The Newcastle University athlete, off a handicap of 10mins, moved through to 15th place, clocking her best time for the course. Rob Walker of North Shields Poly, off 12mins, was the fastest overall, and first across the line was Philip Jameson of Tynedale.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. Weather: Light rain at start but fared up. Quite breezy. 96 finishers. Ted Joynson arrived late so was not given his usual healthy start. It was only about 7mins this time. His estimated time, finishing last, was 45:30. Major errors in initial results, (full set received too late for both Journal and AW), showed that Wootton was actually 54th in 19:57. Also Heslop only clocked 19:11 (now third fastest). Juliette Oldfield, a former Junior International, now lives in Jesmond. She finished 26th overall. Other times included Mark McNally 19:34. Women: J Elliott 21:58; G Cavill 22:28; H Lambert 22:51; V Haswell 23:16; L Brown (now living in Jesmond) 23:26; N Dawson 23:29. Dave Whitmore finished 16th (26:39). .

Additional Comments: Only results sent (no time pm Sunday), but not used. Weather was beautiful until mid afternoon, when previous day's unpleasant conditions returned. Eric Smart finished 4th (24.41) (beaten out of bronze medal, in the same place, by I think the same athlete that won the 100m) (confirmed as J Wright/N Vets). Phil Jones finished 5th (24.50). Star performer was Steve Peters, who won the 200m (23.20), adding to his previous day's victories in the 100m (11.7) and 400m (52.71). Geoff Oliver and Steve Charlton were again victorious in the M70 (42:55.46) and M75 10000m (43:39.31). (Derek Howarth 2nd in M70 45:24.21 and B Campbell 3rd 45:53.40). Gordon Porteous set new figures in 800m (4:39.45), but only completed two laps of 10000m (still he is a lot faster than TJ). Good run by Lynne Marr.
Even more results to trawl, so apologies for any omissions. Programme not quite as long as Day 1, finishing at 6.00pm

British Masters Track and Field Championships.
Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.  Sat. 26th June.
North East athletes were among the medals, on the opening day of the British Masters Track and Field Championships, at a damp Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Ian Barnes of Darlington added to his already large tally of medals, by gaining a double victory in the M65 1500m and 5000m. Bob Laidler of Sunderland retained his titles in the M75 Discus and Javelin. Eric Smart of Gateshead and Phil Jones of Wallsend, gained the minor medals in the M45 100m, with Jones later taking the silver in the 400m.
Day 1 Selected Results.
M45: 100: 2 E Smart (Gate) 12.1; 3 P Jones (Walls) 12.3  400: 2 P Jones 54.12

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 28th June 2004).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather conditions: Heavy showers (particularly in early part of meeting) and quite strong wind. Affected longer races more than sprints, though some results showed -4.00 or 5.00m in 100m.  Not a great turn-out from North East athletes. However, John Wild a top performer in the region, missed out on the medals. Eric Smart buckled in last 10m, to let in winner. Phil Jones finished strongly in 400m. Archie Jenkins dropped out in early stages of M50 5000m, after leading on opening lap.
Other winners included Geoff Oliver (M70 5000m), Steve Charlton (M75 5000m) (sorry but results not in AW) and Derek Howarth (M70 1500m) (6:01.10). Gordon Porteous set inaugural M90 records in 1500m (9:01.92 a UK rec) and 5000m (31:25.45 a World rec). There were that many results displayed, so due to this I only made note of Vets NE performances. Sincere apologies if any omissions. Very long (9.30am - 6.30pm) day, but quite enjoyable.

North East Catering & Vending Ltd Penshaw Hill Race.
Penshaw Monument.  Wed. 23rd June.
Sunderland  Harrier, Brian Rushworth returned from injury, to repeat his 2003 victory, in last night's Penshaw Hill Race. Rushworth followed early leader Michael Openshaw of Birchfield, but his superior knowledge of the course told, as he strode to a 7secs victory over his rival. This was Rushworth's 12th win in the 14 runnings of this event, but Openshaw took some consolation, in taking the prime prize for reaching the top of the hill first. Paul Gibson of Jarrow and Hebburn, finished in a distant third place. Newcastle University student, Rebecca Robinson, running in the Kendal colours, held off the challenge of Sunderland's Michelle Holt, to win the Womens' race. Third-placed Angela Hunter of Jarrow and Hebburn, won the prime award.
Result.  Distance 3M.

(Newcastle Journal:  Thurs. 24th June 2004).

Additional Comments: Surprisingly being a midweek event, that all info was used. Weather overcast, damp at first but dried up, though got windier. 80 finishers which must be near a record. Other placings included: 11 N Morris (Low F, M40) 18:46; 12 C Robson (unatt) 18:54
Women: 7 P Embleton (Sun, W35) (was W55 at Ryhope !) 25:07; 8 L Tweedle (H&P) 25:30

Inter Counties Schools Meeting.
Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough.  Sat. 19th Jun.
Durham won the Overall Trophy for the third succesive year, but the wet and windy conditions for most of the meeting, affected performances at Saturday's annual Inter Counties Schools match, at Middlesbrough. Yusuf Aliu of Cleveland, the double North Eastern and Northern champion, gained an easy sprint double in the Junior Boys' age-group, and also anchored the Relay team to victory. North Eastern champion, Rebekah Wilmshurst gained a National standard when winning the Junior Girls' 200m. Samantha Coleby of Durham, easily won the Junior 75m Hurdles. Jenny Graham of Northumberland, maintained her excellent form to win the Intermediate 100m and 200m. Double Northern and North Eastern champions, John Taylor of Cleveland and Khalid Thompson of Durham, easily won the Intermediate and Junior 1500m races. Andrew Coffer of Durham, clocked a fast time in the Intermediate 3000m. Scott Henderson of Cleveland, another double champion, won the Intermediate 400m Hurdles. James Wright in the Intermediate 100m Hurdles, Nick Bradley (Inter 800m) and Rachel Fleary in the Junior Shot and Javelin, were Cumbria's most impressive winners. Best of the non-scoring races, was the Senior 800m, where Cleveland's James Minter was a convincing winner, leading 7 runners, through the 2minute barrier.

Additional Comments: Most of  report  used. Results courtesy of Martin Gordon and Andy Ward. Heavy showers until an hour before finish (when it turned out very nice), and a strongish wind (though sprint times seemed unaffected). Lack of officials (mainly due to a clash with Cleveland Youth Games), meant meeting started late. As only one High Jump bed was available, and long throws could not be held at same time, field events were not completed by 5.30 (finish normally 4.30). The Girls' Discus events were most affected. Track events were all right, but there was a half hour break, before Relays to held some field eventers to catch up. Biggest disappointment was the absence of Lauren Dewdney, which meant that the big clash with Samantha Coleby did not take place. The latter looked very impressive. She also led the Junior Relay team, which also included Laura Welsh, Nicola Pearson and Rebekah Wilmshurst. The Durham Intermediate Relay team included Lorna McMichael (leg 3) and Laura Hunter (leg 4), but Kirsty Thomas was absent. The rest of SB 800m result was 4 A Pigford 1:56.9; 5 P Stockton 1:57.6; 6 P Waite 1:58.7; 7 I Ruddick 1:59.4  Other performances included: SG 400H: 1 N Dawson 76.3  IG 3000: 4 C Gilmore 12:05.5. Sophie Evans actually leapt 10.51m in Triple Jump. This was entered incorrectly on results sheets (how many more ?).
Results of Inter County Schools Meeting (at York) included: SB 400: 1 T Crow 50.3  IB 800: 1 A Lagan 2:02.7  JG 800: 1 A Wheatman 2:23.5

Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sat. 12th Jun.
Four new records were set at Saturday's Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium. Despite the blustery conditions, Kieran Flannery from Newcastle Royal Grammar School, who set new figures at Intermediate level in 2003, took three-tenths of a second off the old record, when winning the Senior 400m Hurdles. Flannery recently won the European Schools' title. Defending champion and current North Eastern Counties' title holder, Lauren Dewdney from Central High, Newcastle, broke the record in the Junior Girls' 75m Hurdles on two occasions. Her heat time was two-tenths of a second inside the old figures, but in less favourable conditions, she was a tenth slower in the final. Steven Cathcart of Newcastle bettered the old figures in the Junior 400m, by a tenth-of-a-second. Katherine Ellis of Royal Grammar , improved the record by 17cms, in the Senior Girls' Shot. Newcastle's Lianne Tucker who was second in the Shot, later won the Discus, but the current North Eastern champion, was still well short of Dorothy Chipchase's (then Swinyard), 1968 record.
Richard Harrison of Tynedale was an easy winner of the Intermediate 100m in a National qualifying time. Jenny Graham of North Tyneside gained a sprint double in the Intermediate age-group gaining National standards in both events. Lauren Kirton of East Nothumberland, also gained the standard in the Junior High Jump. Nathan Shrubb of North Tyneside, maintained his impressive form in the Steeplechase, to win the Senior 2000m event. Jonathan Young of East Northumberland gained a double victory in the Intermediate age-group, with wins in the 1500m and 3000m. Max Mullins (North Tyneside) won the Junior 100m and 200m. Ben Jones of East Northumberland gained victories in the Junior Long Jump and High Jump.

Additional Comments: Most of report used. Results courtesy of RGS stalwarts. Weather bright but breezy. Strong headwind on back straight. Got stronger as meeting progressed, but annoyingly, conditions were really beautiful when meeting finished. Other performances included Natalie Dawson winning SG 400m Hurdles (80.2) and finishing third in 800m (2:40.2). Chloe Gilmore was 3rd in Inter 800 (2:33.2) and Laura Dixon was 4th in JG 800m (2:35.4). Mary Ferrier (sole competitor) ran with Inter Boys. Think 3000m races for Senior and Inter Boys should have been combined (2 in Senior Men), and Sam Crowe probably should have ran with Inter Girls, rather than Junior Boys in 1500m. Lewis Timmins could have been a lot faster, but eased off final lap. Ryan Stephenson ran with Inter Boys. Was impressed with A Jessett in Junior G 1500m, and apologies as I have never heard of her before. Good performances from Gina Rutherford. A good race in Senior B 800m between Stephenson, Flannery and Tom Patton did not materialise, and this event did not take place. Poor entry in Senior events altogether.
Thought judges' verdict on JB 100m was dodgy.

Nike Blaydon Race.
Wed. 9th Jun
Julius Kimtai won the 24th running of this popular event, gaining victory for the fifth time. The start was delayed 20mins because of ongoing traffic problems in central Newcastle, before the 3600 strong field were sent on their way, in the bright sunshine,  Kimtai, successful from 1999 - 2002, pulled away from the opposition, after the first mile. He was closely pursued by fellow Kenyan, Wilfred Taragon (19), who was 8th and leading junior in 2003. Fighting a strong headwind throughout, Kimtai crossed the finishing line in Blaydon Car Park, 12secs clear of his rival. Kasse Tadesse, maintaining his improved form, finished another 22secs adrift in 3rd place. 2003 winner, Tesfaye Eticka representing Switzerland had to settle for 4th this time. Kimtai now has eye set on Mike McLeod's record of second victories. "I missed last year's race because I was competing in America. But I am back and have reclaimed my title. I'll definitely be back next year. I want a sixth title, and then a 7th". In the battle to be the first North East athlete, Mark Hudspith (6th) just held off the challenge of new Morpeth clubmate, Martin Scaife. He earned a £500 prize courtesy of the Universal Buliding Society. With good support from Mark Brown (15th), David Swinburne (16th) and teenager Andrew Lawrence (43rd)  (Scaife is unable to count yet), Hudspith led Morpeth to a successful defence of the team title. Peter Embleton now in the M50 category, was the leading veteran in 24th position.
Kenya also provided the winner of the Womens' race, with Miryam Wangari improving one place from 2003. Wangari finished in 26th position overall, narrowly beating previous 3-times winner from 1998-2000, Birhan Dagne. "I know Dagne was going to be strong so I didn't want to try and break away too early. She was with me all the way. It was only at the very end that I managed to get a bit of distance between us. It was a very tough race."
Julia Bleasdale finished in an isolated third place, with 4th position being occupied by leading veteran, Fiona Lothian, who won this race ten years ago. First local runner in 7th place was Alyson Dixon, who was closely followed by another veteran, Denise Todd, who led Jarrow and Hebburn, to the team title. Sarah Tunstall was the first junior in 17th position.
The ME & WOR LASS Trophy, for the best combined time of husband/wife was won by Bob Birchall (9th) together with AW's Liz (519th/42nd woman in 40:44).

Footnote: Learnt on following Sunday, from Frank Watson, the tragic news, that Jimmy Dewar, the race supremo since the start, had been found dead in his home on the Saturday. Apparently he could have passed away the previous evening.

Daniel Hubbard won the male award after winning the Under 15 Long Jump. Middlesbrough fiinished in 3rd place, but gained some consolation when Adam Allison was voted the best track performer after defeating North Eastern champion, Steven Cathcart of Gateshead in the Under 15 400m. Additional Comments: Only report used. Results (courtesy of  Kevin Flannery and helpers) appeared Tuesday (8th). Apologies to Tom Perrins as I overlooked his U15 Pole Vault win (2.30m). Gateshead outclassed the opposition, leading to the fact that there were many events, without the full compliment of 8 competitors. Not good enough for the Premier League. Nevertheless a good meeting. Kirsty Thomas was returning after back problems. She was beaten by Annabel Lewis (Hull) in 100m (12.5) but gained revenge in 200m (25.8). The winning U17W Relay team was (as in results): Kinita Kelsall (2nd in Long Jump/5.00m), Anastasia Dopierala (an impressive double Hurdles winner), Kirsty Thomas and Lauren Arthur. However, I think they ran in a different order with Thomas on leg 4. Taking 2nd places in the U17 1500m (though well behind Hull runners) were stalwarts Lyndsey Dodsworth (5:23.2) and Chloe Gilmore (5:24.5). Claire Harrison was 2nd in U17 3000m (11:24.2). Catching the "eye" as a track judge, was Claire Eyeington.
Extra info (from AW): At the Division 1 match at Sheffield, New Marske finished 3rd. C Hill was their only winner in the U15 Long Jump (5.61m). Border won the Division 2 match at Hexham.

North of England Track and Field League.
Sat. 5th June.
Middlesbrough AC retained their lead in the Division 2 table, after winning Saturday's second North of England League fixture, at York. David Smith gained a sprint double, while Andrew Teate and North of England Under 17 1500m champion, John Taylor gained maximum points in the 800m, the latter in a personal best time. Marise Barclay gained victories in both the Womens' 100m and 200m and for good measure, also won the Javelin. Morpeth took second place, with Paul Reed gaining his usual double victory in the Shot and Discus. Nathan Shrubb a first year junior, making his debut in the event, was an impressive winner of the Steeplechase. Nisha Desai won the Womens' 1500m and 400m Hurdles and also took the B Triple Jump.
Scarborough won the Division 3 fixture at Chester Le Street, thanks mainly to fielding a full Womens' team. A lack of Women athletes, meant that the strongest Male track club, North Shields Poly finished in 6th position.

Additional Comments: Division 2 results courtesy of Andy Ward. Julia Straker and Rachel Abbs were 2nd and 3rd in Long Jump (5.20m and 5.07m). Apparently meeting fell an hour behind schedule. From memory, I think it is difficult to the stick to the Field event timetable, at this (York) stadium. No such problems at Chester Le Street, where it was a pleasant but coolish day. The meeting started 15mins late, as Border's coach broke down. However, the turn-out in the Womens' competition was very poor ( 4 was about the maximum number in any combined A/B event). Other performances included 400: 2 Ryan Stephenson 53.4  W800: 2 Maxine Czarnicka 2:34.2

Sunderland's Gavin Massingham held off the strong challenge of the in-form Nick McCormick of Morpeth, in the BMC 800m, which was incorporated in the Veterans League meeting, at Jarrow. 400m specialist, Jared Deacon led the field through the bell (53.0), before the 2003 A.A.A finalist took control on the second lap. North Eastern U20 800m champion, Sam Hart of Gateshead, came with a late run, clocking a personal best time, to win the Womens' 1500m

Additional Comments: Weather cool but dry. Little wind. Other BMC placings included: W1500:
8 Julia Orr 4:53.3; 9 Danielle Watts 4:54.5; 10 Chloe Gilmore 5:24.2 (slightly outclassed). Mark Cochrane was first across line,  but awkward situation was that he was well outside AW standard. Bell time for B 800m was 59.8. Greg Ritchie clocked 2:30.3 (Vince Wilson was pacemaker for this and 1500m). Nice to see Susan Coates back in action, though she went unnoticed among veteran rivals. Seemed to be a bigger turn-out this time with more races. However, there have been few Women track performers, though a fair amount in field events.
Reg Checkley, who only arrived back from New Zealand the same morning after 27hour journey, clocked 3:06.0 for 800m. He gained two team medals in Auckland (not listed in AW). Other Heaton performances were: M45: 3000: A Mulliss 12:02.8  M55:  3000: G Routledge 16:08.7  HT: 4 G Routledge 15.84  JT: 4 G Routledge 20.30  M70: 800: H Craven 3:46.6  (nb. as races were combined and age-groups were not listed on results sheet, exact placing in category, in some cases not known). Eric was 8th in older race.
