Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 30th June.
Morpeth Harrier, Paul Johnson clocked the fastest time at last night's third race, in the Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap Series. Johnson finished in 38th position. First across the line was Philippa Marsden, who took advantage of a generous handicap to win by over a minute. Morpeth's Aiveen Fox was the fastest lady.
Result. Distance 5.5km.
1 P Marsden (unatt, L) 26:00; 2 D Reismann (unatt) 27:10; 3 H Beaugy (unatt, L) 28:17; 4 N Chatterjee (unatt) 28:22; 5 K Whitehead (Blay, L) 28:24; 6 D Frazer (unatt) 28:40
Fastest Times: 1 P Johnson (Morp, M40) 18:14; 2 R Stephenson (NSP, U20) 18:21; 3 J Ryall (NSP, U20) 19:06  Women: 1 A Fox (Morp, U20) 21:08; 2 S Graham (Morp, U20) 23:02; 3 H Lambert (unatt, W40) 23:36
(Newcastle Journal: Tues. 1st July 2003).

Additional Comments: Surprisingly all info used. 67 finishers on very wet (though not cold) evening (the heaviest rain since Series began in 1991). Apart from weather turn-out would have been affected by Tynedale 10km 2 days later, and the other "Our Tim" on television. Only 12 on-the-night entries. Obviously surface water would have slowed times down. Winner was off  -1.00. Johnson and Stephenson were back markers off 11.40. Aiveen was off 9:30, which was a bit ungenerous. Other times included: Andrew Lawrence 19:18, Alex Muir and Barry Jameson 19:49, Phil Lancaster 20:40, Rebecca Adams 24:10, Leanne Brown 24:24 and Trish West (9th across line in 24:57).

National Young Athletes League matches involving Gateshead and Morpeth not listed (there were many problems, including result scoring at latter fixture at Hexham.) Schools Multi Event competition at York not yet available either. I gather Samantha Coleby clocked 12.4 in Hurdles, but she had problems in High Jump.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 30th June 2003).

Additional Comments: Just results sent. Weather overcast and dull early on, but sun came through on odd occasion and it got really warm. With a double header and thirteen teams competing, there were nearly three times as many races as higher League matches. There were also some performances worthy of the Premier Division. The fact is these clubs only lack the numbers. Some new faces from Blackhill Bounders and have never seen the impressive Miss Wilmshurst before. Because of intense pressure in the results room (thanks to Brenda and Co for final scores), it was difficult getting any results. I had track info but lacked a lot of names. No field results available, but Rachel Abbs did not compete in Long Jump. Sam Crowe was 5th in 300m in 45.8. She was not happy with her 800m. Lewis Timmins clocked 54.4secs on second leg for Gosforth in 4 x 400m Relay. He moved them up from 4th to 1st (they were eventually 3rd). Helping with timekeeping for Shildon was Mr Turner. Catherine has changed her coach, and is gradually returning to form (nb she also won Long Jump in 4.82 courtesy of AW). Richard is sidelined with injury.

A.A.A of England Junior Championships.
Bedford. Sat/Sun. 28th/29th June.
Local rivals Ryan McLeod of Elswick and Chris Parr of Gateshead had to settle for the minor medals, in yesterday's A.A.A Under 20 1500m championship, at Bedford. Gateshead's Graham Jackson took third place in the Triple Jump and Andrew Smith of Middlesbrough occupied a similar position in the Hammer.
Under 23 Men:  1500: 3 C Mulvaney (Bord) 3:48.36  HT: 3 D Little (Bord) 56.52
Under 20 Men: 1500: 1 T Lancashire (Bolton) 3:49.33; 2 R McLeod (Els) 3:49.70; 3 C Parr (Gate) 3:50.04  TJ: 3 G Jackson (Gate) 14.82  HT: 3 A Smith (Midd) 52.65
Under 23 Women: HJ: 2 S Higham (Bord) 1.63
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 30th June 2003).

Additional Comments: All used. Info from ukathletics website. Surprisingly the first three were listed before 7.00, the same day. McLeod and Parr clocked 3:55.69 and 3:55.31 respectively, in heats, but Lancashire was always the danger (he was timed at 3:53.32). Mark Hood was 6th in U23 5000m (14:46.78) and Adam Rogers (49.03) did not qualify for 400m final. Footnote: Apologies to Mark Christie who won U20 Pole Vault with a personal best height of 5.00m. This event was not listed in original results. Keith Higham was 4th (4.80). Gavin Massingham was 4th in U23 800m (1:49.84) (another pb), Richard Smith 4th in 400mH (52.41), Elaine Smith 4th in Long Jump (5.83), Claire Moore-Griss 4th in Discus (44.22), Craig Sturrock 4th in U20 Shot (15.55), Peter Middleton 4th in 110m Hurdles (15.10), Leslie Richards 7th in Discus (45.20) and Emma Morris 5th in High Jump (1.68). Rachel Nathan made a surprising reappearance, to finish 3rd in 3000m (9:58.19).

Veterans A.A - North East Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sat. 28th June.
The warm and sunny conditions, ensured there were some outstanding performances at Saturday's Veterans' A.A - North East Championships, at Jarrow. It helped that several medalists from the recent British Championships, at Derby were competing. British champion, Steve Smith of Gateshead equalled the record in the Over 40 100m and later narrowly won the 200m from Phil Jones of Wallsend, who had already claimed victory in the 400m. Les Atkinson of Morpeth was untroubled in winning the Over 45 1500m and 5000m. He was chased in the latter by guest athlete Dianne Henaghan of Chester Le Street, who was anxious to test her fitness after sustaining a slight injury after the recent Blaydon race. Henaghan, travels to an International meeting in Barcelona, this weekend. Helen Patton of Gateshead, who was third at Derby, duly won the Over 40 800m, taking half-a-second off her own championship best figures. Earlier she had set a new record in the 400m. Val Hancock of Durham, who broke the British Over 60 5000m record, when winning her category at Derby, set new figures in the 800m and 1500m. Judith Battersby of Elvet, the British bronze medalist over 1500m, clocked a fast time in the Over 40 3000m. Border's Dave Dixon gained a double victory in the Over 40 Long and Triple Jump. In the Over 75 age-group, Jim Caddy of Middlesbrough and Cleveland (1500m and 3000m) and Bob Laidler (Shot, Discus and Javelin) set new championship bests. Laidler also won the Hammer, and Sunderland clubmate Denis Field won all the throws in the Over 70 category. Gary Pemberton of the North East Veterans, had a good day in the Over 50 category winning three events. John Wild (Richmond and Zetland) and Terry Hudson (Jarrow and Hebburn) dominated the Throws in the Over 50 and Over 55 age-groups respectively. Ian Barnes of Darlington (Over 65) gained his usual three middle distance victories. Barry Parnaby of North East Veterans (Over 70) gained a sprint double and set new figures in the Long Jump. Alan Readman of Houghton and Peterlee dominated the Over 45 sprints.

Additional Comments:  Weather was humid, but breeze by trackside. Most of copy used. Sunday Sun report was confusing (it edited section about Henaghan guesting). Poor entry with three a good turn-out for any event per age-group. Ted Joynson was entered as M80, but luckily did not turn up. Thought he would have wanted to set some inaugural "records" ! Alan Mulliss was actually 2nd M45 in 5000m (20:31.9). Nigel Orr stated that Julie was another to clock a pb 800m 3 days earlier at Jarrow. No info on guest competitors listed. The other Brian McKay (some thought it was the original from the results - too fast !), is a Scot and A Kelly is I think, from Carlisle Aspatria. The impression was that the Stewarts were on holiday. Reg Checkley pulled up lame after 250m in the 800m. Phil Jones was only a fraction outside 400m record. The only one of his records Dennis threatened, was in the Hammer. Eric A clocked 6:05 at halfway (faster than his previous 1500m races this season).

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 30th June 2002).

Additional Comments: Will submit results for this date, as info received (courtesy of Kevin Carr) was too late for same night. Knew some details earlier as Angela, came back to Track League meeting. Eric was 60th out of 74 competitors. He expected to be last. Openshaw led early on  and won prime prize. He fell into hole shortly afterwards on downhill stretch, and could not regain the lost ground. This was Rushworth's 11th win in 13 for the event. (Ian Archbold was succesful in 1994 and Terry Wall in 2002). Footnote: Since learned that Allen Mulliss was 53rd in 22:44.
Michelle Ford of course, is another past winner.

North Eastern Athletics League.
Monkton Stadium.  Wed. 25th June.
Sudanese competitors brought an International flavour to the meeting. The athletes have been sent over by their federation, to gain experience at a highly level of competition, and are based at Sheffield. They gained three victories including a double by Muna Jubar, who won both the Womens' 200m and 800m. Abdulla Elsheikh gained an emphatic victory in the 800m, with North Eastern champion, Vince Wilson taking second place. With the strong wind abating as the evening progressed, there were some excellent performances in the 800m races, with a host of athletes gaining personal best times. These included Ryan McLeod and Kirk Wilson (Senior Men) and Sam Hart (Under 17 Women). Double 4x 400m Relay gold medallist Jared Deacon, who is gradually returning to his best form after an indifferent start to the season, comfortably won the 200m from Adam Rogers.

Additional Comments: This is AW report/results as Bill McGuirk got in first with Chronicle. Unless these meetings finish before 8.00, there is no chance info will be ready for next day's Journal. Apologies if mistakes with names of Sudanese athletes. There were varying attempts, but those listed are from League Secretary. I think Mohammed was their manager. For a change the Field events finished before track (Vet's League/Dennis Field please note). However, there were less events than usual, and also no Women High Jumpers. Nevertheless this was the largest mid-season overall entry for some time, and I think since I covered for them, a record number of AW standard achievers. There were even two heats in both Senior Womens' events. The early wind helped the sprinters and conditions were near perfect (cool, bright and little wind), when middle-distance events started. Non AW standard winners were: U17 Men: HT: R Ward (H&P) 32.82  U15 Boys HT: D Barrett (Gate) 31.01  U17 Women: 800: N Turnbull (Sun) 2:35.7. Victoria Wester was unlucky to miss standard winning B 200m in 27.1. Bell time in Mens' 800m was 55.1 (another unknown Sudan runner) and Jubar led all way going through 400m in 62/63. Ryan Stephenson won B 800m in 2:03.0, beating a lack-lustre John Moore (2:05.0) (has he been injured ?).
Mark McLeod also gained a pb in third (2:06 approx). Emma Spoor and Stephanie Crowell gained pb's as did Sam Crowe and Jonathon Young. In 5000m, Sean Kirtley was 6th (16:56.4) outsprinting Andrew Lawrence (16:57.8). Young Morrell is son of Tony. Good run for a sprinter, by Gemma Morgan in 800m. Vicky Carmichael did not fare so well (2:34 approx). Unofficial best performers were Adam Dalby (200m)(= Grade 1) and Spoor (Grade 1 by 12secs).

Weekly Round-up
(to 22nd June)
Gateshead Harriers won their second National Junior League match at Grangemouth (22nd June). Middlesbrough-Mandale finished 6th. For Gateshead, Craig Crawford-Glanville set a pb in the 400m for a second successive day. This time it was a clear improvement with a time of 49.17secs. This was after winning 400m Hurdles (55.98). Ben Walpole won B 400m in 50.30. Chris Lamb was successful in 3000m (8:53.07), John Stacey won Triple Jump (12.97) and the 4 x 100m team gained victory (43.49). Alex Haynes clocked his fastest 2000m Steeplechase for a while to finish 2nd (6:18.90). The Gateshead Womens' team were not as successful finishing 7th. With no A string victories, best performances came from Titi Ameobi (3rd in both sprints, 12.51 and 25.03) and Vicky Carmichael (won B 100m in 12.82 and 2nd in 400m in 58.24). Vicky Wester won B 400m (58.95). Emma Morris was 2nd in High Jump (1.70m) and 3rd in 100m Hurdles (15.39). Emma Foster was 2nd in Hammer (36.91). In the Tyne (?) Division at Carlisle, Border were 2nd and Houghton and Peterlee were 5th in Mens' competition. Keith Higham won Pole Vault (4.60). In Womens' match, the positions were 1st and 3rd. D Phan won Pole Vault (2.30) from Kelly Rodmell (2.20). Rodmell also won Hammer (32.31).
Medallists at British Masters' 5km at Horwich (22nd June), included Dave McLachlan, who was first in M40 section (15:25), Val Hancock (1st W60) (21:28), Christine Lee (2nd W60) (22:01), Ian Barnes (1st M65) (19:28) and Jim Caddy (1st M75) (25:34). Caroline Ratcliff was 4th in W35 category (19:08). Times courtesy of AW (2nd July), but W60 performances not listed (these courtesy of race-results website). League results courtesy of magazine.
Elswick Harriers Judith Nutt and Andrea Banner, took the first two places in the Womens' Road Race at the UK Corporate Challenge at Blaydon, on Saturday 21st June. Nutt representing BASF clocked 46:18 ahead of Banner (Dickinson Dees) (48:11). Chester Le Street's Gareth Thraves (Northumbria Water) was second in the Mens' event in 41:51 behind Ryan Gorry of Boston (38:21). Considering this was a supposed high profile event, I would have thought the race would be an exact 10km. Instead, each of the two laps (next to Blaydon Rugby Club) was unofficially 5.9km. A Loftus Harrier, was third in the one lap event, though I was unable to find out his name (he looked like Stephen Hepples, though was obviously a lot slower). Wind dropped completely but one or two showers, along with sunshine.
At opening night of competition (20th June) at the UK Corporate Challenge, Dickinson Dees won the mixed 4 x 1600m Relay, at Jarrow. Andrea Banner ran the third leg in 5:54. Very windy conditions.
At the English Schools Cup Regional Final at Jarrow on 18th June, it was the distance runners that were more impressive. The conditions (cooler and quite windy) did not help sprinters. Gina Rutherford (Valley Gardens) won the Junior 1500m (5:17.2) and in the Inter event, Mary Ferrier (Ponteland) was successful (5:05.4) from C Reay (Ryton) (5:12.9). Catherine Turner (Tudhoe Grange) won the Inter 100m (13.8). The Junior Girls' 800m was won by G McMeiken (Emmanuel) in 2:40.8, from Cloe Miller (daughter of Lesley) (Valley Gardens) (2:50.5). Sam Duffy (Ponteland) won Inter 800m in 2:31.2. John Gibson and Tom Perrins
(Royal GS) dominated the Junior Boys' 1500m with times of 4:41.8 and 4:53.6. Andrew Coffer (Hermitage) won Inter 1500m (4:25.0) and Chris Walpole (Ponteland) won 400m (55.1). James Sinclair (Prudhoe HS) was 3rd (56.7) behind S Spraggon (St Aidens) (56.0). Niall Flannery won Junior 800m B event in 2:28.3. Andrew Spoor (St Aidens) won Inter 800m (2:08.7), from D Ellis (Hermitage) (2:10.2), with Jonathon Pearson (Ponteland) clocking a pb of 2:11.8 in 3rd.
Steve Hepples won the 1500m at Trafford Grand Prix (17th June) in 3:54.11. At North Yorkshire/South Durham League meeting at Darlington,
Julia Orr won U17 1500m in 4:48.4.
At the English Schools Cup qualifier at Monkton on 16th June, there were some good performances in the cooler breezy conditions. Sophie De la Hunt (Central HS) won the Inter 100m (12.8) from Roisin Willi (King Edward) (13.3). Northern Under 15 Girls' champion, A Lewis (Hull) won Junior 200m in 25.5. In an exciting Inter 1500m, Jessica Taylor (Northallerton) (5:01.6), outsprinted Delyth James (King Edward) (5:02.7) with Angharad Porteous (King Edward) third (5:21.2). James Sinclair (Duchess) won Inter Boys 100m (11.3) and Peter Robson (Duchess) won Inter 1500m (4:28.7) from Scott Dixon (Redcar) (4:31.6). Callum Watson (St Cuthberts) outsprinted teammate A Jessup in the Junior 1500m (4:46.5 to 4:47.2). Footnote: No field event results available on day, but only result of note (from AW) was Simon Egdell (Duchess) winning Intermediate Long Jump (6.01). No final match scores listed, but I gather St Cuthberts (Junior Boys) and Duchess (Intermediate Boys), are through to final at Southampton on 5th July.

Croxdale 10M Road Race.
Tudhoe, Spennymoor.  Sun. 22nd June.
Terry Wall of Morpeth was a runaway winner of yesterday's Croxdale 10M Road Race, at Tudhoe. Wall soon headed the field on the tough four lap course, and passing halfway in 25:47, had extended his advantage to 1min 31secs at the finish over Sunderland veteran Tom Doughty. The runner-up, has recently moved to the area, and was a member of Nene Valley club. Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee finished in tenth place overall, bettering her own course record set in 2001, by 17secs. The race incorporated the Veterans A.A - North East championship, and with no late entries qualifying for these medals, Allen was actually the first official finisher for the association.
Result.
1 T Wall (Morp) 52:52; 2 T Doughty (Sun, M40) 54:23; 3 R Hand (Dur, M40) 58:35; 4 E Makin (Dur) 59:28; 5 M Ingram (Crook, M45) 60:49; 6 D Armstrong (Els) 61:00; 7 P Morgan (SSh, M45) 61:48; 8 B McMillan (Clare) 61:55; 9 P Addyman (Clare) 62:11; 10 L Christopher (Sun, M55) 62:46  Further Veterans: M50 - S Winter (CleS) 63:19  M60 - R Moore (Tyne) 74:08  M65 - J Prudham (J&H) 74:33  M70 - W McNeil (Dur) 79:27  Team: Durham City 26
Women: 1 S Allen (H&P) 62:15 (Course rec); 2 K Bentley (Birt, W35) 70:43; 3 Y Swinhoe (Els, W45) 72:13; 4 J Heatherington (unatt) 75:09; 5 L Woods (N Marske, W50) 76:32; 6 V Williams (Gosf, W35) 79:16; 7 E Armstrong (Tyne, W60) 82:07; 8 D Sheriff (unatt) 85:49
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 23rd June 2003).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Very wet before race, but dried up and got sunnier and warmer as race developed. 84 finishers, which is much better than 2002, but no where near good enough ? Overall standard in main race was poor, and veterans' quality, with some exceptions, was dreadful. I also understand British Veterans' 5km was held same day. Val Hancock was down to run (further info later). As there was a time limit of 2hrs (police advice), Ted Joynson still sent in entry, even though this fact was clearly stated on entry form. This was returned and he was not happy. Terry Wall's lap times were 12:43, 25:47, and 39:11. First two mile splits (from lead bike) were 4:56 and 10:06. His advantage after lap 1 was 14secs. Not sure what the problem with Rob Hand was ? Paul Johnson was 4th after lap 1, and dropped out before halfway when 6th. Heaton fielded three competitors. Allen Mulliss was 39th (73:59), Lynn Swanson (81st in 92:00 and 10th lady), and Harry Craven (84th in 1:41:04). Harry was only relegated to last, on the final lap. Allen and Lynn because of the late entries rule, gained silver medals in their categories, as did Harry.
There is a slight hope race will continue next year. There is a meeting due shortly in Max's house.

Inter Counties Schools Track and Field Meeting.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sat. 21st June.
Durham comfortably retained the overall Trophy at Saturday's Schools Inter Counties' event, at Jarrow. Hosts, Northumberland took second place, though they were strongest in the Boys section. The near perfect conditions meant many athletes gained qualifying marks, for this year's National Championships, at Sheffield.
In a top class Senior 3000m, Ryan McLeod (Northumberland) finished strongly with Durham's Chris Parr taking place, also setting a National qualifying time. Kieran Flannery of Northumberland defeated his great rival, Daniel Pope of Durham in the Intermediate 400m Hurdles. Craig Crawford-Glanville of Durham, the National Junior champion in 2001, won the Intermediate 400m shaving a fraction off his personal best time. Lewis Timmins of Northumberland, also gained the National standard when winning the 1500m. Drew Graham was another to achieve the standard winning the Senior 800m. For Cumbria Adrian Holliday broke his personal best time by 7secs, to win the Intermediate 1500m Steeplechase. Dean Daniels of Cleveland clocked a fast time to win the Intermediate 200m. Louis McElwee gained a sprint double in the junior age-group. Northern champion, James Minter impressively won the Intermediate 800m. It was the Durham Girls who took the Field event honours. Rachel Abbs maintained her regional superiority to win the Intermediate Long Jump. Lianne Tucker, gained qualifying standards when winning the Intermediate Shot and Discus. Katy Wilson defeated her great rival, Kirsty Hutton to win the Junior Shot. Ashley Maddison was also well over standard in taking the Junior Discus.

Additional Comments: Results courtesy of Paul Ponton. Very warm and little wind. Submitted all winners (very few outside AW standard), plus 2nd and 3rd if they were inside standard (most events). However, even though she looked impressive, Emma Wood's 100m win only equalled the AW standard (Catherine Turner was 2nd in 13.5). Crawford-Glanville's best was an electronic 49.52. Not sure if Flannery's time in Steeplechase, was personal best. He hung on for two laps, but Holliday outstayed him. He also made mistake at last barrier in Hurdles race. I think Chris Parr was only attempting to gain standard, rather than win race. Congratulations to him and McLeod, for helping each other with the pace, to get a fast time. Excellent runs as well, from Chris Lamb and Paul Hutton, who were just outside standard. Good run from Julia Orr, but Sam Crowe had nothing again in the final 3 laps. Claire Harrison was 4th in 11:14. Heard from Tony Livingstone that Lynette Tucker has problem with hand, which has restricted her competition this season, but she did win Shot at Durham Schools' Champs. Helping as one of ground staff was "athlete of the past" Gemma Hulme.

North of England Track and Field Championships.
Stretford, Manchester.  Sat 21st June.
Selected Results.
The North East gained several medals at Saturday's North of England Championships, at Stretford. Peter Gordon of Gateshead (51) won the Discus and clubmates, Chris Weitz and Ian Burns, took the Long Jump and Javelin titles, respectively. Former North Shields Poly athlete, Shirley Webb retained her Hammer title. The only track title, went to Middlesbrough-based Richard Smith winning the 400m Hurdles in the colours of Newham and Essex Beagles. Gavin Massingham  of Sunderland improved his personal best time, yet again this season, to finish a close 2nd in the 800m and Karen Johns of Gateshead took second place in the Womens' event, for the second successive year. Emma Morris of South Shields, only a first year junior, took third place in the High Jump.

Additional Comments: Most of copy used. Info courtesy of North of England website, though results advertised for early Saturday night, were not available until Sunday morning. Entry seemed ok in most track events, but poor in Field. An exception was the Womens' 5000m, where the one competitor who turned up, dropped out. Standard though was on the whole, poor for an area championship. Should performances of say, Chris Weitz, be good enough for a gold medal ? Found out Emma's performance from Peter Tate on same afternoon, at Jarrow. Sunderland athletes details from Kevin Carr, though they knew of no other North East medals ! Mark Hood led for most of race.

Additional Comments: Used but edited (also results). 291 finishers which was a record by 45. Due to a large demand for late entries, the start was delayed by 15mins. However, the quality up front for Mens' event, was the poorest, since this has become an established race. Bright but breezy evening, though this was probably the warmest part of the day. Helping at the finish were Sam Crowe and Sara Dodd. Results courtesy of Vera and Sid (George and Audrey were in Norfolk). Excellent run from Jackson Creegan. Category winners not listed were: M65 (unofficial): Ray Laverick (199th in 51:40 just ahead of Dave Whitmore 51:41)  M75: Dennis Moss 61:07  W45: Sue Laws 44:02  W50: Barbara Ingman 47:33  W55: Sue Cain 48:39  W60: Elaine Armstrong 51:34 (Joy Bell 2nd in 54:24). Making a comeback, now back in Elswick colours was Robert Brown (39th in 40:41). David Tait was 278th in 63:28. Heaton fielded eight athletes: 71 Steve Lancaster 42:38; 77 Gary Campbell 43:08; 121 Allen Mulliss 45:55; 128 Howard Gold 46:17; 149 John Josephs 47:29; 176 Jo Parkinson 49:05 (29L); 206 James Ellam 52:15; 227 Lynn Swanson 54:11 (45L). Several regulars (Howard Gold apart) were absent because of Charity Run. Footnote: Third time for Women should read 42:05. Only noticed when result appeared in AW.

Morpeth's Kirk Wilson took second place (3:53.4) from Elswick's Ryan McLeod (3:55.5). Additional Comments: Sent BMC report only but it was not used, until Wednesday. To be fair, space was not booked. Will submit other results for next Monday (23rd). Breezy and a lot cooler than of late. Sam Crowe blew up again dropping from 3rd to 9th (4:57.1). Philippa was left out in front when VW dropped out after 500m. Sam Hart finished strongly coming from a long way back. It was probably her pb, but not 100% sure. Other BMC placings of note:  Men: 6 Stephen Pogue 4:01.2; 7 Sean Moralee 4:02.2; 8 Chris Lamb 4:02.4; 9 Ryan Stephenson 4:06.5(pb?); 10 Alex Haynes 4:07.3 (pb?); 12 Nathan Shrubb 4:12.8(pb?)  Women: 6 Asleigh Gibson 4:51.4 (pb?); 7 Angela Hunter 4:52.1.  Eric A ran much better than his previous 1500m race. Allen Mulliss (5:43.8) and George Routledge (6:59.0) also took part in 1500m. The other Eric (Smart) was conspicuous by his absence. Again there were still Field events (Javelin) taking place when it was go-home time. Denis was annoyed at lack of Field event judges, and nearly (?) refused to compete.

Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships.
Tynedale Athletics Park, Hexham.  Sat. 14th June.
Despite the warm and favourable conditions, only one record was set at Saturday's Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships, at Hexham. However, the meeting started well when Kieran Flannery (Royal Grammar) clocked 54.8 secs to win the 400m Hurdles taking 2.4secs off his own figures set last year. This was also easily a Nationall Schools' qualifying standard. Daniel Burns from Queen Elizabeth High in Hexham, just missed the championship record, to win the Senior High Jump. Earlier he had won his other speciality, the Javelin. Titi Ameobi (Heaton Manor) fought of the strong challenge of Vicky Carmichael (Newcastle College), to win the Senior Girls' 200m in a fast 24.8secs, a fifth-of-a-second ahead of her rival. Drew Graham (Gosforth HS) clocked a fast time to win the Senior 800m and in the 1500m, Ryan McLeod (Tynemouth College) outsprinted Kirk Wilson (Cramlington High), with a last lap inside 57secs.  North of England champion, Lewis Timmins (Heaton Manor) won the Intermediate 1500m and was only three-tenths of a second outside that the National qualifying standard. Richard Harrison (Tynedale Schools) won the Junior 80m Hurdles and 100m. However after winning his 200m heat in 24.0, he was unable to contest the final as he had exceeded his maximum of two events. Brothers Chris and Ben Walpole (Tynedale Schools) won the Junior and Intermediate 400m respectively. North Eastern champion, Sophie De la Hunt (Central High) won the Intermediate Girls 200m and Long Jump.

Additional Comments: All used. Results courtesy of Paul Ponton. Bright afternoon but wind increased, which meant sprint times were on the whole, faster in heats than finals. Impressed by R Appleby (Junior Girls 200m), who I have never seen before. Vicky Wester and Shane Smith were expected to line up in Senior 400m races, but did not. I think it was a pb for both Titi and Vicky (both National qualifying standards) as both seemed delighted with their performances. McLeod is running 3000m in English Schools Champs. Sam Crowe built up early lead but "blew up" in final 2 laps.
Burns (some of timekeeper Colin) was 1 cm off record (I think by John Wallace). Flannery now unofficially leads the British rankings and according to Bill McGuirk, the region provides the top four in the country (add in no particular order, Crawford-Glanville, Robson and Pope).
This event always produces some good young Hurdlers, but very few are seen in club competition.

Durham Schools Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sat. 14th June.
At Saturday's Durham Schools Championships, 2002 National Junior 400m champion, Lewis Robson from Washington, turned his talents to the 400m Hurdles and comfortably won the Intermediate event, breaking the championship record. Another National champion from 2002, Graham Jackson (Durham Central), moved up an age-group to win the Senior Triple Jump. Chris Parr (South Tyneside), second in the 2002 National Senior 3000m, won the corresponding title here and also took the 1500m.

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Brian Kirkley a day later, but due to time factor only a limited number of results were sent. Apologies to Rachel Abbs as I omitted her winning Long Jump (Inter Girls) of 5.47m. Also to Emma Foster in winning Senior Girls Hammer (34.08). Also not 100% sure of records/athletes' regions, as A Smith is in fact West Wearside.. Apparently there was a dispute over result of Inter Boys 100m. R Balding thought D Cudlip won as did coach Eric Smart ! A strong following wind made sprint times fast, which means the county has more than the required number of qualifiers for National event. Apparently Chris Parr (already qualified in 3000m), must get another mark in Inter County event. No further comment. Good run from Samantha Coleby, who was just outside record.

Track and Field Sports North Eastern Athletics League.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Wed. 11th June.
Mark Christie bettered his previous best figures by 16cm when winning the Pole Vault at the third meeting. In the almost perfect conditions, Christie's performance put him at the time, to the top of the British Junior rankings. Ian Dodsworth in 2nd place was another to take full advantage and set a new personal best. Adam Rogers won a highly competitive 400m from 800m specialist Gavin Massingham. Mark Hood, only 2 days after finishing 10th in the Blaydon race, set new figures when leading all the way in the 3000m. International Heptathlete, Kimberley Goodhall from Guernsey, a student at Durham University, won the 400m and Long Jump.

Additional Comments: This is Athletics Weekly report/results as Bill McGuirk, got in first with results in Chronicle the following night. According to GP Gateshead's points score on the night of 122.5 was a league record. Unofficial best performers were Mark Christie (if not eligible then Kieran Flannery), and Alex Penn. Shortage of field officials for 2nd successive meeting. Not sure why the 1500m Steeplechase is included for Senior Men (won by Sean Kirtley in 5:03.7). Nice to see Carly Jones gradually returning to form.

Nike Blaydon Race.
Newcastle to Blaydon. Mon 9th June.
Tesfaye Eticha and Yelena Burykina were successful in the 23rd running of this popular event. Over 3500 competitors lined the road near Balmbras in Newcastle centre, to follow the traditional route of the Blaydon races anthem, along Scotswood Road, over the River Tyne and into Blaydon shopping centre. Conditions were the best for some time, with little wind and no rain.
Eticha, an Ethiopian, now living in Switzerland, was content to head the field in the early stages along with Julius Kibet, Sammy Malakwen and Michael Openshaw. The winner of the Zurich Marathon, made his break for victory with 2M remaining, and although his pursuers tried to close the gap, there was still a comfortable margin of victory of 4secs at the finish line. Kibet took second place ahead of Ian Hudspith. "I decided to go for it after 3.5M and I was confident I could hang on for victory" stated Eticha. Hudspith in third place won a £500 prize for being the leading North East based finisher. He also led Morpeth to victory in the team event. Brian Rushworth, who has won this event on 3 occasions, this time took the Veterans' prize comfortably defeating defending champion, Rob Hand. An excellent run from Ryan McLeod in 19th place, was expected to secure the defending champion, the Junior title. However, this honour went to 8th placed Kenyan Wilfred Taragon, who at 18 is a year younger than his rival. Ryan's father, Mike, who has won the race seven times including the the inaugural race in 1983, made a welcome return to competition to finish in 104th posittion.
Burykina, the defending champion, broke her year-old course record by 16secs, finishing in 20th place overall. The post graduate student, dropped her nearest rivals Miriam Wangari and Catherine Mutwa at the 4M point. Burykina, who less than 48 hours earlier, had been competing in Moscow, said "I love it in the North East and I wasn't going to miss this, for the world. I hope to return here for the Great North Run" (she acted as an early pacemaker for Sonia O'Sullivan in 2002). Dianne Henaghan was the leading veteran, in 6th place, taking 11secs off Trudi Thomson's 3-year-old course record. Like Hudspith, she also won the bonus for being the first local athlete. Close behind Henaghan was former International and 4-times-winner Jill Boltz of the host club, now limited to her competitive outings, as she runs Fitness Centre. Among the category winners was Val Hancock, who two days earlier had set a British record for the W60 5000m, at the British Masters Championships, at Derby.

Additional Comments: This is AW copy as Simon Rushworth covered it for Journal. 3541 finishers. A bad error by myself (pointed out by WM) saying that R McLeod was 19th instead of 12th. Not sure how thatr happened. Warm and sunny, but uncomfortable running for some in the heat. Best conditions (for years) for spectators. I understand all the queries against the unattached women have all been cleared up. Original results showed a dodgy first W40 and W50 and a M70, who would have easily topped the World rankings (33mins+). Apparently D Best was having her first race, and is set to join Blaydon. Chester Le Street were originally first Womens' team, but Alyson Dixon does not count yet. Not even sure about Dawn Elliott ? Claire Smallwood sustained an injury with 1.5M remaining, and now has her leg bandaged. She is likely to be sidelined for a month. Enjoyed occasion but it is very difficult to cover as the initial results on the night (courtesy of Joe Lee) are subject to a lot of scrutiny. R McLeod turned 19, two day earlier. His father was entered as M50 but was not categorised in results. Ted Joynson finished in 3515th position in 77:11, though he was given 77:17 in results. It looks as though he may have covered the full distance this time !
Not sure I agree that former club athletes, should win unattached prizes.
Former Heaton Harrier Sean Kelly, now with Wallsend, finished 107th (in a distressed state) in 33:47. Gary Campbell was 1st official counter (248th in 34:25). Further Heaton placings: 286 Ian Legge 36:57; 288 Steve Lancaster 36:59; 302 Ted Baty 37:16; 392 Jo Smith; 416 Chris Brown 38:56; 450 John Marshall 39:23; 516 Allen Mulliss 40:03; 532 Scott McEntee 40:14; 671 John Josephs 41:26; 707 Ruth Sills 41:35 (85L); 721 Pauleen Leslie (89L); 723 Chris Ward 41:55; 742 Eric Appleby; 747 Jeff Wilson 42:03; 838 Shirley Atkinson 42:51 (112L); 883 Jo Parkinson 43:15 (117L); 888 Helen Mitford (118L); 1039 Marg Finn 44:26 (143L); 1070 Denis Young 44:40; 1191 Joe Lancaster 45:42 (4th M65); 1312 C Graham 46:30 (203L); 1404 Trevor Hopkins 47:11; 1900 Kate Forsyth 50:35 (371L); 2015 George Routledge 51:20; 2164 Harry Craven 52:35 (4th M70); 2322 Michelle Landells 53:33  Other "dodgy" placings: 2259 Ruth Sills (again) 53:09; 3008 Ann Grenfell 59:45; 3192 Vaughan Lewis 62:52..Not sure of team placings, as only leading results listed.

Ben Geddes gained a sprint double and reigning English Schools Intermediate champion, Graham Jackson won the Triple Jump. Additional Comments: All info used. Division 2 and 3 Mens' scores from Andy Ward. Proper score for Division 3 is 1 Seaton 326; 2 Hartlepool Burn Road 290; 3 Richmond and Zetland 287; 4 Houghton and Peterlee 243; 5 Tyneside Composite 223; 6 Morpeth B 180; 7 Birtley 119 (I misread previous match result). I gather Morpeth A team were calling up B team members, at last minute, which did not please MG. I understand wind at Carlisle was generous. Weather at Jarrow was fine early on but heavy rain (torrential later) in final half hour. Oliver Wickham returned to action finishing 6th in Steeplechase (10:52.3). Very poor turn-out in Womens' match. Had not seen some of Gateshead team at all, including one who collapsed in 400m (there was no first aid booked for meeting).

Additional Comments: Info from AW. Archie Jenkins had busy time (he ran next day at Blaydon). Did not know about Phil Jones medal until Margaret Watson told me. Difficult to pick out results with only Veterans clubs (associations) designated. I think there must have been no competitors (unless they dropped out) in M70 10000m. Suspected Smith was better at 100m.

Additional Comments: All info used. An enjoyable day. Timetable fell behind soon after start, due to non-cooperation with groundsmen, regarding moving/changing Hurdles heights etc. At most this was 1hr 10mins behind, but time was made up through some events, with scheduled heats, being run as straight finals, and combining some 5000m races. The last event started 5mins early. Weather was bright and sunny, but there was a cool breeze, which affected track performances. Eric was lucky that Pascal Morris did not run, but he was untroubled in winning. Reg was 4th in M65 1500m (5:59.63). Archie Jenkins was beaten by two M55 runners in 5000m. One was Charlie Dickinson of Belgrave, who also won 1500m. After advising Kevin Carr of Bob Laidler's performances, Denis Field was contacted, but Denis maintains that these were not British records (they were according to the programme/results). Rob Hand was expected to run 5000m but did not turn up. Jim Caddy went to wrong place to report for 5000m start and missed race. Day 2 info to follow, along with Hammer results. These were unavailable on day, as event was still in progress on outside field, when most people were leaving.

Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 2nd June.
Chris Lamb of Chester Le Street clocked the fastest time at last night's second race, in the Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap series. Lamb, who was also fastest in the previous race, was giving up to 21:20 to the rest of his rivals, and finished in 28th place overall. It was very close in the Womens' contest, with only 1 sec separating the fastest three athletes. Sharing the quickest time were Kathryn Waugh of Chester Le Street, returning to competition after injury, and Northumbria University student, Rebecca Robinson of Kendal, the North of England Junior Cross Country silver medallist.
Result. Distance 5.5km.
1 D Frazer (unatt) 26:20; 2 S Wills (unatt) 27:09; 3 D Tait (Salt) 27:53; 4 B Kemp (unatt) 28:10; 5 T Danby (North U) 28:17; 6 P George (Conc) 28:22
Fastest Times: 1 C Lamb (CleS, U20) 17:17; 2 P Johnson (Morp, M40) 18:08; 3 B Simpson (NSP) 18:22; 4 R Stephenson (NSP, U17) 18:27   Women: 1= K Waugh (CleS) & R Robinson (Kend, U20) 20:31; 3 H Wootton (North U) 20:32; 4 J Nutt (Els) 21:03
(Newcastle Journal: Tues. 3rd June 2003).

Additional Comments: Not used, probably because I forgot to reserve space. Will resubmit results for next Monday (9th). Very humid. 105 finishers (2 dropped out). Winner was off -9mins, which was obviously too generous, as was David Tait's -5mins. Robinson was off 9:30, Waugh 9:40 and Wootton 9:50. Lamb was actually off 12:20, Johnson and Stephenson off 11:40. Brad Simpson (16th) was making another comeback, but is a good job he was not given the handicap on what he claimed, was his fitness (he went off 10:50). In attendance, were Jimmy Hedley + training group (not competing). Claire was very depondent after 3000m at Manchester. Also present were Andrea Banner and Terry Lomax, who was acting as marshal. Ms Wootton (Hannah) is not related to Katrina, but it is not a common name in athletics. She is a 36mins 10km runner (later found out she is 23 and. an Orienteering International). To be honest, I have never seen so many attractive young ladies, at one of these handicaps. Another poor run from Nathan Shrubb, who was third last (19:47). Other fastest times were John Bell (18:52) and Phil Walker (19:01). Andrew Lawrence clocked 19:18, while Phil Lancaster recorded 20:24. Next best lady was Sally Youden (23:22), from the fastest veteran, H Lambert (now unattached) 23:43. Heaton competitors were: 12 Howard Gold 22:41; 15 Ian Legge 21:48; 22 Ted Baty 22:17; 23 Allen Mulliss 23:48; 29 Malcolm Gibson 23:58; 83 Pam Gold 28:04 and 104 Harry Craven 31:53

Weekly Round-up
(to June 1st).
Gateshead easily won their third National Young Athletes League fixture, at Wakefield. Among the Gateshead winners were Kieran Flannery (4:29.3 1500St and 57.5 400H), James Sinclair (23.3 200 and 51.64 Javelin), at Under 15 level, Adam Dalby (55.9 in 400) and Lauren Arthur (13.0 100 and 26.4 200). Middlesbrough-Mandale were third in their fixture at Leeds.
Peter Gordon won the Discus at the Bedford International Games with 51.73. Sorry, but should a M50 gain victory, in what is supposed to be a high profile event ? Emma Morris was 3rd in the High Jump (1.70).
At the Scottish Master Championships at Pitreavie, Eric Smart won the M45 100 (11.69) and 200 (23.56). At the same venue, Steph Lamb won the Scottish Under 15 Pentathlon Championship uith 2903 pts. Her marks were 4.85, 12.51, 9.81, 1.51 and 2:36.23.
Darren Bilton (Leeds C) won the Thirsk 10M in 51:48 from leading veteran John Hunter (54:01). Mike Walker won the M55 section (64:17). Times would suggest that the heat took its toll. Martin Scaife won the Nike Sale 5M in 23:51.
Alisdair Tatham (36:05) won the Hamsterley Forest 10km from leading veteran Malcolm Ingram 37:47) and Andrew Henderson (37:50). Dawn Richardson won Womens' race (40:55). If times seem slow, this is an extremely tough course.
Going to the grassroots level, Karenisa Bekele (26:53.70) defeated Heile Gebresolassie (26:54.58) in the 10000m at Hengalo.
All info from AW and all events on 31st May or 1st June.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 2nd June 2003).

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Morpeth H. Only third competition in new League structure, so record a bit weak yet. As I have stated before unless the four strongest teams are on show, there will be many gaps in programme. NSP sprinter Jenny Graham new name to me. Gina Rutherford also won 800m, but in slow time. Nathan Shrubb nearly refused jump before water on lap 2, but recovered. However, his form is patchy at present.

Low Fell Gateshead 10km Road Race.
Sun. 1st June.
Mark Hudspith warmed up for next Monday's Blaydon race, with victory in yesterday's Gateshead 10km Road Race, at Team Valley. The Morpeth Harrier, whose previous outing was in the National 12 Stage Relay in April, soon headed the field, holding a 3sec lead at 1M (4:58). At 2M (9:59), the advantage was extended to 13secs. With the hot conditions taking their toll on most of his pursuers, Hudspith's lead had extended to 58secs after the 3 laps had been completed. Hudspith's time bettered Tim Field's 2-year-old course record by a massive 65secs. Also inside the old figures was Durham University student, James Walsh who finished in an isolated second place, having broken away from his rivals on the second circuit. Simon O'Donnell of Chester Le Street got the better of 2002 winner and leading veteran, Rob Hand of Durham to take third place. Susanne Morton of Elswick won the Womens' race, from clubmate Yvonne Swinhoe with Jane Heatherington finishing third.
Result.
1 M Hudspith (Morp) 31:21 (CR); 2 J Walsh (Dur U) 32:19; 3 S O'Donnell (CleS) 33:04; 4 R Hand (Dur, M40) 33:16; 5 M Donkin (Sun) 33:46; 6 S Potts (Sun) 33:54; 7 R Walker (NSP) 34:06; 8 M Slesser (J&H) 34:15; 9 P Besford (Gate) 34:29; 10 T Field (Sun) 34:51; 11 T Bush (Dur U) 34:56; 12 P Sanger (Dur U) 35:05  Further Veterans: M45 - 1 T Power (J&H) 36:26; 2 P Morgan (SSh) 37:05  M50 - R Mowbray (Walls) 41:09  M55 - B Hume (Low F) 41:47  M60 - R Moore (Tyne) 43:38  M65 - B Cordes (Morp) 43:40
Women: 1 S Morton (Els) 42:54; 2 Y Swinhoe (Els, W45) 43:23; 3 J Heatherington (unatt) 45:07; 4 J Abbott (Dur U) 48:44; 5 P Gold (Heat, W55) 49:57
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 2nd June 2003).

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Low Fell computer man. 72 finishers which was disappointing. Very oppresive. Breeze in open parts but mainly very humid conditions. No water station which did not help. runners. Walsh was running alongside O'Donnell and Hand after lap 1. Tim Field (watched by Denis), dropped back quickly in later stages. Watching race were two names from the past, Paul Cuskin and Colin Henzell. Not sure if there was team race, but Sunderland would have won. Ted Joynson, who should have started 30mins early, arrived about 10mins before start, and started well down road (300m approx). Half of field had caught him after 1 lap and everyone (including GR), by 2 laps had been completed. His approximate time was 85mins. David Tait was also in action (69th in 61:42). I gather that Alan Elders was going to give prizes to last 5 runners, which meant that GR, DT and EJ were due something. Heaton fielded 8 athletes: 31 Steve Lancaster 42:25; 37 Howard Gold 43:26; 45 Allen Mulliss 45:01; 48 Colin McEntee 46:15; 49 John Josephs 46:44; 59 Scott McEntee 49:42; 61 Pam Gold and 68 George Routledge 60:27.
