rain for about an hour, fared up and sunny and warm later. Results

Not a great turn-out from North East competitors. I am really
disappointed in the overall strength of Team Tyne &
Wear. Tees Valley also weaker than normal. Better run from Gina R
in 400m and a pb for Kirsty L. Alistair Douglas (4th in 800m in 2:07.0)
and Jordan Scott (1st in B 3000m in 9:35.9) both ran for Northern R.

Beamish
Tram Challenge 10km.
Beamish Village. Sun. 29th June.
Morpeth Harrier, Nick Swinburn gained
his third successive victory in yesterday's fourth Beat the Tram
Challenge 10km, held in the grounds of Beamish Museum. The Bangor
University student, who earlier in the week ended Brian Rushworth's
unbeaten run of fifteen win in the Penshaw Hill Race, held a
24secs lead over Simon O'Donnell of Chester Le Street, as the first six
athletes headed the tram on the first 2km loop, which covered
the tram's circuit.
Swinburn extended his advantage to
over 3mins at the finish line. Gary Hetherington of Sedgefield led the
veterans home in third place.
Tracy Laws of Chester Le Street was another easy winner finishing
in 12th place overall, defeating the Womens' runner-up Samantha Birch
by 2mins 43secs.

but probably better than 2007, especially in Womens' race. About 182
finishers (last time: 79mins approx), ( I only have first 150, courtesy

The driving rain affected performances
at the annual Inter Counties Schools Meeting at Clairville

Early in the programme, top distance runner

Cleveland Hammer throwers Kayleigh Sullivan and Kayleigh Mills won
the Senior and Intermediate events, with long distances.
Northern champion Chelsie Browbank (Cumbria) duly won the Junior
Girls 200m.

including IG HJ (unsure of winning heiight), Boys Relays (I think
Durham and Northumberland may have been disqualified as last leg
runners "swapped " lanes, and some Senior events including SG 200
(Nicola Pearson's 200m estimated), SB 400H (won by , I think, Nick
Phelps in 57.6) and 2000St (Elliott Jackson in 6:49 approx). Runners
ran a lap short in IB 1500St, but they were nowhere near breaking
5mins.
A pb by Kirsty Legg in SG 800m. Laura Park went through 1km in 3:14 and

3M Aycliffe 10km Road Race.
Newton Aycliffe. Sun. 15th June.
Martin Scaife of North Yorks Moors was
a convincing winner of yesterday's 11th 3M Aycliffe 10km at Newton
Aycliffe.
In the ideal conditions,
Scaife together with Terry Wall of
Morpeth soon headed the 260-strong field, but Scaife seemed to develop
stitch and almost pulled out at the 6km point.
However, Scaife who last won this race
in 2001, when setting a course record, soon recovered and pulled
away to a 44secs victory over his rival, who was going for a sixth
consecutive victory in the event.
Carl Ryde of Doncaster took third
place, while John Hunter of Loftus was the leading veteran in
6th. .
Carolyn Summersgill (third in 2007)
comfortably won the Womens' race finishing 20th overall.
2007 winner Louise Noble took second
place, with Jacqueline Howard of Rossendale, leading the veterans in
third.

Mizuno Blaydon
Race.
Mon. 9th June.
Ethiopians gained a double victory in the 28th
running of this ever-popular event. Ayele Mergessa (22) was the overall
winner in the 4000-strong field, with 19-year-old Roman Gessese taking
the Womens' prize.
In the bright but breezy conditions, Mergessa dropped his main
rival Jean Ndayesenga, on one of the most exposed sections of the
course, Scotswood Bridge (4.5M).
Mergessa came home with 16secs to spare, over Ndayesenga, who had
won the 5000m for his club Birchfield in the British League match, a
day earlier.
The winner declared "I am very, very happy, it is a good strong
field and to win it is a privelege and honour".
Ian Hudspith with a strong finish, repeated his third placing from
2007 again claiming the special prize for the leading North
East athlete.
Hudspith stated "It's always difficult against the African guys,
but it's a challenge. The race has got a unique place in the North East
calendar and the longer it continues the better".
In the Womens' race,
Gessese proved too strong in the closing stages for 3-times-winner
Birhan Dagne, finishing in 23rd position overall.
In third place was 16-year-old Laura Park, holder of numerous
titles as one of Britain's top Junior Cross Country specialists.
Alyson Dixon picked up the North East prize in
5th position.
Brian Rushworth was the leading veteran for the third successive
year, with Heather Robinson taking the corresponding Womens' prize.
Additional Comments: This is AW report as Journal staff covered race.
Unfortunately due to current imputting of AW results, I am unable to
copy file. Full results on Joe Lee website. 3435 finishers (last time:
= 94:33).

British Athletics League.
Division 1 at Gateshead International
Stadium. Sat. 7th June.
Gateshead Harriers gained a surprise
victory at the first British League Division 1 fixture at the
International Stadium on Saturday.
In the bright but breezy conditions, the Tynesiders, newly promoted from Division 2,
came with a late surge of excellent results, to overhaul long-time
leaders Trafford.
When it looked like Gateshead were
heading for no individual victories, Ross Murray, the 2007 English
Schools' Intermediate champion, came with a late burst to pass Kent's
Ben Wiffen to gain victory in the 1500m.
In the process Murray
improved his previous best time by over half-a-second.
Minutes later Richard Kilty last
year's English Schools Senior 100m champion, won the 200m. In doing so
Kilty reversed places with 100m winner, Jeffrey Lawal-Baloc of Kent.
Kilty also set a personal best time, with a legal wind reading.
Kilty finished a close second in the 100m clocking another personal
best in legal conditions, though this performance was hand-timed.
The next Track event, the final
individual race, saw Ryan McLeod lead all the way to easily win the
5000m. McLeod was having his first Track race of the season, having
been sidelined with injury since March.
Meanwhile in the final Field
event, Craig Sturrock maintained his
excellent League record, with victory in the Shot.
Chris Sampson (3000m Steeplechase),
John Stacey (Long Jump), Ade Babatunde (Triple Jump) and Ian Burns
(Javelin) all gained respectable second places in their events.
Carlisle-based Border Harriers
finished in 4th place, though they gained no individual victories.

Additional Commets: Most of info used. Weather fine and bright. Warm in
arena but cold on Timekeeper's stand. Photo finish only used last hour
of meeting, as it needed to be reset (by a drafted-in Ronnie Hartridge)
after Angus Lumb went home ill. It was desperately needed for 100m,
when I clocked winner in 10.56secs. I have to admit that at halfway
through the programme, the final result looked very unlikely.
Richard Buck, competing for Sheffield (though not in 400m) clocked
46.5secs on last leg of 4x400m Relay (they finished 2nd).

Kaufman) produced very quickly.Very wet most of time, though rain had
stopped about last half hour. Jack Cowie clocked 51.2secs on last leg
of U17 4x400 Relay, but could not catch an impressive Jarrow
squad. No Relay results (apart from U13 age-group on sheets,
those noted are listed). A lot of times taken on photo-finish
(12.77secs A Wilkinson among others) but could not be included on
results programme.

Low Fell
Running Club Watergate
Trail Race.
Watergate Park, Gateshead.
Sun. 1st June.
Result. Distance 10km.
Morpeth Harrier Nick Swinburn was an emphatic winner of the first
Watergate Trail Race at Watergate park, yesterday.
The persistent heavy rain made parts of the
course very demanding, which suited the Bangor University student, who
is also one of the country's top Fell runners.
Swinburn came home over a minute clear
of clubmate., Michael Morris who pulled away from Heaton's James Buis
in the closing stages. Buis had the consolation of leading his club to
the team title.
Elswick's Stephen Grey was the leading
veteran in 5th place.
Morpeth's Jane Mooney easily won the
Womens' race, finishing 11th in the field of over 100 runners.
Angela Hunter of Chester Le Street
finished a distant second ahead of Heaton's Claire Buis.
