Middlesbrough Festival of Road Running.
Sun. 29th March.
New Marske's Ricky Stevenson
maintained his excellent form, to win yesterday's Elite mile at the
Middlesbrough Road Race Festival.
Conditions were sunny but cold, but
thankfully the wind which had been prevalent 24 hours earlier had
abated.
On the course which started at the
Riverside Stadium and finished at the Town Hall, Stevenson representing
the North Eastern Counties, kicked away from the opposition in the
final 200m, with Scotland's Bruce Raeside taking second place. Morpeth
Harriers John Taylor and Nick McCormick (running for the BMC) finished
4th and 5th.
Scotland's Susan Scott continued from
her successful Indoor season, to win the Womens' Mile holding off the late challenge of Kerry
Harty.
The early pace like the Mens' race had
been slow.
Gateshead's Stacey Smith, the British
Universities Indoor 800m champion, finished 5th for the North East,
with Laura Weightman of Morpeth, the 2008 English Schools 1500m
champion in 6th place.
The region took the bronze medals in
both team events.
The Tees Pride 5km attracted over 1000
runners.
Morpeth's Ian Hudspith held a slight
lead after halfway, but pulled out with a hamstring injury.
Loughborough student, Rob Whittle from
Basingstoke, proved the stongest at the finish, pulling away to a
12secs victory over Gateshead's Chris Parr. Steve Hepples of Loftus
took third place, while Thirsk's Gary Dunn was the leading veteran in
5th.
Middlesbrough's Carolyn Summersgill
easily won the Womens' race finishing in 18th place overall.
New Marske Junior Jess Russon took
second place ahead of Elswick veteran, Yam Thiru.

Additional Comments: Report edited. Results courtesy of
www.chipresults.co.uk. First 140 on day and rest Monday am. 857
finishers (last time = 58:16). Christine Lee was 1st W65 (27th) in
24:08. Dave Whitmore finished 249th (2nd M70 I think) in 24:29. I think
a lot of competitors did not declare age on entry form, as some
definite Veterans (including first two) were not indicated as such.
Apologies therefore if there are errors in some category winners. A
good event, which is worth repeating. I gather prize structure
(especially for Mile) needs to be re-assessed..
Start Fitness
North Eastern Harrier League.
Temple Park, South Shields. Sat.
28th March.
The Start Fitness North Eastern
Harrier League held it's final fixture of the season, at Temple Park on
Saturday with the Team and Individual titles, being eventually decided.
Conditions were cold and very windy,
but thankfully the morning's rain had cleared.
Wallsend Harriers (3rd on the
day) ended Sunderland's 10-year reign as Division 1 champions,
winning by 5pts from neighbours Heaton (2nd here), with Sunderland
having to settle for third place.
Victory on the day went to Elswick
Harriers, who were led home by emphatic race winner, Ieuan Ellis, the
former Welsh Marathon International. Claremont's Peter Newton clocked
the fastest time finishing 4th from the fast pack, ahead of James
Buis of Heaton, who claimed the Individual title.
British Masters champion, Stewart Bell
of Chester Le Street, absent here, had gained enough points previously
to fitingly win the Veterans' title.
Low Fell (2nd overall on the day) won
the Division 2 title, with host club Jarrow and Hebburn taking the
honours in Division 3.
There was an exciting finish to the
Senior Womens' competition. Tynedale held a 2pt lead over defending
champions, Heaton, but victory on the day for the Newcastle club, ahead
of Chester Le Street, who split the pair, saw them edge out their
rivals and retain the title, by the higher place ruling.
Gemma Floyd (formerly Taylor) of
Morpeth returned to competition to claim the individual victory.
Gateshead's Kim Simpson took second place from the fast pack,
successfully defending her Individual title.
Sunderland had some consolation taking
the titles, in the Junior Women, Under 17 Men and Under 13 Boys
age-groups.
Sarah Crosby won the Junior race from
the fast pack, while Jarrow's Catlin Lloyd won the Individual title.
Tynedale also did well with Steph
Bruce (victorious on the day) taking the Under 15 title and Samuel
Hearn the Under 17 Mens' award.
The Hexham club also won the Under 15
title and provided the Individual winner, Josh
Brown. Birtley won the Under 13 Girls' title and Sophie Forster
(a close second on the day), won the Individual award.
Gateshead took the honours in the
Under 15 girls'' section.
Chris Peverley of Chester Le Street
won the Under 13 Boys' individual title.
North Eastern champion, Michael Grimes of Durham, running from the slow
pack, won the Under 17 Mens' race by a massive margin of 2mins
36secs.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. 1000 apologies, but I
omitted to mention that this fixture marked the 100th anniversary of
the Men' League, hence a larger field than usual. Too many stats
to think of, throughout a busy weekend. Sun came out late in afternoon,
but very cold. Thanks to the Binghams for on-the-day results, and
their successful reign as League Sectretaries. Major problems
with funnels in SM race which meant only about 30 times were taken,
before going to random. Not sure what problem was but there were queues
of 50m, for a good 5 minute period. 359 finishers in SM race (last
time: 58:38). (356 P Kelly 55:53; 357 G Routledge 58:35). 106 in SW
(42:13). Congratultions to the Heaton Womens' team, who overcame the
odds, and James Buis and Lee Roe for their individual success. Heaton's
other SM counters were: 41 I Robinson 33:59; 43 L Roe; 59 O Jardine

North Eastern Counties A.A Road Relay
Championships.
Watergate Park, Lobley Hill.
Sat. 21st March.
Gateshead Harriers gained an
impressive victory at Saturday's North Eastern Counties' Road Relay
Championship at Watergate Park, Low Fell. It was their first victory in
this event for the Royal Signals Trophy, since 1984.
Conrad Franks handed over in 5th pace
on leg 1, to Andrew Teate who moved them through to 2nd position.
Chris Paton and Sean Hall maintained their placing, before Chris Parr
took the lead for the Tyneside club on leg 5.
Mark Elliott maintained the advantage
on the final leg, coming home 19secs clear of Morpeth.
Defending champions New Marske crossed
the line in 3rd place but were disqualified for fielding an
ineligible athlete. The Cleveland club led for the first three legs,
with Ricky Stevenson the British Universities Indoor 3000m champion,
breaking his own course record by 4secs on leg 1.
Morpeth through Matt Nicholson held a
temporary lead on leg 4.
North Shields Poly were promoted to
third place.
The rearranged date, together with the
inevitable fixture clash, meant that the overall number of completing
teams was well down on previous years.
Only 4 teams finished in the Veterans'
race, which was won by Sunderland, who defended their title. They also
broke their own course record by 1min 21secs. Sunderland led all the
way, with Elswick 2mins behind in 2nd place. Michael Thompson (leg 2)
and Tom Doughty (leg 4) shared the fastest time for the Wearsiders.
The closest contest came in the Senior
Womens' race over 4 legs.
North Shields Poly held a sizeable
lead on leg 1 after Karen Johns broke the course record by 2secs. Gina
Rutherford and Louise Hayes maintained the advantage with Chester Le
Street 50secs behind after leg 3. Maxine Czarnecka soon made up
the deficit on the final leg, pulling away to a 59secs victory.
Morpeth, through Jane Mooney snatched second place on the line from the
Poly.
It was Chester Le Street's 4th
successive victory in this event.

Additional Comments: Report "savagely edited" and in "Sports

exposed sections. Tom Danby ran second leg for New Marske (10:21) but
his first claim club is Pocklington. Heaton (like a few other
teams) did not field a full squad. Splits were :L Roe 10:26 (2), L
Smith 11:14 (5), M Likeman 11:42 (5), I Robinson 11:25 (5), P Inskip
12:35 (5). Lee Roe challenged Stevenson for 300m, and was 20m adrift at
600m, when they went out of sight. Have to say that event lost it's
prestige after being cancelled on original date.

performances, but both Northumberland and Durham were short of the
eight runners in a few races. Good run also from Tristan Peel. Further
info: Course very tough and hilly. Many athletes came home in
distressed state and First Aid were busy.. Michael Priestley was lying

unwell. More minor results: SB: 84 M Jones (Cl) 25:33; 106 M

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier
League.
Prudhoe High School. Sat. 14th
March.
Wallsend Harriers took a step closer
to winning the Senior Mens' Division 1 title, at Saturday's penultimate
Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture at Prudhoe High
School. The North Tyneside club now hold a 6pts lead over Heaton, the
pair occupying the first two places, on the day. Sunderland,
champions for the last 10 years, lie another 1pt adrift in third.
In the Individual race, Blyth's Gary
Jones held off the challenge of Ryton's Phil Addyman. Given the cold
and windy conditions and the nature of the course, it was not
surprising that the leading pair are experienced Fell runners.
Graeme Taylor of Jarrow and Hebburn,
finished 3rd from the medium pack, while Heaton's James Buis clocked the fastest time, finishing
in 4th place from the fast pack.
Low Fell's victory in Division 2,
means they now join Gateshead at the head of the table, while Jarrow
and Hebburn extended their lead at the top of Division 3.
Gateshead's Kim Simpson easily won the
Senior Womens' race from the fast pack.
2nd placed Samantha Scott led host
club Tynedale to the team title. They now hold a 2pts lead in the
table, over defending champions, Heaton, who were led home on this
occasion by 3rd placed Anna Turvey.
The timing of the event plus the
conditions, meant that six of the eight races were won by fast pack
runners. Liam Johnston of Jarrow and Hebburn (Under 17 Men), Josh Brown
of Tynedale (Under 15 Boys), Caitlin Lloyd of Jarrow & Hebburn
(Junior Women), Steph Bruce of Tynedale (Under 15 Girls) and Sophie
Forster of Birtley (Under 13 Girls) were also successful.
Arren Skipsey of Blaydon broke the
sequence with a slow pack victory in the Under 13 Boys' event.

of Durham. Weather was very windy making it quite cold at "altitude".
Firm under foot at start/finish area. Apparently Low Fell lead
Sunderland Strollers and Gateshead in Division
2, though my figures show that listed in report. Not sure of
runner-up in Junior Womens' race, either pack or age-group ? (she
actually ran from slow pack, now third fastest, she is U20)..
Other Heaton counters in SM race were: 29 L Roe; 34 L Smith 34:51;
57 I McKinnon 37:43; 59 S McEntee 37:46 SW: 16 S Lemon
27:17.
In Individual competitions, James Buis is 1pt ahead of Dave Kirkland
with Lee Roe in 3rd. Stewy Bell leads in Vets event, while Kim Simpson
is ahead of Tracy Laws with Jo Zoppi and Angela Hunter joint 3rd.
Late news: Jesmond Joggers finished 2nd in Division 3, 1pt ahead of

I felt Richard Buck lost any chance of a medal, because of a bad lane
draw both in Semi Final and Final. The TV experts do not seem to notice
that most athletes have no chance in the inside lanes, over 400m.
The Russian Womens' 4x400m team even struggled to win from the inside
lane. An excellent run from Vicky Barr took the British team into
a temporary lead on leg 3. Okoro's first lap in 800m
final was 56.10secs. No further comment.

Inter Counties
Cross Country
Championships.
Wollaton Park, Nottingham. Sat.
7th March.
Shildon's Kate Avery proved to be the
region's best performer at Saturday's McCain Inter Counties Cross
Country Championships at a windy Wollaton Park, Nottingham.
Avery took third place in the Under 20
Womens' race, which incorporated the Trial for the World Championships
in Jordan on 29th March.
Avery finished close behind the
Aldershot pair of Lily Partridge (Surrey) and Charlotte Purdue (Hants)
gaining automatic selection for the Jordan team.
Avery, still in the Under 17
age-group, led the North East team to the bronze medals, with good
support from Laura Weightman of Morpeth (15th), Jess Russon of New
Marske(16th) and Kirsty Legg of Middlesbrough(31st). Scotland West
took the title.
The North East also took the bronze
medals in the Senior Womens' race, led by Sale Harrier, Sonia Samuels
in 6th position.
The other scorers were Alyson Dixon of
Chester Le Street (30th), Carolyn Summersgill of Middlesbrough &
Cleveland (37th), Mary Ferrier of Gateshead (38th), Maxine
Czarnecka of Chester Le Street (40th) and Tracy Laws of Chester Le
Street (144th).
This event was won easily by European
Junior Champion, Steph Twell of Hampshire. Cumbria's Sarah Tunstall
finished 2nd, with Chester Le Street's Freya Murray, running for the
winning Scotland East team, in 5th.
Border
Harrier, Tom Farrell running for Cumbria finished 5th in the Under 20
Mens' trial, behind recent English National winner, Nick Goolab of
Middlesex.
Like Murray, Farrell's participation in Jordan, will be in the hands
of the selectors, who meet on Tuesday.
The North East finished 5th team
behind Yorkshire. Elswick's Philip Hurst (13th) and New Marske's
Russell Best (14th) led home the counters.
Hampshire's Andy Vernon won the Senior
Mens' event, outsprinting long-time leader and National champion,
Frank Tickner of Avon, in the final 100m.
Guernsey's Lee Merrion finished third
ahead of 1500m International, Tom Lancashire, who led Greater
Manchester to the team title.
Tipton's Ryan McLeod (22nd) led the
North East, the defending champions, into 4th place.
Carlisle's Amy Hetherington, the
National champion, finished 2nd in the Under 13 Girls' race, with
Cumbria team mate Hannah Bethwaite finishing 7th. The Birtley pair of
Sophie Forster and Lydia Turner finished in a respectable 20th and 22nd
place, respectively.
Cumbria finished an excellent 4th in
the Under 15 Boys' race. They were led home by Northern and National
champion, James Knox who finished 12th on this occasion.
Michael Priestley (North Shields Poly)
ran well to finish 14th in the Under 17 Mens' race.

Additional Comments: Report savagely edited and in "Sports Shorts" (a
lot of imput on one race only at European Indoor Champs, and no mention
of Vicky Barr's silver medal in the Relay !).. Watched Sky Sports
coverage where few North East athletes were spotted. It would appear
that the weather was good at start of meeting, but it got colder and
definitely windier. Results courtesy of Kevin Carr via e-mail (from
Cliff Robinson).(about 8.00pm). No mention on UK Athletics website
before that time.
Laura Park, with leaders early on, dropped out after losing contact
(since selected for Worls Cross team). Surprisingly no mention of her
in AW report.. It would seem all the region's U15 Girls had bad runs
(they are
definitely better than that showing). Further results included: SM: 123
