Denise Todd of Durham, who moved through to 10th
place. North Shields Poly won the team event, extending their lead at the
top of the table.
Mary Ferrier of Gateshead. the current Northern Under 17 champion,
won the Junior Womens' event from the fast pack, a feat also achieved by
Northern 800m champion, Stacey Smith of Tynedale in the Under 15 event.
Not to be outdone, Ben Chadwick of Shildon also moved through from the
fast pack, to win the Under 15 Boys' event. Easiest winner of the day was
Gateshead's Sigorney Bell in the Under 13 age-group, with second place
going to fast pack runner, Kate Avery of Shildon, who was ranked 2nd in
Britain over 1000m and 1500m on the track, during the summer.

Additional Comments: Most of report used. Weather was very changeable,
driving rain at times, not helped by strongish wind. 272 finishers in Senior
Mens' race (272 G Routledge 54:09), and another good turn-out of 70 Senior
Women. Newcastle Utd home match (kick off 2.00pm), did not really affect
Mens' field. Ted Joynson started but was soon tailed off. He took short
cut on lap 1 and dropped out after end of circuit (when lapped by most
of field). Ray Laverick finished 260th (43:15). Angela Hunter finished
23rd in SW race (19:48). In Junior Womens' event, early leader Sam Crowe
dropped out shortly after the 1st circuit. I suspect she has been injured,
as this popular figure has been noticeably absent from most of this season's
other fixtures. In same event Lynsey Dodsworth finished 19th (22:53) and
Chloe Gilmore had a bitter run in 22nd (23:15).
Misinformed stats relating to Kate Avery (for 1000m read 1200m - see
Round-up). Heaton finished 3rd team in Division 3 (Claremont were 2nd).

included: Top ten performers were: 100: 2 Yusuf Aliu 11.24; 4 Richard Kilty
11.43 200: 4 Aliu 22.92 HJ: 1 Phil Collins 1.90. Also included
were October 2004 Road Race rankings. Somehow I must have missed the info
on a Half Marathon in Reims where Steve Hepples (65:26) tops the list and
Neil Wilkinson (65:39) lies 4th. Unfortunately results were edited from
NEHL and Lunchtime Hdp (making some fastest times look odd) and Brampton

DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier
League.
Riverside, Chester Le Street. Sun. 21st Nov.
Morpeth Harriers went to the top of Senior Mens' Division 1, after
yesterday's 2nd DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier League meeting,
at a cold and damp Riverside, Chester le Street. Morpeth are now 2pts clear
of defending champions, Sunderland who could only finish 4th this time.
Morpeth provided the race winner, Tom Ranger who was too good for the rest
of the slow pack field. The former North Eastern Counties' 1500m champion,
extended his advantage on each of the 4 laps, coming home exactly a minute
ahead of Chester Le Street youngster, Mark Atkin who just held off another
junior, Nathan Shrubb of Morpeth for 2nd place. Mark Brown, who finished
7th from the medium pack was 2nd fastest, followed by another Morpeth Harrier,
Terry Wall who was 19th from the fast pack.
Morpeth also did well in the Under 17 event, with Anthony Colwell winning
the race and Jonathan Young and Ross Floyd clocking the fastest times.
They were however, narrowly defeated by Gateshead in the team event.
Denise Todd of Durham comfortably won the Senior Womens' race, ahead
of clubmate and fellow veteran, Debbie Hales. Recent Derwentside 10M winner,
Tracy Brown finished 3rd.
Dianne Henaghan of Chester Le Street clocked the fastest time. finishing
5th from the fast pack. Chester Le Street won the team event from defending
champions, Durham City. North Shields Poly still head the table.
Morpeth's Delyth James, running from the fast pack, moved through to
win the Junior Womens' race, her time bettering that of any Seniors competing.
2003 North Eastern Under 13 champion, Laura Weightman of Morpeth, won the
Under 15 Girls' event, but the most eye-catching performance was that of
Blaydon's Helen Girtig, who clocked the fastest time, finishing 5th from
the fast pack.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, but cut off at end. Cold and
frosty in morning, but rain for first hour of meeting, caused hard frost
to churn up. 260 finishers in Senior Mens' event and a record (I think)
73 finishers in Senior Womens' race. Mark Brown had made up 7secs on Ranger
after lap 3. Several athletes (apart from George Routledge and D Horne)
completed the weekend "double" including Phil Walker (141st in 32:04),
and Lisa Walker (SL) (33rd in 18:30). Other personalities taking part
(actual times listed) were: SM: 123 Rob Hand 31:39 (his first race for
a long time); 250 Ray Laverick 44:31 SW: 46 L Brown 19:06 JW:
14 S Evans 17:53; 22 N Dawson 18:33; 29 L Dodsworth 19:14; 30 C Gilmore
22:14
As lap was short of 2M, the handicaps for each age-group were (or should
have been): U13: 1:20 U15: 1:30 U17/SW: 2:20 SM: 2:30/5:00.
There seemed to be some confusion. According to Adam Harwood, Girtig ran
"out of her skin" in the U15 Girls' event. It certainly was a surprise
to me.
Heaton performed well to finish 2nd in Division 3 (Claremont 3rd) and
lie joint 2nd overall. Counters were: 84 Par Bhogal 35:47; 154 Jeff Wilson
37:38; 158 Scott McEntee 37:50; 167 Ted Baty 38:06; 192 Mal Gibson 39:06;
195 Chris Ward 39:12; 215 Allen Mulliss 40:18; 260 George Routledge
59:16 (11mins behind 259th). Sadly no Women took part.

Brampton to Carlisle 10M Road Race.
Sat. 20th Nov.
Edinburgh University student, AC Muir won the 53rd Wm Coulthard &
Co Ltd sponsored Brampton to Carlisle Road Race on Saturday, taking 81secs
off his previous best time.
In the ideal conditions (cool with little wind) Matt Whitfield of Bingley
took an early lead over the 510 strong field, closely followed by Stewy
Bell of Chester Le Street, Simon Booth of Borrowdale and Muir. Booth was
the first to lose contact at 3M and Bell was dropped approaching halfway
(24:47). Muir made his bid for victory after 10km soon opening up a 50m
lead. The advantage was increased to nearly 200m at the finish line at
the Carlisle Sands Centre. Whitfield took second place ahead of a revived
Booth, with Bell in 4th.
Host club Border, retained the team title.
International Cross Country runner, Hayley Haining easily won the Womens'
race, the former City of Glasgow athlete coming home over 2mins ahead of
2003 winner Louise Gardner. of Lancaster. Sandra Banney, successful in
1997 and 1999, was the leading veteran in 3rd. In 4th place, Judith Nutt
of Elswick, the North Eastern champion for the past 3 seasons and 2nd in
2003, improved her personal best by over a minute.

Additional Comments: Most of report used, but refererence to Judith
Nutt omitted. Partly in AW format, as the results took some time as like
other years, there were many (unfortunately not Gerry Shirley) inside standard
(s). 510 finishers (Hubbard 510th). Results courtesy of Graham Fecitt.
Lead car ride courtesy of David Farrell. Chris Sampson listed as 21st,
but definitely not him or any other Morpeth runner. M65 winner was a "ringer"
(Journal withdrew result). David Swinburne was with leaders for first 1.5M.
I gather 8th placer missed start. He moved up to 5th at one time ahead
of Swinburne but must have faded. Never saw 5th placed runner throughout,
until the finish line. He must have come through strongly. Mile splits
were: 4:37, 9:49, 14:52, 19:48, 24:47, 29:48, (30:51 10km); 34:45, 39:49,
44:53. Stewie Bell's 10km of 31:05approx, was his fastest for a while.

to unclear carbon copies. Not a great turn-out especially in older age-groups.
Star event was U17 High Jump, with Sam Coleby clearing personal best height,
losing on countback to Pottinger (ranked 2nd in 2004 U15 rankings). Good
performance also by Philip Brown. Bob Smoult ran 50m twice (with SM/SW)

Additional Comments: Only result sent, as I waited to check Low Fell
website if any alterations from original version. Unfortunately there were
a few, including times of Steve White and Mark McNally, whose numbers were
missed from recording sheet on day ! Someone actually sent in report
(published on 19th), but not sure who ? Fiona Turley (a good performance
here) and K Beaumont are now members of Heaton H. Weather was cold and
quite a strong wind blowing. Mark McNally was off 12:00, Steve White off
11.30 and Redshaw only off 11.00. Fiona Lothian was off 10:50. Star performer
was Ted Joynson, who started about 12mins early, and finished 69th
out of the 73 finishers with a time of 44mins 12secs. However, he incurred
the wrath of the police as he was "running" in the middle of the road.

Heaton Harriers Memorial Road Races.
Town Moor/Exhibition Park, Newcastle upon Tyne. Sun. 14th Nov.
Tommy Brannon gained his first major Road Race win as a Senior, when
sprinting to victory at yesterday's Heaton Harriers Town Moor Memorial
10km. The North Shields Poly athlete, who was outstanding as a teenager
20 years ago, took a lengthy break from the sport, before returning to
competition 2 seasons ago. In the gusty conditions, Newcastle University
student, John Murray soon headed the 300-strong field, the largest for
over 10years, with Brannon and leading veteran, David Robertson in close
pursuit. Murray held a 10m advantage at halfway (16:29) over Brannon and
Robertson, but the lead was not extended and as Brannon closed on Murray
in the final 400m, the result of the race was decided on a sprint to the
line. The margin of victory was 3m, with Robertson close behind in third.
In a highly competitive team event, Durham University led by Mat Hann in
6th, came out on top from Elswick and North Shields Poly.
Australian Lauren Shelley ended a six month visit to Britain, by easily
winning the Womens' race finishing in 16th place overall. Travelling from
her base in the Lake District, Shelley, 14th in the recent BUPA Great North
Run, took an early lead coming home over 3.5mins clear of 2003 winner,
Angela Hunter of Jarrow and Hebburn. Shelley also bettered Hunter's previous
figures by a massive 1min 43secs. Emma Waterhouse of Durham University
took third place ahead of leading veteran, Heather Lambert, who led North
Shields Poly to the team title.
In the Junior events, Sam Duffy of Gateshead (Under 17) and Laura Weightman
of Morpeth (Under 15) (the current North Eastern Under 13 Cross Country
champion), both set course records. Natalie Dawson of Morpeth gained her
first Road Race win in the Junior Womens' event and clubmate Steph Goodfellow
was successful in the Under 13 race. Jackson Creegan of Gateshead won the
Junior Mens' race, gaining victory at this venue for the third successive
year. Anthony Coldwell of Morpeth (Under 17), Richard Cunningham of Birtley
(Under 15) and Greg Ritchie of Jarrow (Under 13), were the other male winners.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Conditions dry but very windy
in exposed parts of course. 303 finishers in 10km (last time ignoring Ted
J was 68:24). Good turn-out but disappointed at lack of "elite" runners.
The AN Other was actually R Stabler of Morpeth who ran in the number of
an absent clubmate. This knocked Morpeth from 3rd to 7th. They would have
won if Andrew Lawrence had counted ! In Junior Womens' race, K Murray
missed start (I think they started early here as they were off before Ted
J, who was set off at 10.29, 31mins before main race. He came home in 94mins
9secs (47:00 at halfway). Ray Laverick finished 230th. Other "personalties"

Fruit Bowl 7 Trail Race.
Gibside Estate. Sun.7th Nov.
Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street, was a comfortable winner of yesterday's
8th Fruit Bowl 7 Trail Race, in the grounds of Gibside Estate. Bell, who
has now won the event 3 times, took an early lead, but was soon joined
by the Sunderland veteran pair of Tom Doughty and Dave Robertson. Bell
made his bid for victory in the final 600m, coming home with 13secs to
spare over Doughty, who just held off Robertson for 2nd. Dawn Richardson
of Quakers won the Womens' race, with Tynedale veterans, Sonia Morley and
Karen Robertson taking the minor awards. A record number of 490 competitors
took part in the event, which is held in aid of the Friends of Gibside.

Saucony National Cross Country Relays.
Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. Sat. 6th Nov.
Morpeth Harriers took the National Cross Country Relay title, for the
5th time, at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield on Saturday, edging out defending
champions and race-favourites Belgrave. After early legs from Tom Ranger
(14th) and Neil Wilkinson (5th), Nick McCormick over from Ian Hudspith
in 4th place, to start the final stage. McCormick soon moved to the front
of the record field of 140 teams, but slipped to second in the muddy stretch
in the woods. He was still 30m behind the Belgrave runner with 1km remaining,
but his speed on the faster going prevailed, as he retook the lead in the
final 200m. McCormick's time was only bettered by Aldershot's Chris Thompson
and recent Falkirk winner, Mike Skinner of Blackheath.
For good measure the Morpeth B team also occupied a top twenty spot,
in 12th position. There was more success for the Northumberland club in
the Under 17 Mens' event, with their trio of Ross Floyd (7th) Andrew Colwell
(9th) and Jonathan Young taking the silver medals.
Running in incomplete teams, Ryan McLeod of Elswick and Ryan Stephenson
of North Shields Poly (9:00), led home the field on the first leg of the
Junior Mens' event. Delyth James of Morpeth also running as an individual
was 3rd on leg 1 of the Under 17 Womens' race (9:02).
