South Shields to Roker Beach. Sun.
17th May.
James Buis of Heaton defeated the
record field of 970 runners, to win yesterday's 11th Pier to Pier Run
from South Shields to Roker Breach.
Buis soon headed the field in the
event organised by Sunderland Strollers, with competitors facing a
strong head wind for most of the 7.5M distance.
The recently crowned North Eastern
Counties' 10000m champion, fought off the strong challenge of
Billingham's Gary Grounds pulling away to a 21secs victory of his
rival. Visiting athlete Matt John of Abbey, took third place just ahead
of 2008 winner and leading veteran, Rob Hand of Durham.
Sunderland's Michelle Holt repeated
her 2008 victory in the Womens' race finishing in 28th position
overall. Claire Simpson of Chester Le Street finished 2nd ahead of
former Sunderland Harrier, Louise Noble.

North Eastern Counties A.A. Track
and
Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.
Sat/Sun. 9th/10th May.
A strong swirling wind affected
performances at this weekend's North Eastern Counties Track and Field
Championships, with Saturday's programme the most affected.
Nevertheless five Championship records
were set. Conditions were ideal for yesterday's Under 20 1500m, when
British Universities Indoor 800m champion, Stacey Smith of Gateshead
overhauled Junior Cross Country International Kate Avery of Shildon on
the final lap, to take almost 9secs off the old figures. Avery was also
well inside the old record. Smith had also won the 800m on Saturday.
Middlesbrough's Helen Corrigan bettered her own record by 1.64m to
retain the Under 17 Womens' title.
The other records fell in the Under 13
Girls age-group. Stephanie Addison took the 200m on Saturday, bettering
the old figures by 0.6secs. Runner-up Alona-Mae Lonsdale of Shildon was
also inside the old mark. Lonsdale reversed places in
yesterday's 100m, the pair easily breaking the old record of
13.76secs. Also on Saturday, In the opening event Jenny Gilmour of
Gateshead set new figures in the 70m Hurdles, taking 0.67 secs off the
previous record.
In yesterday's session, Sunderland's
Jake Archer convincingly won the Under 17 800m after a fast opening lap
of 55.1secs. 2007 English Schools 1500m champion, Ross Murray of
Gateshead led all the way to win the Under 20 800m title. Gateshead's
Marc Elliott maintained his return to form, with victory in a
competitive Senior 800m. Multi Events specialist Anthony Burnell
of Gateshead won three titles yesterday in the Under 20 High
Jump, Long Jump and Pole Vault. Shildon's Cameron Boyek took the Under
17 1500m and 3000m titles.
Rachel Highfield of Middlesbrough was
a convincing winner of the Under 15 Girls 100m and 200m, with clubmate
Kate Welford equally as impressive in the Under 17 200m and
300m. Lydia Turner of Birtley, fourth in the recent London Mini
Marathon, dominated the Under 13 800m and 1500m. Former Chester Le
Street athlete, Rob Patton won the Under 20 100m and
200m. Durham's Vanessa Jacques gained three titles in the Under 15
Shot, Discus and Javelin.
On Saturday, Ricky Stevenson of New
Marske proved too quick for his rivals on the final lap to win the
Senior Mens' 1500m. Philip Hurst of Elswick was equally impressive
retaining the Under 20 1500m title.
Dominic Shaw of New Marske also
retained the Senior 5000m title. Scott Kippin gained Sedgefield's first
ever title, when winning the Under 15 400m. For good measure he
finished 2nd in the 200m behind Tynedale's Ian Shevlin. Carolyn
Summersgill of Middlesbrough & Cleveland overcame the difficult
conditions to easily win the Womens' 5000m. Craig Ferguson of
Hartlepool maintained his excellent form to gain his first title in the
Senior 100m..

Additional Comments: Only Senior Mens' results on Day 2 used +
the first eighth of report in "Sports Shorts". This is the third
successive week this has happened, and is simply not good enough.
Weather bright but very windy on Day 1. Nice on Sunday am, but wind
picked up (at times) later. Very strange result in U17Mens'
Javelin, when both competors threw exactly the same distance as 2008
winner. Some unnecessary heats in U13 and U17 Womens;' 800m on the
Saturday, but "put right" for Sunday. James Buis km times were:
3:08, 6:20, 9:35, 12:50, 16:06,
19:24, 22:42, 26:03, 29:24 (31:21 at bell). He dropped .Twaddle after 6
laps. This was Heaton's first gold medal since (I think) Phil
Handrihan's victory over Mike Threadgill in the U15 3000m in the
1980's.
Wallsend Harriers Gordon Smith
Memorial Road Relays.
Wed. 6th May.
A strong Morpeth H team led all the
way at the annual Gordon Smith Memorial Relays at
Wallsend, bettering the course record by 17secs. Brian Rushworth's
second leg for Sunderland moving them from 4th to 2nd, broke the
individual lap record by 4secs.
A record number of 58 teams completed
on a cool windy evening.

* Due to recording problems on Leg 1,
some Womens' splits were not available.
(Newcastle Journal; Mon. 11th May 2009).
Additional comments: This info sent but not used. Weather was bright
and dry but cold wind was getting stronger. Unfortunately the Judges
lost about 15 numbers on leg 1 for which the times taken, could not be
matched with a particular athlete. Hence I have cut down fastest times
for Women and used splits for only winning team. 56 teams
completed (last time 59:24) (last Male team 42:50).

British Universities Championships.
Bedford. Sat-Mon: 2nd-4th May.
Three of the region's athletes gained
medals at this weekend's British Universities Championships, at a windy
Bedford International Stadium.
Jon Taylor of Teesside took the 1500m
title, the Morpeth Harrier coming home 10m ahead of top Cross Country
specialist Andy Vernon of St Mary's.
Newcastle University's Katy Wilson
(Birtley) finished second in the Hammer, while last year's English
Schools champion, Lauren Dewdney of Gateshead, running in the
Loughborough colours finished third in the 100m Hurdles. It was her
quickest time, but the following wind was over the legal limit.

Northern Athletics League.
Sat. 2nd
May.
Wakefield easily won the opening
Northern League Division 2 fixture at Middlesbrough on Saturday. The
Gateshead B team finished second. Despite fielding some of their
British League athletes, the Tyneside club were weakened by a lack
of competitors in certain events. Andrew Sturrock in the 400m
Hurdles and Craig Strurrock in the Shot were impressive winners for
Gateshead..
Host club Middlesbrough finished
third. Asheigh Wood gained victory in the 100m Hurdles and Long Jump.
Morpeth Harriers comfortably won the
Division 3 fixture at York. Laura Weightman won the 400m and 800m along
with the B 200m. Elaine Telford gained a sprint double with Steve
Appleby winning the Shot, Discus and Hammer. Claire Reid won the
Womens' Shot and Discus.
In the Division 4 fixture at Jarrow,
only 4 points covered the first four teams. North Shirelds Poly held
off the challenge of the combined South Shields and Birtley team, with
the combined Wallsend and Blyth team, third.
Hartlepool's Chris Ferguson gained a
sprint double, with Carolyn Summersgill of Middlesbrough and Cleveland
winniing the Womens' 800m and 1500m. Tyne Breen returned from an
injury lay-off to win the Shot and Discus.
