England
Athletics U23/20 Championships.
Bedford.
Sat/Sun. 27th/28th June
Gateshead's
Niall Flannery led some good performances from North East
athletes.to take the Under 20 400m Hurdles title at this weekend's
English Junior Championships at Bedford.
Flannery
clocked a personal best time of 51.07secs and for good measure clipped
four-hundredths of a second off the Championship record.
Stacey
Smith of Gateshead, who like Flannery already held a qualifying
standard for the European Junior Championships next month, won a hotly
contested Under 20 1500m.
In the
same age-group Lauren Dewdney (Gateshead) won the 100m Hurdles and
Sally Scott (Gateshead) took the Pole Vault title.
Scott
added 10cms to the Championship record held by current UK record-holder
Kate Dennison.
Morpeth
Harriers dominated the 5000m with Jon Taylor leading home Lewis Timmins.
Gateshead's
Emma Pringle, the 2008 Under 17 champion, finished 3rd in the Under 20
Triple Jump.

Blaydon Race
(5.9M)
Tues. 9th June.
Enclosed AW report (not used) as I did not cover it for Journal.
Full results on Joe Lee website.
Ian Hudspith became the first North
East winner of this Mizuno-sponsored event since his brother Mark in
1997.
Justina Heslop returned to her native Newcastle to gain an
emphatic victory in the Womens' race.
In the ideal conditions (bright but cool) a group of 7 athletes
had broken clear of the 4000-strong field after 3M, before Hudspith and
Raymond Tonui started to pull away. The pair were locked together until
the 8.5km point, when Hudspith made his bid for victory. Hudspith, 3rd
in 2007 & 2008, crossed the finish line at Blaydon Precinct
12secs ahead of his rival. The winner a 38-year-old Maths teacher was
having his first race since March after sustaining a hamstring injury.
He said after his victory which earned him £1000 "That is a
bit special, because it was obviously my brother before me.
The runners coming over from Africa make it a very competitive race.
Raymond (Tonui) wanted it as much as me, I was determined to do it".
Jean Ndayisenga took third place ahead
of Mongolian Serod Batochia. Brian Rushworth who crossed the line in
14th position, was the leading "official" (M40+) veteran for the
4th successive year.
Morpeth easily retained the team
trophy.
Heslop (30), who finished in a
creditable 25th position, and a former Elswick Harrier, pulled
away from Sarah Tunstall
after the halfway point to win the
Womens' race. Her margin of victory was a rather surprising 33secs.
Kenyan Joyce Kandie finished 3rd. Chester Le Street led home by 5th
placed Emma Raven (formerly Waterhouse) retained the team title.
Leading veteran Morag McDonnell was their third counter.
Neil and Sarah Wilkinson won the "Me and Wor Lass" Trophy.

lovely evening. Good conditions and an excellent turn-out. However an
extra Track event for Veterans, meant meeting finished a lot later than
normal. North Shields Poly had a good evening. They introduced a "new"
name in M70 age-group P Donaghy, who also defeated Reg Checkley in 100m
and 200m. John Moore covered ground in 100m (24secs) and 200m (51secs).
