Congratulations to Kenenisa Bekele for breaking the World 5000m record at Hengelo (31st May). His time of 12mins 37.35secs, bettered Haile Gebrsellasie's old figures by 2.01secs. His lap times were: 58.5, 2:01.8, 3:04.4, 4:04.9, 5:05.4, 6:06.2, 7:06.9, 8:06.7, 9:06.3, 10:07.4, 11:09.3, 12:09.7. No times were given for 1000m, 3000m or bell. Though well behind, Craig Mottrom set an Australian record of 13mins 10.47secs. In the 10000m, S Silshi (Ethiopia) clocked 26:39.69 to beat HG (26:41.58). Jo Pavey clocked 14:55.04, to finish second to Kenyan I Ockichi in the Womens' 5000m. Surprisingly meeting not shown on Eurosport, who seem to have cut their athletics coverage.
The small team of North East athletes came home with two medals, at the Inter Counties' Track and Field Championships at Bedford (30th/31st May). Claire Moore-Griss took second place in the Discus, with a throw of 47.60m, behind P Roles of W.Wales (56.54m).

At the Trafford Medal Meeting, John Baines won the U20 100m (11.4) and 200m (23.1). Tom Settle gained victory in the 800m (2:01.1).

Congratulations to Kieran Flannery, who won the 400m Hurdles, at the European Schools Games, in Milan (26th/27th May). I think his time of 53.58secs is a pb.
Steve Platts won the Rockingham Speedway 5 (26th May) in 25:03, with David Miles 3rd (25:28).
At the BMC 800m at Trafford (25th May), Andrew Teate won with a time of 1min 53.0secs. Paul Stockton was second in B event (1:58.2).

Weekly Round-up
(to 23rd May).
Craig Mottrom won the second Great Manchester Run (10km) on 23rd May, in a fast time of 27mins 54secs. Andy Graffin was leading Briton in 7th (29:06), with Martin Scaife an excellent 14th (6th Brit) in exactly 30mins ( I assume this is a pb). Andy Caine was 23rd (31:37). Sonia O'Sullivan in 27th place was the first lady (32:12). Liz Yelling (8th in 33:01) was first Briton from Louise Damen (10th in 33:37) and Tracey Morris (11th in 33:53).
At the opening UK Womens' League Division 1 fixture, at Wigan, Trafford were the winners. Nisha Desai was 3rd in B 800m (2:19.27) with Shirley Webb successful in the Hammer (63.64m).
Gateshead Harriers finished second to Liverpool H, in the second National Junior League match at Birmingham. Middlesbrough finished 7th. In the Womens' match, Gateshead finished 8th behind Birchfield. Leading North East performances were:

Middlesbrough were listed as winners of both Relays in Womens' match, but only competed in Mens' match.  Looks like Andrew Sturrock (pulled up lame in NECAA 200m) was a big miss for Gateshead. In the Tyne Division match at Pitreavie, Border won Mens' competition with Houghton and Peterlee 4th. The pair were 3rd and 4th behind the host club in Womens' match.
Selected winners from the Durham Youth Club Championships at Gateshead were: U20 Men: 400/800: A Piggford (Hart) 54.7/2:01.0  1500: L Moses (Darl) 4:15.7  U17M: 400: S Herrington (Hart) 56.2  800: A Spoor (Sun) 2:07.0  U17W: 200/300: L Cowell (Sun) 26.0/42.9

Missed start of meeting including all 100m and some 800m races. Difficult to get any other than "live" results on day, as well as all field events. Heard that Kate Wilson (Birt) won all throws in U17 age-group.
At the British Masters Road Relay Championships, at Sutton Coldfield (22nd May), Sunderland, without Brian Rushworth and Steve Coxon, were 8th in the M40 event. Apolgies if any errors re names/teams, as I could not read some of my scribble.
This meeting was used as a selection for the Regional Championships at York, in June. Though only 4th in competition, Lorna McMichael put up best performance with a 25.5secs 200m. She also won 800m (2:38.0).  Laura Hunter (12.4) reversed NE Counties' placings with Nina Garthwaite in 80m Hurdles.  Morpeth Harrier Callum Young (Duchess HS), was 1st in IB 1500m (4:39), but was 4th overall.

In fact Denis Field and Bob Laidler did not get round to throwing the Shot. Tim has torn a calf muscle after competing for H&P in a Northern League match. Learnt that Jon Evans is now M45 and D Maggs of Gateshead is M45 (did not know he was vet).
Bell time in BMC 800m was 66.6 (paced by Marc Elliott who also paced Angela.in 3000m). Splits in 3000m included 2:52.6 (1km) and 7:35.1 (bell). Steven Horn led  by a long way early on, and was only caught by Kay 300m from finish. Other Heaton performances included:

North Eastern Counties A.A Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sat/Sun. 15th/16th May.
Eight new records were set up at yesterday' second part of the North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead, adding to the six records established on Saturday.
Top performer was Yusuf Aliu of Middlesbrough, who set new records in both the 100m and 200m in the Under 15 age-group. The old figures had stood for 8 years, and in the 200m it was all the more creditable, as there was a stiff headwind in the home straight. Lianne Tucker of Blaydon easily bettered the old figures in the Under 20 Shot, adding to her victory in the Discus on Saturday. In fact, three records fell in the first half hour of the meeting. Kieran Flannery of Gateshead, second in the A.A.A  Under 17 event, in 2003, bettered the old figures in the first track event, the Under 20 400m Hurdles. He won the flat 400m on Saturday. The next event, the corresponding Under 17 Hurdles, saw a record broken by Middlesbrough's Scott Henderson, who later went on to win the 200m. 15mins later, Kate Avery of Shildon smashed the previous best in the Under 13 1500m. Emma Morris of South Shields, bettered her own figures in the Under 20 High Jump. Morris later won the 100m, adding to her victories in the 200m and 100m Hurdles on Saturday. Kate Wilson of Birtley broke the Under 15 Hammer record and also won the Shot. Tyne Breen of Blackhill, set new figures in the Under 13 Shot.
Jared Deacon of South Shields recovered from his surprise defeat in the 400m to win the Senior 200m. Middlebrough-based Hassan Ismael, easily won the 800m and Robert Cole of Middlesbrough, retained the 5000m title. Claire Brason of Sale, gained a double victory in the Senior 200m and 400m.
Gateshead's Titi Ameobi, sister of Newcastle striker, Shola, returned to competition after extended injury problems, to win the Senior 100m. Bath University student, Claire Robson of Teesdale, proved to have too much speed for Chester Le Street's Morag McDonnell to win the 1500m. Ryan McLeod of Elswick gained revenge on Ryan Stephenson of North Shields, who defeated him in the 1500m, to just miss the Junior 3000m record. Stacey Smith of Tynedale gained a double
victory in the Under 15 800m and 1500m, retaining both her titles. For good measure, her sister Shona won the Under 13 800m. John Taylor of Middlesbrough gained an impressive 800m/1500m double in the Under 17 age-group, and clubmate, James Minter took the Junior 800m title.
Top overall performer was 2002 English Schools Junior 400m champion, Lewis Robson of Gateshead, who won the 100m, 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump and Shot in the Under 17 age-group.
Saturday's highlight came in the Senior 400m, where Middlesbrough-based High Jump specialist Rabah Yusuf of Border, edged out European and Commonwealth Relay gold medallist, Deacon. Close behind in third place was recent British Universities' 200m champion, John Stewart of Loughborough.
Sally Scott of Gateshead, still an Under 15, bettered the old figures in the Under 17 Pole Vault, while Sunderland-based Mark Christie of Sale, returning to competition after injury, added 10cm on to the Senior Pole Vault record. Stacey Mohamed of Jarrow and Hebburn, added nearly 4m on to the Senior Womens' Javelin record. Johanna Jackson coming off an excellent Cross Country season, took over 2mins off the old figures in the Under 20 Womens' 5000m. In the Under 13 Long Jump, Chloe Gill of Gateshead, bettered the old figures by 18cms. She later won the 200m
Peter Vickers of Middlesbrough, took the Senior 100m crown. Steven Horn of Elswick retained his Senior 1500m title. Paul Reed of Morpeth was once again successful in the Senior Shot and Discus.
Karen Johns of Gateshead retained the Senior 800m title, while Michelle Holt of Sunderland won the 5000m.

Assitional Comments: Surprisingly most of info used. It was 8.45pm. before it was sent (AW took till 12.30, as it was difficult combining both day's results). Forgot to include some wind readings, but they were minus figures. Thanks to Margaret Watson for these. Only given in a handful of Jumps. Weather sunny and warm on both days, but though breezy, wind did not seem as strong as some readings suggest. Programme went through quite quickly with no real hold-ups. Felt overall start of second day (10.30 Field/ 11.00 Track), could have been brought forward 30mins. Finishing times were 4.45 and 5.05. Problems obtaining complete results on day 2. Apologies to Ivan Hollingsworth, for listing him as Wallsend, not Morpeth. Also to C Gaffney (Newton Aycliffe), who was listed wrongly in prigramme as New Marske.
Very disappointing turn-out in first event, the 10000m (2), though advanced entry was largest for some years. Claire Smallwood was due to run, but pulled up injured in training 2 days earlier. The combined Junior/Senior Womens' 5000m only had 3 runners. Natalie Dawson was 3rd. In the Steeplechase, she was the only runner, as other entry Rebecca Forster did not compete. She cleared obstacles well early on, but faltered slightly later. Her water jump needs to be improved. Her time was however, 10secs outside AW standard. Though she looked impressive in 1500m, Delyth James is not getting any quicker. She has no change of pace, as was proved in 800m. Sam Crowe's form is disappointing at present. She seems to always go off too fast. Nisha Desai performed well, and I think her 400m was a pb. Ketan (5th in 800m) seems to be getting back to form, being well inside 2mins in heat and final. Nice to see Claire Brason competing regularly again. Due to the registration time, being an hour before race, she warmed up too early, and withdrew from 400m Hurdles, with a slight niggle. Claire Taylor finished 4th in 1500m, struggling after the 800m point. R Wilmshurst is newcomer to me, but was certainly the best in her age-group. Not sure why Chris Lamb ran 800m ? He was caught for speed. The oddest decision was Calum Watson running the 800m, missing a certain medal in the 3000m. Though there was a good entry (best overall), felt standard in U15 + U17 Womens' races, was poor outside the top six.. Surprised at absence of Kirsty Thomas (I understand she is injured). Sadly only Jack Cowie gained an AW standard in any of the U13 Boys' events. A name for the future could be Ruth Sutcliffe of Heaton Manor School. She won her heat in U15 100m and was 4th in final. She also won Schools XC event at Stadium, in October. Apologies to Daniel Burns, for omitting his treble in the Senior High Jump, Long Jump and Javelin. Lorna McMichael also deserves a creditable mention. Where was Kirk Wilson ? Footnote: AW edited report and missed out mention of Robson, amongst other things. Since found out J Evans is now M45.

As a bonus this is Sunday Sun report (16th May). However it was severely edited..
Six new records were set up at yesterday's opening programme, of the North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead. However, the day's highlight came in the Senior 400m, where Middlesbrough-based High Jump specialist Rabah Yusuf of Border (46.97), edged out European and Commonwealth Relay gold medallist, Jared Deacon of South Shields (47.08). Close behind in third place was recent British Universities' 200m champion, John Stewart of Loughborough (47.50).
Of the record breakers, pride of place went to A.A.A Indoor 60m champion, Yusuf Aliu of Middlesbrough, who assisted with a legal wind reading of 0.8m per sec, took over a tenth of a second off the 8-year-old figures in the Under 15 Boys' 100m, with a time of 11.24secs. Sally Scott of Gateshead, still an Under 15, bettered the old figures in the Under 17 Pole Vault, with a leap of 2.40m. Sunderland-based Mark Christie of Sale, returning to competition after injury, added 10cm on to the Senior Pole Vault record, with a leap of 4.80m. Stacey Mohamed of Jarrow and Hebburn, added nearly 4m on to the Senior Womens' Javelin record, with a throw of 42.01m. Johanna Jackson coming off an excellent Cross Country season, took over 2mins off the old figures in the Under 20 Womens' 5000m (18:55.2). In the Under 13 Long Jump, Chloe Gill of Gateshead, bettered the old figures by 18cms. She later won the 200m (29.31).
Peter Vickers of Middlesbrough, took the Senior 100m crown (10.86). Steven Horn of Elswick retained his Senior 1500m title ((3:59.0). In the Junior event, Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly (3:59.06), comfortably defeated defending champion, Ryan McLeod of Elswick (4:00.33). Paul Reed of Morpeth was once again successful in the Senior Shot (15.17) and Discus (48.15). 2002 English Schools Junior 400m champion, Lewis Robson of Gateshead, showed his undoubted talent as a multi-eventer by winning the Under 17 100m (11.13), 100m Hurdles (13.91) and Shot (12.02).
Karen Johns of Gateshead retained the Senior Womens'  800m title (2:10.35), while Michelle Holt of Sunderland won the 5000m (18:41.7). Claire Brason of Sale was successful in the 200m (25.74). Former clubmate Jenny Graham of North Shields was slightly faster in the Under 17 age-group (25.70). Sam Hart of Gateshead was an impressive winner of the Junior Womens' 800m (2:16.51). Emma Morris of South Shields had a succesful day winning the Junior 100m Hurdles (14.8), 200m( 25.72), and taking second place in the Long Jump (5.28), to Durham's Rachel Abbs (5.38). Stacey Smith of Tynedale retained her Under 15 800m title, clocking an excellent time of 2:18.76. For good measure, her younger sister Shona took the Under 13 title (2:34.5).

Wallsend Harriers Gordon Smith Memorial Road Relays.
Hadrians Way Cycle Path.  Wed. 12th May
North Shields Poly won last night's Wallsend Harriers Gordon Smith Road Relay, for the fourth successive year. Held on a new course at the Hadrians Way Cycle Path, the Poly were never headed after Terry West's opening leg, which was the fastest of the evening. The host club took the ladies' title, with Lisa Walker, again the fastest on leg 1.
Result. 3 x 3.2km.
1 North Shields Poly 29:47 (T West 9:31, T Mellor 10:20, I Twaddle 9:56); 2 North Shields Poly B 31:07; 3 Wallsend 31:58; 4 Elswick 32:41; 5 Wallsend B 33:24; 6 North Shields Poly C 34:03
Fastest Times: T West 9:31; I Twaddle 9:56; R Walker (NSP B) 9:57; M Tomlinson (CleS) & P Newton (Clare) 10:08   Veteran: T Mellor 10:20
Women: 1 Wallsend 41:35 (L Walker 12:51, R Marshall 14:16, D Horne 14:28); 2 Alnwick 42:26; 3 Gateshead 42:37  Fastest: L Walker 12:51; D Eastham (Aln) 13:35; L Coates (Gate) 14:06  Veteran: B Pickersgill (Aln) 14:09
(Newcastle Journal:  Thurs  13th May 2004)

Additional Comments: Not used. Will resubmit results for Monday (17th). Weather bright and quite mild. Pleasant surroundings, but slightly off beaten track. 12 Mens' teams closed in, which was less than last year, though womens' field doubled (to 4 - Alnwick B were 4th). Clash with televised football match (Southampton 3 Newcastle 3) might have affected turn-out. 2nd team splits were: G Moore 10:22, R Walker 9:57 and M Fenwick 10:48. 3rd team splits: P Hilton 10:49, D Anderson 10:51 and S Kelly 10:38.
Tomlinson and Newton were 2nd and 3rd on leg 1. Jimmy Bell ran 2nd leg for Elswick. His time of 10:48 was joint 2nd fastest Vets along with Fenwick. Problem with times mainly due to 2nd leg Wallsend C runner, continuing after finish line and not getting accurate split. Also it looks like 2nd leg North Shields Poly C and D runners, had transposed their numbers. D Eastham ran leg 1, L Coates leg 2, and B Pickersgill leg 3. Sadly Heaton only provided two runners, who were not included in results. Scott McEntee (12:36) (14th) and Eric Appleby (14:06) (14th)..

Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 10th May.
Multi Events specialist, Vicky Haswell of Jarrow & Hebburn,  proved too good for the handicapper, to easily win the first race, in the Heaton Jesmond Dene series, last night. Backmarker Mark Brown of Morpeth, giving up to 11mins 40secs, to the record field of 120 runners, moved through to 24th place, with the fastest time of the evening. Hannah Wootton of Newcastle University, 3rd in the Morpeth to Newcastle race in January, was the fastest lady, finishing 38th overall.

Additional Comments: Only edited report used. Will resubmit results for next Monday (17th). Weather overcast and cool (it was beautiful day until 5.30). Slight delay to start (10mins), partly due to late arrival of Ted Joynson, and partly due to influx of late entries (83 advanced entries received). Needless to say Ted off -13mins, was 120th (actual time 47:51). Vicky Haswell (given a very generous mark of  2mins) clocked 24:00 (she was pleased to be faster than Mal Gibson). Good to see return of Melissa Forster. Hannah Wootton ran off a handicap of 9:20. In the Division 2 match at Cardiff, Border (327pts) won from Trafford (320). Leading performances: 100: P McKee (Bord) 10.73  200: 1 B Doyle (Harr) 3 J Deacon (Traff) 21.69; 4 P McKee 21.71  B: 1 T Ward (Bord) 22.22  800: 3 N Carlisle (Bord) 1:54.65  B: 1 R Girvan (Bord) 1:58.48  5000: 3 B Stephenson (B'hth) 14:59.21  110H: 3 S Nyananyo (Bord) 15.45  HJ: 2 Y Ali (Bord) 2.05m  LJ: 2 S Nyananyo 6.83m  HT: 2 D Little (Bord) 55.43m  4 x 400: 1 Trafford 3:14.91; 2 Border 3:20.96 (no team members listed).
At the Scottish University Championships, at Grangemouth, Julia Straker (Edinburgh) won the Long Jump (5.00m) and Triple Jump (11.47m).
Michael East won the feature Mile event, at the Balmoral Road Races (8th May). Kelly Holmes won the Womens' race (4:29). Craig Mottram was impressive winning the 5km (13:21), with Chris Davies 5th (13:50), while Berhane Adere took the Womens' 5km (15:04). Television coverage was quite extensive, showing Brendan Foster clocking 6:47 for the Mass Run.
At the 50th anniversary Mile meeting at Oxford (6th May), Craig Mottram won the feature event in 3:56.54, though he was the only runner inside 4mins. In the B race, Robert Cole was 4th (4:14.36) and Clayton Bannon 6th (4:17.13), behind L Merrian (4:08.21). Sonia O'Sullivan won the Womens' race (4:22.79) and Emily Pidgeon, the Under 20 event (4:50.68). Considering the advanced publicity this prestigeous event was given, the overall standard / turn-out was to say the least, disappointing. Steph Higham won the High Jump (1.60m).
In the Harrogate League 4.5M Road Race, at Skipton (4th May), Jon Orange (27:29) was second to Ian Fisher (26:17).
At the Trafford Medal Meeting (3rd May), Tim Ward won the 100m (11.0) and 200m (22.4).

Stephen Unwin Memorial 10km Road Race.
Dalston nr Carlisle. Sun. 9th May.
Michael Scott of Border, went one place better than in 2003, to win yesterday's 18th Stephen Unwin Memorial 10km Road Race, at Dalston. Scott dropped his main rival Andy Bowness of Cumbria Fell Runners, at the halfway point. Mark Brown of Clayton-le-Moors, moved through to second place, taking the leading veterans' prize. Sarah Tunstall, also of Border, 10th in the English Schools Cross Country Championships, easily won the Womens' race, finishing in 18th place overall.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 10th May 2004).

Additional Comments: All of info used. Weather bright and quite warm. Sadly only 42 finishers (24 advance + 22 late entries). There were  68 finishers in 2003 (150 - 200 in heyday), which is disappointing for organisers. Apologies but not sure of Bowness's first name. Also it was 4th placer, not Bowness, who was M40. Denis Lawther occupied 41st position in 53:10. The last time was around 55mins. Found out from Sarah Tunstall, that R Brown (Cumbria Schools) runs for Eden Road Runners. Mike Walker finished 16th, Denis Hayes 19th and Robert Moore 31st.

Additional comments: Only results sent, due to being "old news". Poor turn-out for sprints, but good for 800m. Probably because it was wet and windy for early part of meeting, (6.30 - 7.30 was only wet period of day), before it became dry, bright and almost windless. 4 heats of Senior Mens' 800m, but only one in 100m. Stuart Haley has grown beard, and is a little overweight. Only three runners in Senior Womens' 100m. Anthony Spoor was 4th in U7 800m (2:06.1). Best performances were by Teate or Stephenson (depending on whether winner is U20 or not ?) and Tucker. Some non-scoring performances, by younger athletes listed (they were not officially on programme), but they bettered AW standard.

British Universities Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Day 3. Mon. 3rd May.
Former Middlesbrough and Cleveland athlete and North East Counties' champion, John Stewart, was the region's only winner, at this year's British Universities Sports Championships, which ended yesterday at Gateshead International Stadium. The Sale Harrier, representing Loughborough took the 200m title, and later gained a second gold medal anchoring his team to victory in the 4 x 400m Relay, with a split of 48.8secs. Loughborough also won the Womens' 4 x 400m Relay, with Whitley Bay's Claire Brason clocking 56.5secs on the third leg. Chris Thompson of Loughborough, fastest over the long stage at the recent National Road Relay, stepped down in distance to win the 1500m. Andy Lemoncello of Stirling was an impressive winner of the 5000m, adding to his 10000m victory on Saturday. Commonwealth 4 x 400m Relay silver medallists, Melanie Purkiss (Chichester) and Helen Karagounis (Nottingham), occupied the first two places in the 200m.
The meeting was marred by the death of British Junior International Ed Prickett of Nottingham University, who was involved in a traffic accident outside the stadium on Sunday. Prickett was due to line up as one of the favourites in yesterday's 5000m final, after winning his heat on Saturday. This event was particularly tragic as it followed the death of his training partner, Sam Haughian in South Africa, 8 days earlier. As a mark of respect, a minute's silence was observed before yesterday's meeting.

(Newcastle Journal: Tues. 4th May 2004).

Additional Comments: Most of info used, which was surprising for non-weekend article. Weather bright, cooler and odd shower. Wind a lot stronger, particularly at time of 1500m races.
Ryan McLeod struggled in 10th place (4:07.1). Not sure why there was 45mins pause in middle of meeting. This meant all races were rushed, instead of spread out at leisurely intervals.
Andy Toward was 12th in 5000m (15:00.0) and Chris Lamb (has grown his hair long)16th (15:32.2). In the Womens' 5000m, Aiveen Fox was 12th (18:08.76), and Nicola Fifield 15th (18:30.55). Chris Weitz was outside first ten in Long Jump. He was better in qualifier with 6.17m. Karen Hind was sharing lead with Ruth Proctor early on, the pair opening up a sizeable lead. Wright closed on them after 4 laps, and took Karen with her for 2 laps. However, Karen dropped away quickly and was passed by Proctor and Jill Shannon (10000m third placer/4th overall), before finish. Nisha Desai was never in contention in 800m (Faye Fullerton was 2nd) and walked across line. Closest finish in whole meeting came in Mens' 800m, where I think the fast finishing Baddeley caught Ellis (who raised his hand in victory celebration), in the final strides. However, the judges thought differently to the timekeepers. Not surprisingly this was one of the races, where there was no photo to confirm. Reading results in AW, not sure whether it was myself or results people who were wrong on a few occasions?  However, thought Karagouris was 2nd in 200m (given 3rd in 24.2) and Sarah Maude was listed as 4th in 1500m (4:34.5) (thought she was last). Durham were 6th in Womens' 4 x 400m (4:11.0).

British Universities Sports Association Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sat/Sun. 1st/2nd May.
Richard Smith of Newcastle gained the only medal for the North East, after the opening 2 days of  the British Universities Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium. The former Middlesbrough and Cleveland athlete, who now competes for Newham and Essex Beagles, finished third in the 400m Hurdles. Claire Brason of Loughborough just missed out in the Womens' 400m Hurdles, fhe former North Shields Poly athlete, now with Sale, finished in 4th place. The best chance of victory would seem to be in today's 5000m, with Gateshead Harrier, Karen Hind, running for Leeds, easily winning her heat in 17mins 51secs.
Junior Cross Country International, Kate Reed won the Sheila Fairweather Inspiration 10,000m, which was incorporated in the Womens' championship on Saturday. In the bright but breezy conditions, the St Mary's student, making her track debut over the distance, took a massive 68ecs off the previous record. Chester Le Street's Morag McDonnell, running as a guest, tried to hold on to Reed in the opening laps, but gradually dropped back to cross the line 250m adrift in 2nd place, her time of 34mins 7.7secs, being a personal best by 30secs.
Performing creditably in 5th and 6th places, were Durham University's Olivia Walwyn and Michelle Hood. The only mens' record to be broken, was in the Triple Jump, with Steven Shalders (Univ of Wales), bettering the old figures by 37cm.
Bobby Aloysius (NEWI), 4th in the Commonwealth Games, representing India, broke Lee McConnell's 5-year-old Championship record by 4cms, in the High Jump. Zoe Brown (Loughborough) (Pole Vault) and Jo Ankier (Kings) (2000mSt), also set new figures in the Womens' events. Best placings by North East competitors were by Durham's Jon Best (4th in Triple Jump) and Newcastle's Kristine Ritchie (4th in Javelin).

Additional Comments: Most of info used (though nothing in Sunday Sun). Dry all time. Weather cool and breezy Saturday, warm and little wind, Sunday. Apologies to sponsors "Daily Telegraph", but for obvious reasons, could not mention in report. Major problems with photo finish. I understand the modern equipment, is not compatible with the old stadium system. A good meeting, but there did not seem to be any rush, to run the sprint heats (there were long gaps between races). Hence the programme fell well behind timetable (45mins late on Sunday). Some criticism of Zara Hyde Peters, occasionally pacing Reed (who was good enough to run at her own pace anyway). Michelle Holt was ahead of Walwyn at 3km, but dropped back with what appeared to be stitch. Nisha Desai and Claire Taylor qualified for 800m final. (Nisha 3rd in semi 1 in 2:14.59, and Claire 5th in semi 2 in 2:14.71). Great to see Claire competing again. Andy Teate was 4th in 800m semi in 1:52.3 (a pb I think) and Mark Elliott 7th in his semi in 1:58.35. Neither progressed to final. Claire Robson clocked 4:40.0 in her 1500m heat, in 4th place, but failed to progress. Ryan McLeod, was 4th in heat, and qualified for final (3:53.8). However he struggled on final lap. An opening lap of 59secs, would not have helped. Alex Haynes clocked 4:13.66, in his heat. Disappointing not to see Vicky Carmichael (entered in 3 sprints), in action. The big plus at this meeting, was that there were good entries, for what have now become much less popular events, at other championship level  ie. 5000m, 10000m and Steeplechase. Cloud fell over meeting at about 4.00pm Sunday, with tragic news (see above). According to number worn by runner, Rebecca Robinson was supposed to be last in 5000m heat (25mins +).

No womens' results. Were any competing ?
At Division 1 match, a good quality 800m race, saw Steve Horn finish only 6th in 1:57.6.  Carly Jones was 3rd in 100M B (13.3). Nice to see Titi competing again, if only in Relay. Another good run in 400m  by "find of the season" Nicola Youden. There were few competitors at Division 4 fixture, and major problems at Division 3 match, and some throws were cancelled. Hartlepool were weakened by clash with Division 2 football match. No points were listed for North Shields Poly, though they definitely competed.
