Additional Comments:  Unfortunately Field event cards were taken away to be updated, and entered on Gateshead H website, but results from previous meeting  were forwarded by accident. Secretary is on holiday at present. Have used only Field info I had. Track results courtesy of Ron Hartridge/Angus Lumb who were operating new photo finish system. It also registered wind speeds. Some good runs in Womens' 3000m. Km splits were 3:20 and 6:44. Unfortunately this was one event that photo finish did not operate. Avery was probably fractionally under 10mins.

Northern  Athletics  Championships.
Wavertree Stadium, Liverpool. Sat/Sun. 16th/17th June.
After an indifferent first day, North East athletes won eight titles at yesterday's second session of the Northern Athletics Championships at Wavertree Stadium, Liverpool.

Nisha Desai of Trafford gained a surprise victory over local rival Sara Todd (also second in 100m Hurdles) in the 400m Hurdles. In the corresponding Under 20 event, Sam Coleby of Durham, in her first season over this distance, strode to a comfortable victory. It was a good day for one-lap Hurdlers as Gateshead's Lewis Robson took the Mens' Under 20 title.

Inter County Schools Match.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 16th June.
Durham regained the overall Trophy, they surrendered to Northumberland in 2006 at Saturday's Inter County Schools Match at Gateshead International Stadium..
Despite the cold and breezy but thankfully dry conditions, there were some excellent performances. North of England record holder, Niall Flannery of Northumberland won the Intermediate 400m Hurdles and later gained victory in the 100m Hurdles. Rebecca Liddell of Northumberland gained an easy victory in the Junior Girls 75m Hurdles, while Katy Jenkinson of Cumbria proved too strong for Laura Welsh of Durham in the Intermediate 80m Hurdles.
Matthew Davison, who broke a 33-year-old record, a week earlier in the Durham Championships, easily won the Intermediate 100m. English Schools Cross Country Intermediate champion, Ross Murray of Northumberland clocked the fastest time in the 800m.
Northern silver medallist Chloe Gill of Durham reversed places with Northern champion, Emma Pringle of Northumberland to win the Intermediate Triple Jump. Pringle also won the Shot. Nicola Pearson of Durham was given her hardest race of the season, when just holding off the fast finishing Katy Hunton of Cumbria in the Intermediate Girls' 300m.
Tim Parkin of Northumberland cleared 4.00m for the first time to win the Intermediate Pole Vault.
In the non-scoring Senior events, Sam Coe of Cumbria easily won the Hammer and Stacey Smith of Northumberland moved a step nearer to full fitness, with victory in the 1500m

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. A good meeting as usual but there seemed to be a shortage of field officials. Slightly overcast but stayed dry (had been very wet since Tues). Wind got stronger during meeting. Results courtesy  of Ian Severs and RGS (?) staff. Another good run from Stacey S (as expected she proved too fast on last lap for IG winner, Kate Avery). Shona dropped out of 3000m when lying 4th. Tom Farrell ran mixed IB B/SB 800m finishing 6th (2:05.6). Mark Shaw clocked 4mins 28.7secs running as guest (5th) in JB 1500m.

Additional Comments:  Just results sent due to time lapse. Weather getting overcast after sunny day. Ideal conditions for 800m. Ron Stewart and Reg (with 20m remaining) passed Eric (his first race for a while) on last lap of 3000m. Eric walked last 10m. BMC splits were 55secs (r1) and 64secs (slightly fast) (r2). Hammer cancelled due to flooding near cage. Meeting therefore finished quite early. Denis Field I saw throwing Javelin, but not in results.

Additional Comments: Info from Jeff Sturrock. Surrisingly used as it was sent about 8.45pm. I knew nothing of this until he rang up. A wasted journey (3.5hrs ew), as only
three clubs (3 to qualify) had full teams (this was a stipulation but Border only had two athletes).

Nike Blaydon Race.
Sat. 9th June
27th NIKE BLAYDON RACE 5.7
Tewodros Shiferaw strode to a comfortable victory over fellow Ethopian and Birchfield Harrier, Gemechu Kidane. In the bright but humid conditions, Tomas Abyu and then Ian Hudspith led the 3600-strong field, with Shiferaw and Kidane breaking away after 5km. Shiferaw edged away in the final mile crossing the finishing at Blaydon Precinct Car Park, 75m clear of his rival. Hudspith who dropped to fifth at one stage, recovered to finish third, and also claim the £500 prize for the first athlete home from a North East club.
Another former winner of the race (in 1985, 1994 and 1995), Brian Rushworth retained the veterans' title finishing in 11th position.
Another Midlands-based athlete, Cathy Mutwa from Kenya, repeated her 2005 victory in the Womens' race. Her winning margin was 56secs over Tanzanian Bunuelia Katesigwa, who outsprinted Alyson Dixon (who like Hudspith won the £500 award) for second place.
With Veterans' prizes awarded to those Over 40, Fiona Lothian (race winner in 1994) took the first place award.

Additional Comments: This is AW info as Journal staff covered race. 3338 finishers (last time: 86:11). Only first 250 available on night. Individual results on JL website, Sunday (11.00pm). No team results until Tuesday (10.00pm). These were: SM: 1 Morpeth 38; 2 North Shields Poly 164; 3 Elswick 215  Veterans: 1 Sunderland 96  Women: 1 Chester Le Street 34; 2 Morpeth 73; 3 Sunderland 139. Jenny Brignall was 2nd Junior lady (44:41) behind L Dunn (41:41). Other results (including HH) on Joe Lee website. Matt and Bev Whitfield won "Me and Wor Lass" trophy. Apparently Ted Joynson  (he crossed finish line 3252nd in 69:38), had started off 20mins early. He was in fact, slowest "runner". Story of race from Chris White's commentary, so apologies if incorrect. Forgot to include times for positions 21-25 in Womens' race for AW, so have added. Error due tio these not being listed on original results sheet, and me overlooking when receiving extra results.

County Schools Championships.
Sat. 9th June.
Northumberland  at Gateshead International Stadium.
There were two new records and many encouraging performances, at Saturday's Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium.
Laura Weightman from Duchess School, Alnwick smashed the 13-year-old record by nearly 8secs to take the Intermediate Girls 1500m title. The time was also a personal best, for the recent Northern champion.  Rebecca Liddell (Royal GS, Newcastle) bettered the old figures in the Junior 75m Hurdles by 0.38secs. Lauren Dewdney (Central High) who held the previous record, this time impressively won the Senior 100m Hurdles. Northern Championship record holder, Niall Flannery (Royal GS) won his speciality 400m Hurdles in the Intermediate age-group, missing his brother Kieran's record by 0.38secs. He later won the 100m Hurdles. Gina Rutherford (Whitley Bay HS)  matched the old figures in the Senior Girls' 400m, 30mins after winning the 800m.
Last year's English Schools Inter 800m runner-up Stacey Smith (Prudhoe HS), returned to competition, to easily win the Senior 1500m.
Rebecca Ferguson (North Tyneside) clocked a personal best time to win the Junior Girls' 800m and a decisive kick at the bell, saw Zoe Armstrong (East Northumberland) take the Intermediate 800m title.
Best performers on the Field were Emma Pringle (East Northumberland), who won the Intermediate Triple Jump and Shot, and Jordan Bowser (Newcastle), who took the Junior Discus and Hammer titles. Pringle is the current Northern champion, in the Triple Jump. Grace Johnson (North Tyneside) cleared a personal best height to win the Intermediate High Jump. Last year's English Schools' Junior silver medallist, Tim Parkin (Tynedale) this time took the Intermediate Pole Vault title.

Durham  at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.
There were more outstanding performances and four new records, at the Durham Schools Championships, at Jarrow.
Matthew Davison (Gateshead), a close second in the recent Northern Championship, bettered a 33-year-old record to win the Intermediate 100m, eclipsing the old mark by 0.2secs.
Kate Avery (SW Durham) took almost 3secs off a 17-year-old record when winning a virtually solo Internediate 1500m.
Northern champion, Nicola Pearson (Easington) won the Intermediate 300m clipping the old mark by a tenth-of-a-second.
Chole Gill (Derwentside) added 82cms to the old record in the Intermediate Triple Jump.
Josh Phillips (Darlington) narrowly missed the Junior 800m record and in a close Senior Girls' 400m Hurdles, Lorna McMichael (West Wearside) narrowly defeated Sam Coleby (Durham Central) and Vicky Holmes (West Wearside).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Query regarding Pearson's record ? According to results she clocked 40.7secs in 2006. However, this "record" was overlooked in 2006 reports. All Durham results/info from BK.. Dave Bunce was previous IB 100m record-holder and Joanne Keenan the old IG 1500m holder. Weather at Jarrow was similar to Gateshead. (warm but breezy). Liddell was a-hundredth of a second outside pb. Rutherford's hand-time was 57.3secs, which is why she equalled Nisha Desai's figures. Kate Grimshaw was old IG 1500m record holder. Lee Richardson (EN) led all way in IB 1500m (4:23.1) but was challenged by Urwin on inside with 30m remaining and knocked him on to infield. Richardson was consequently disqualified. Not sure, but is Philip Brown (SP at Durham) not a SB ?

UK Womens' League.
Gateshead International Stadium..
Gateshead Harriers finished a creditable third in their opening UK Womens' League match at the International Stadium, yesterday. Despite the headwind which prevailed during the meeeting, Gateshead's best performances came in the Hurdles.
Lauren Dewdney, a pupil at Newcastle Central High School easily won the A 100m Hurdles, while Sara Todd, eligible for Gateshead through the higher competition ruling, won the B event. Todd had earlier finished 2nd in the 400m Hurdles, with Lorna McMichael occupying the same position in the B event. Team captain, Lisa-Marie Shippen took second place in the Hammer, while Melissa Carr, 3rd in last weekend's Inter County Championships, was edged out by a single centimetre, in the Long Jump. However, an injury sustained during that event, meant he had to by-pass the competition in her speciality Triple Jump. Gateshead's Relay teams also finished in 2nd place, with Todd running the first leg for both squads.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. Weather at Gateshead was sunny and warm, but stongish breeze by trackside. Jarrow info from GP, by phone. Probably with Morpeth individual performancss, rather than match result. Gateshead Relay teams were 4x100: Todd, Arthur, Burns and Ameobi. A brilliant takeover between Todd and Arthur. 4x400 splits were: Todd 60.2, S Youden 60.7, Goodall 59.4, Carmichael 58.5. Emma Ward  (CoStoke) won 1500 (4:30.8) and ran last leg on winning 4x400 team (3:57.6). Zara Hyde Peters (Cov G) won 3000m (10:23.7) and was 2nd in 1500 (4:46.3).

League Round-up.
Sat. 2nd June.
Gateshead Harriers made the long trip to Swansea on Saturday worthwhile, when winning their second British League Division 2 match.
Gateshead now lead the overall table by one point from Match 1 winners, Liverpool Harriers.
Reigning English Schools Intermediate 100m champion, Richard Kilty won both sprints. Chris Parr gained victory in the 1500m and Andrew Sturrock won the 110m Hurdles. Field Event victories came from Chris Boundy (Pole Vault) and Craig Sturrock.
Though not winning an individual A-string event, Lewis Robson gained valuable place points in four events. His time for second place in the 400m Hurdles was just outside the European Junior qualifying standard.
At the Northern League Division 2 match at York, Middlesbrough Mandale emerged as comfortable winners.
Top performer was Newcastle-based Border Harrier, Sara  Todd who won the 100m, 200m and Long Jump and helped the sprint Relay team to victory.
In an exciting battle at Whitley Bay, North Shields Poly's strength in the Relays told as they overhauled both early leaders Houghton & Peterlee and then Heaton Harriers to gain a 7 point victory. Both Graham Level in the throws and Gina Rutherford (200m, 400m and Relays) gained valuable points for the Poly.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. British League details from BAL website. Apologies from team management but they did not return home, until 2.00am Sunday. Additional info from Jeff Sturrock. The squad was only 15, an ideal number was 26. Some disappointment at last-minute withdrawals. York info from Graham Hall. This was very belated (am Sun), due to computer breakdown at meeting. I understand from GP, that Melissa Anderson (good to see her back) won 400m not Rachel Archer (this corrected later). Good quality Womens' sprinting at this match. Weather at Whitley Bay was cooler than inland, with quite a strong headwind. Sunny and thankfully dry.
Sadly, apart from Hopkinsons, Birtley's other points came from officials. They also provided results team.
