I had an enjoyable day watching. Trip courtesy of England Athletics "treat" for kids. These youngsters (medallists from NEXC Champs) were really well behaved. Weather wet at start, but luckliy cleared during opening ceremony and it became sunny and quite warm. Saw BBC coverage (not interactive). As usual Junior races were virtually ignored. Would prefer to see more highlights of these ( I realise "live" coverage was for Senior races), and surely we do not need to see a "Brendan" interview.

North Tyneside 10km
North Shields to Whitley Bay. Sun. 23rd March.
Morpeth Harrier Nick Swinburn won yesterday's  highly competitive fourth North Tyneside 10km Road Race.
In the event ran from North Shields Sports Centre to St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, Swinburn waited until the final 400m before sprinting away from clubmate Nathan Shrubb, with 2007 winner, James Buis of Heaton close behind in 3rd place.
The winner, a student at Bangor University, was also a member of the winning North East team at last weekend's Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
The extremely windy conditions, meant that no one was prepared, to make an early bid for victory, though Swinburn had tried three times to pull away from the leading group of five. but decided against it. Mike Grifiiths from Newcastle, Staffs (2nd in 2007) finished fourth and Stewy Bell of Chester Le Street was the leading veteran in 5th place.
Morpeth easily won the team event for the 3rd successive year.
Gateshead Harrier, Jessica Trowbridge, 2nd in the Elswick race, 2 days earlier, was a convincing winner of the Womens' race finishing in 21st position, in the record field of 1900 runners.
Marathon specialist Angela Hibbs of Chester Le Street took second place ahead of Loughborough student, Alex Snook of Shildon. Heather Robinson of Chester Le Street led the veterans home, in 11th place.

Only first 350 available on day, therefore some older Veterans' results and teams ( Heaton only Womens' team with four or more, on these sheets) not available yet. 1903 entries. Race progress courtesy of George Patterson, who was announcing in lead car. Very cold but bright, and wind seemed to be at it's strongest when race was in progress. Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races.
Newburn Riverside Park. Fri. 21st March.
Morpeth Harriers repeated their 2007 victory in the Senior Mens' Relay at yesterday's Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Race promotion.
Morpeth were lying in 4th place, 21secs behind leaders Claremont on leg 1, before Lewis Timmins moved them into a 41 secs lead over Gosforth, after the second leg. Timmins on a break from his American University, also clocked the day's fastest time.
Mark Hudspith, sidelined for several weeks, returned to action and extended the advantage on leg 3, before Ian Hudspith brought the Northumberland club home with nearly 2 mins to spare.
Chester Le Street held off a late challenge from Sunderland for second.
The cold windy conditions, intermingled with heavy showers. meant times were a lot slower than in previous years.
The exception was the Senior Womens' race where Alyson Dixon of Chester Le Street, gained a decisive victory over Gateshead's Jessica Trowbridge. Dixon bettered the old record figures set by Dianne Henaghan in 2003,  by 2secs. Mary Ferrier of Gateshead, who finished 3rd took 6 secs off the old Junior record set in 2006.
Elswick's Grace Taylor was the leading Under 17 athlete.
With eight runners in the first fifteen Chester Le Street easily won the team event.
Sunderland won the Veteran Mens' Relay for the 5th successive year. Tim Field clocked the fastest time on leg 1. Sunderland were only headed by Elswick on leg 3, but came home with 23secs to spare at the finish.
Philip Hurst gained a comfortable victory for host club Elswick in the Under 17 Mens' race.
Morpeth's Marcus Cram was untroubled in winning the Under 15 Boys' event.
Morpeth also gained victories in the Under 13 Boys' and Under 15 Girls' races, thanks to Adam Harrington and Rachel Denton.
Sophie Forster narrowly defeated Birtley clubmate Sophie Taylor in the Under 13 Girls' race.

Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
Wollaton Park, Nottingham.  Sat. 15th March.
The North East Counties' gained a welcome victory in the Senior Mens' race, the final event at Saturday's Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.
In the race which served as the World Championship Trial, Morpeth's Ian Hudspith moved through strongly to finish 9th behind runaway winner, the National champion, Tom Humphries of Staffordshire.
Hudspith was supported by Lewis Timmins (16th), Mark Hood (19th), David Wardle (23rd), Andy Caine (25th), and Nick Swinburn (48th), the team regaining the title they last won several years ago.
Gateshead Harrier Ross Murray was the top North East idividual performer. Murray, still in the Under 17 age-group took part in the Under 20 World Trial and finished in 5th place behind English Schools' champion, David Forrester of Merseyside. This performance almost certainly gained Murray a place in the Great Britain team for the  Championship event at Edinburgh in 2 weeks time. Murray had also represented Britain in the European Championships last December.
Cumbria's Laura Park, who won the English Schools' Intermediate title, 7 days earlier, rose from her sick bed to win the World Trial for Junior Women. Park,16, had to work hard catching long-time leader Emma Pallant of Hampshire, in the final 600m. Park was a non-counter for the Great Britain team, that won the European title.
Fergus Roberts from Richmond, representing Yorkshire, maintained his unbeaten record in the Under 13 age-group to easily win his event.
Durham City Harrier, Felicity Milton, representing Leicestershire, finished 6th in the Senior Womens' race, behind surprise winner, Laura Kenney of Warwickshire. Cumbrians Gemma Miles and Sarah Tunstall finished 5th and 8th respectively. Sonia Thomas of Sale led the North East challenge to finish 15th, the squad finishing in 4th place..
The County also finished 4th in the Under 15 Boys' race, led home by Michael Priestley in 15th position.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Results courtesy of UK results website, but not unfortunately until Sunday am, so I had to cut results due to time factor  (nb. First six in Trial events plus other event winners, were on site 5.00pm Saturday). Congratulations to SM team and to team manager, Steve O'Gara. Watched selected highlights of Sky TV coverage. Apart from spelling a few names wrong, they seemed to only show the  first six or so, through, and no team results were given. In SM race, I saw a few North East athletes during race. Hudspith was about 18th at halfway. Unfortunately the first North East athlete to be shown crossing the finish line was Andy Caine (David Waddle was just ahead queuing in funnel), as they broke off after first six. Hence I did not know we had won until full results were on website. Fergus Roberts looked very impressive, pulling away afer 1km. Additional info: NE Counties regained Overall Trophy. Sainsbury's English Schools Cross Country Championships.
Sefton Park, Liverpool.  Sat. 8th March.
North East athletes struggled at Saturday's Sainsbury's English Schools Cross Country Championships at Sefton Park, Liverpool. The event was held as part of the City's European Year of Culture celebrations.
Top performance came from Durham's Philip Hurst in the Senior Boys' race, the final event, which took place during torrential rain. The rain which always threatened had luckily not prevailed in any of the programme's previous races.
Hurst, a Gateshead College student and the current North Eastern Counties' Under 17 champion, was always running strongly finishing in 6th place behind 2007 European Junior 4th-placer, David Forrester of Greater Manchester.
Closest race of the day came in the Senior Womens' event, fought out between two members of the winning European Junior team. Joanne Harvey of Devon (8th on that occasion) held off the persistent challenge of bronze medallist Charlotte Purdue of Hampshire. Northumberland's Laura Weightman finished a creditable 22nd.
Not for the first time this season, it was athletes on the borders of the region who shone.
Cumbria's Laura Park, was untroubled in retaining her Intermediate Girls' title. Kate Avery of Durham finished in 15th place.
Dan Schofield of North Yorkshire finished a fine 5th in the Intermediate Boys' race, winning an England vest for the International match at Edinburgh in 3 weeks time.
His younger brother Josh finished 10th in the Junior Boys' race, just missing out on an automic England spot. National Under 13 champion Fergus Roberts finished 13th enabling North Yorkshire to take the silver medals behind rivals, West Yorkshire. Northumberland's Lewis Hogg came home in a creditable 29th position.
Rachel Denton of Northumberland finished a respectable 24th in the Junior Girls' race.
Cleveland's best performances came in the Senior events. Russell Best and Adam Morrell finished 23rd and 26th (Boys), while Kirsty Legg came home in 28th position (Girls).

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Prudhoe High School. Sat. 1st March.
The final fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League was held in extremely windy conditions at Prudhoe on Saturday, but there was some exciting battles for the League titles.
As expected Sunderland won the Senior Mens' Division 1 title for the 10th successive year, though they were beaten on the day by Gateshead. For the Wearsiders, Tom Doughty (not competing here) took the Overall Veterans' Individual award. Elswick took 2nd place ahead of Durham City.
Morpeth won a close contest for the Division 2 championship from Heaton, with Mark Brown, who clocked the fastest time in 8th place, taking the Senior Individual title.
Birtley won the Division 3 Trophy from Gateshead.
In the Senior Womens' race for the league title, Heaton narrowly defeated Sunderland to take the  Trophy, for the first time. The pair were level before this fixture, and with two runners in the first four Sunderland looked set for victory. However, with the Newcastle club closing in four athletes before the Wearsiders' third counter, victory was gained by 2pts.
In what was a good day for fast pack runners, Donna James took the individual honours, and also retained the Veterans' Overall Trophy.
Kim Simpson in 2nd place won the Senior competition.
Rachael Lundgren of Gosforth (Under 15) and Steph Bruce (Under 13) won their races from the fast pack and also won the Individual competition, Lundgren for the second consecutive year.
This feat was matched by Marc Newby in the Under 15 Boys' race.
Last year's Under 15 champion, Tristan Venus of Tynedale, took the Under 17 title this time. On the day Venus finished 2nd from the fast pack behind  Louis Batista of Gosforth.
Adam Harrington of Morpeth, absent on this occasion, won the Under 13 championship. Clubmate Jonny Nisbet was fastest on the day finishing 2nd to Tom Johnson of Sunderland.
Northern champion Mary Ferrier of Gateshead won the Junior Women's race from the fast pack and Deborah Oakley of Morpeth (3rd) gained the Individual title.
Other team honours went to Gateshead (Under 13 and Under 15 Girls), Morpeth (Under 13 Boys), Jarrow and Hebburn (Under 15 Boys), and Houghton took both Junior Women and Under 17 Mens' titles.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, but under heading relating to Liz Yelling. Sunny early on (clouds later) and dry. Got colder and wind got stronger, as meeting progressed. Course fairly dry. Thanks to Binghams for excellent results service throughout season. Also for very quick final standings results. 255 finishers SM (254 Denis Young 50:58; 255 Patrick Kelly 54:53). 58 finishers SW (last time 2@38:39). Only 2 runners in U15B slow pack, 17 finishers (U17M) and only listed 7 (all fast pack) in JW race. Apologies to Mark Smith (SM winner) who I overlooked in report. Not sure how races developed as courses were hidden. I understand Louise Noble went off course when holding a 50m lead, and got back in 5th position.  This would not have affected final result.  Some serious thought needs to be given to Senior Womens' Pack promotion and overall handicapping (especially SW) for next season. Too many fast pack runners seem to be getting through. Congratulaions to Heaton Womens' team and also Senior Men for promotion. George Patterson caused a slight scare when he thought only 5 Morpeth runners had started (including B Cordes). However, 7 finished (excluding BC). All Heaton performances on HH website.
