(Will send in results for Mon.4th). Overcast evening with drizzle. Not
sure of previous best turn-out. Sorry to say I would probably be only familiar
with quarter of field. Jill Scott led (gaining prime prize) until early
part of final lap. Rushworth was prime winner but just in front of group
of six. He pulled Martin away, dropping him at halfway. Other times included:

English Schools North East Region Combined
Events Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat/Sun. 25th/26th June.
Durham took the honours at this weekend's North East Region Schools
Combined Events Championships at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium. In what were
on the whole, ideal conditions with glorious sunshine, many of the region's
competitors set personal best performances. Durham gained three team victories
and provided three individual winners in the six competitions. Nick Ridgeon,
the current North of England Indoor and Outdoor champion, took the Intermediate
Octathlon title, setting a personal best performance in 7 of the 8 events.
He trailed West Yorkshire's Umar Hameed for most of the competition, but
pulled well clear of his rival in the final two events, the Shot and 1500m.
Danny Brown also gained victory in the Junior Boys' Pentathlon, leading
throughout the competition, after opening with victory in his speciality
event, the 80m Hurdles. Amy Fleming took the Junior Girls' Pentathlon title,
building up an early lead.
The best team performance came from the Intermediate Girls though Hannah
Francis Smithson of West Yorkshire, was a convincing individual winner.
In second place, Samantha Coleby one of the youngest competitors, moved
to third on the UK all-time list for 14-year-olds. She set personal bests
in every event apart from the Long Jump. The Durham squad contained the
same athletes, who took medals in the National Junior event two years ago.
The National Championships are due to be held at Southampton in September,
with the fiirst three individuals and winning team progressing from the
Regional round.
Albert Kamara of Northumbrland, third in the Intermediate event, joined
the Durham competitors on the trip to the South coast.
Results.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 27th June 2005).
Additional Comments: First hour of Day 1 was overcast with cool
breeze, but warm with glorious sunshine, for rest of weekend. Breezy pm
Sunday though. Sprint Hurdles on Day 1 likely wind assisted. I think Ridgeon's
only none-pb was in 1500m, which he won easily. Sam C was on course for
record after Day 1, but lost it in Long Jump, where her best jump was 15cm
behind board. Apologies to Rebecca Pottinger (1.57m in HJ), who was originally
placed 7th in IG event, but was given a time of 2:25.5 in results for 800m
when she was 10secs slower when winning B heat (no new score/placing yet).
800A? Lorna M lost valuable points in Javelin, having played safe after
two no throws. Adam Dalby dropped down table a lot, when being disqualified
in IB Hurdles. He clocked 52.3 in 400m. Niall Flannery must have
clocked pb in 800m. John Corrigan was second fastest in 80m Hurdles (12.3)
but dropped to 12th (2017) at finish. Chloe Gill's LJ was probably a pb.
Guest of honour presenting Day 2 medals was Derek Hayward.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. Weather bright

direction, but did not help males much. However, the womens' times were
faster.
Actually 3 Mens' 100m races and very surprisingly 2 for Senior Women.
Meeting held up slightly due to movement of photo finish camera. Unfortunately
no photo finish for U13G 100m, where a Gateshead club record was achieved
by Jessica Read.
Learnt R Willi has now "retired". Also some dodgy decisions (thought
Philippa McGregor was 2nd in 100m to name 1). Unofficially MoM performances
were: Male: D Barratt Female: Arnold, Read or Pearson.

National Junior Athletics League.
Tyne Division. Gateshead International Stadium. Sun 19th June.
Gateshead Harriers Harriers had to settle for third place in yesterday's
third National Junior League Womens' Tyne Division fixture, at the International
Stadium. The Tynesiders were narrowly beaten by the two Scottish clubs
losing any chance of victory, when finishing last in the final event, the
4 x 400m Relay. Gateshead were earlier impressive winners of the sprint
Relay. Middlesbrough-Mandale in the Mens' match were again narrowly beaten
by the Scottish visitors. Andrew Wiles scored well winning the 1500m and
3000m and finishing 2nd in the 800m.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather hot and breezy early

times after meeting, with Middlesbrough finishing 2nd in Mens' competition.
Late info from Angus Lumb. Wind affected sprint times a lot. Gateshead's
4 x 100m team was Carly Jones, Sophie De La Hunt, Phillipa McGregor and
Kirsty Thomas. Competing for Middlesbrough was Emma Lachs (won B 400mH
in 73.3). McMichael's 400m Hurdles was almost certainly a pb. Results from

3M Newton Aycliffe 10km Road Race.
Sun. 19th June.
Morpeth Harrier, Terry Wall overcame the hot conditions to win yesterday's
3M Newton Aycliffe 10km Road Race for the third successive year. Wall dropped
his main rival, Rickie Wilson of Scarborough approaching the halfway point.
The lead had extended to 55secs at the finish line. In a good battle for
third place Martin Grainger of Darlington held off his veteran rival, Tim
Field of Sunderland.
Durham University student, Aiveen Fox smashed the 6-year-old course
record by 79secs, to win the Womens' race, also beating her personal best
by 84secs. The current North of England Junior Cross Country champion,
came home nearly 2mins ahead of Darlington's Bernadette Taylor with Hannah
Wootton of North Shields Poly, finishing third. Derwentside's Susan Laws
was the first veteran.

322 finishers (last time: 72:07). Notable absentees were Ian Thomas and
Max Coleby (at wedding in South). Race started about 8mins late, due to
(too) early Road closures. Hannah Wootton was one of late arrivals and
WM took 30mins to find venue arriving halfway through race. Weather getting
hotter as race progressed, with several strugglers in later stages. Aiveen
(15th overall) was star actually breaking Sheila Allen's previous record
of 37mins 5secs, by 78secs. She and Taylor were together with 2 laps remainng,
before breaking clear. Other personality performances included: 164 M Stephenson
50:43. Eileen Armstrong clocked 54:29, but not sure if she was 1st W65
as veteran categories were only up to W55. Only in 10 year age-groups also.

Inter Counties Schools Meeting.
Hexham. Sat. 18th June.
Durham won the overall Trophy for the fourth successive year, at Saturday's
Inter Schools Meeting, held in ideal conditions at a very warm Tynedale
Park, Hexham.
Kineta Kelall clocked a personal best time to win the Intermediate
300m and on the field, 2004 English Schools Junior champion Philip Collins
cleared a personal best height to win the Intermediate High Jump. In the
corresponding Girls' event, Rebecca Pottinger also cleared a personal best
for victory. Combined events specialist, Danny Brown gained a double victory
in the 80m Hurdles and Long Jump. Lorna McMichael opened the day's proceedings
with victory for Durham in the Intermediate 300m Hurdles. For Northumberland,
Lauren Dewdney easily won the Intermediate 80m Hurdles and Ross Murray
was successful in the Junior 1500m. Schools Cross Country Internationals
Laura Weightman (Northumberland) and Kate Avery (Durham) fought out a close
battle in the Junior 1500m, with Weightman proving too fast for her rival
in the final 50m.
Mary Ferrier clocked a personal best time to win the Senior 3000m.
Host county Cumbria (the match should have been held at Sheepmount
Stadium, a victim of the January floods) gained some impressive victories
notably Richard Byers who won the Junior High Jump, Sam Coe the Intermediate
Hammer and James Wright, like Byers a recent winner of the Northern Championships
in the Intermediate 100m Hurdles. Katie Jenkinson gained an impressive
double victory in the Junior Hurdles and High Jump. Cleveland's top performers
in the match were Richard Kilty, who won the Intermediate 100m and Ricky
Stevenson in the Intermediate 1500m. The guesting Senior Boys' squad performed
with distinction, with 2004 English Schools' silver medallist James Minter
winning the 800m.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. A good meeting held in very
hot conditions. Thanks to Cumbria Schools (assisted by Dorothy Best) for
results. No Field event results for Seniors available, but would not have
been many competing. Only the 100m times seemed to be affected (slight
breeze against). Possibly change to scoreline but no affect overall result.
In IG 1500m, Rachel Adams finished 4th (5:14.7) and Laura Dixon 5th (5:20.6).
Durham IG relay team was L McMichael, R Wilmshurst, K Kelsall and L Cowell.
Junior team included L Welch (leg 2) and N Pearson (leg 4). Wright competes
for Sale, Coe was listed as Norfolk Schools in 2004, but D Thompson (Durham
Javelin thrower) unknown to me.

Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 11th June.
North of England Junior champion, Lianne Tucker of Newcastle bettered
a 39-year-old record to win the Senior Discus at Saturday's Northumberland
Schools Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium. Tucker added
3.36m to the figures previously set by Dorothy Chipchase (then Swinyard).
Newcastle's Kieran Flannery diverted from his normal 400mH/800m double
to win a good quality Senior 400m in a personal best time, taking four-tenths
of a second off the previous record.
Ben Walpole of Tynedale and Tom Patton of Newcastle occupied
the minor places.
Kieran's brother Niall Flannery won the Junior Long Jump with a personal
best distance, and was also 2nd to Newcastle's Ryan Donaldson in a close
80m Hurdles.
Richard Harrison of Tynedale gained a sprint double in the Intermediate
category, a feat repeated by Newcastle's John Summers (Junior) and North
Tyneside's Jenny Graham (Senior Girls).
Dean Barratt of Newcastle (Intermediate Hammer) and Daniel Blackett
of North Tyneside (Intermediate Triple Jump), both bettered the National
qualifying standard in their respective events.
Lauren Dewdney of Newcastle clocked a fast time in the Intermediate
80m Hurdles, and in the Junior 1500m, Laura Weightman of North North'd
and Natalie Young (East North'd) both bettered the standard.

out after 500m. Laura Dixon was 2nd in Inter 1500m (5:22.3). Probably 2'
between Graham and McGregor (a good run) in SG 100m. Manual results courtesy
of RGS team. Meeting took longer than usual as there were many heats, sometimes
to eliminate one runner. Not sure of year of previous SB 400m record, but
it was set by Tom Lavender.

Nike Jim Dewar Blaydon Race.
Thurs. 9th June.
Simon Tonoi maintained the Kenyan dominance easily winning the 25th
Blaydon race, which was re-named this year in memory of race founder Jimmy
Dewar, who died two days after the 2004 event. 3500 lined-up in the streets
of Newcastle on what was a warm and sunny evening, but coming out of the
city after the first mile, competitors faced a stiff headwind for the rest
of their journey. Tonoi made his bid for victory at the 1M point and extended
his advantage throughout to 26secs over Midlands-based compatriot Wilf
Traragon, who was also 2nd in 2004. Dereje Kebede a former Ethiopian seeking
British citizenship, took third place ahead of 19-year-old Kenyan John
Murithii.
"I was always confident" the winner stated " The gap was opening wider
and wider, I was never worried". "People are all supporting you and telling
you to keep on going. I'll definitely be back". Tonui was having his first
run in the race, having arrived in the country 24hours earlier, using it
as preparation for a Half Marathon in Stoke three days later.
The battle for 5th place and first North Eastern Counties qualified
athlete, was won by David Wardle ahead of Mark Hudspith. However Hudspith
took the £500 prize for the first local for the 3rd year running
as Wardle, who travelled up from London to attend a wedding, does not compete
for a North East club. Hudspith however, thought Wardle deserved to win
the prize.
With 4 runners in the first 11, Morpeth took the team prize for the
third succesive year. Dave Robertson a former M40 winner in the London
Marathon, was the leading veteran in 13th position. Peter Embleton, first
overall veteran in 2004, retained the M50 title.
Another Kenyan, Cathy Mutwa, who like Taragon competes for Birchfield
Harriers, won the Womens' race finishing in 34th position overall. Mutwa
had previously finished 3rd in 2003, but only 6th last year. Nearly a minute
adrift in second was Birhan Dagne, who was the winner from 1998 - 2000.
Alyson Dixon was the first local runner in 3rd, leading Chester Le Street
to the team title. Leading veteran in 6th was former International, Jill
Boltz who was the overall winner from 1985 - 1988. Sarah Tunstall was the
first junior, for the 2nd succesive year.
Neil and Sarah Wilkinson won the "Me and Wor Lass" trophy (combined
time of man and wife), from Steven and Meryl Dodd.

A better turn-out than at Meeting 1. Denis Field's Javelin throw tops
this year's British rankings. Might be going blind, but thought Readman
was ahead of Wilson in combined 200m ! Surprisingly no George Routledge,
but Chris Foote Wood made up for it in 3000m. Reg Checkley finished 2nd
in 200m (34.9), and Allen Mulliss clocked 12:24.1 in 3000m.
