News of Murray courtesy of Bill McGuirk, hotfoot from Cleckheaton.  This was double header, which fell behind timetable early on. Recovered as there was only one 3000m (3 Girls). 28th Northumberland Coastal Run.
Beadnell to Alnmouth. Sun. 15th July.
Alnwick Harrier David Kirkland was a popular winner of his own club's 28th Northumberland Coastal Run, yesterday. Conditions were bright and warm for the 800 competitors, who set out on the 14M route from Beadnell Harbour to Alnmouth Estuary.
Kirkland waited until the closing stages, before dropping his nearest rival, new Morpeth recruit Lewis Timmins opening up a 40m lead at RAF Boulmer (12M).
The advantage was extended to over a minute at the finishing line, while third place went to the leading veteran, Phil Walker of Blaydon.
Amy Green of Keighley, also successful in 2004, easily won the Womens' race from Darlington's Susie Rutherford. Nicola May of Carnegie finished 3rd.

Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Alexander Park, Birmingham.  Fri/Sat. 13th/14th July.
The region's athletes had arguably one of their largest medal hauls, at this year's Sainsbury's 77th English Schools Track and Field Championships at Alexander Park, Birmingham.
There were contrasting conditions, with driving rain throughout on Friday, but bright sunshine with a slight breeze on Saturday.
Northumberland took four gold medals in the space of  3 hours  on Saturday afternoon.
Rebecca Liddell (Royal Grammar, Newcastle) easily won the Junior Girls' 75m Hurdles clocking personal best times in the heat (11.28) and final. Niall Flannery also from Royal Grammar, had to work harder than expected, to take the Intermediate 400m Hurdles title. Ross Murray (St Thomas More, Tynemouth), proved too strong for the oppositon on the final lap to win the Intermediate 1500m. Laura Weightman (Duchess School, Alnwick) then took the equivalent Girls title pulling away from her great rival Kate Avery of Durham in the final 100m, both athletes clocking personal best times..
Durham gained three gold medals including two in Relays.
Samantha Coleby (Framwellgate Moor) came with a late run, to overhaul long time leader Rose Reynolds of Berkshire, who misjudged the final Hurdle.
Coleby, in her first season in the event, shaved over half-a-second off her previous best time, set when winning the Northern championship.
The Durham squad of Vicki Holmes, Lauren Arthur, Lorna McMichael and Rebekka Wilmshurst easily won the Senior Relay. They also won the Intermediate Relay thanks to Kate Blaylock, Nicola Pearson, Laura Welsh and a tremendous final leg from Faye Bowles.
Cleveland's Richard Kilty, Intermediate champion in 2006, easily won the Senior 100m.
He also anchored his county to third place in the Relay.
Andrew Stanton of Durham gained a well deserved silver medal in the Senior 800m clocking just inside his personal best time.
Northumberland picked up another three bronze medals, through Gina Rutherford (Senior 800m also a personal best), Lauren Dewdney (Senior 100m Hurdles) and Sally Scott (Intermediate Pole Vault).
Cumbria took two silver medals through Sam Coe in the Senior Hammer and Fell Running specialist Laura Park in the Intermediate 3000m.
There were also bronze medals gained on Friday, from Durham's Melissa Carr (Senior Triple Jump), Katy Wilson (Senior Hammer) and Chloe Gill (Intermediate Triple Jump) and Northumberland's Tim Parkin (Intermediate Pole Vault).
Gill, who jumped a personal best distance, along with Weightman and Avery will represent England in this weekend's International event at Newport.

Enclosed e-mail sent to Journal editor on 14th July:
Just to mention two snippets which appeared in "Shorts" this week. They were probably sent by a coach or friend.
An article on Wednesday said two Gateshead Harriers Melissa Carr and Sally Scott would  be competing in English Schools Championships.
a: Carr's first claim club is Shildon
b: Gateshead Harriers provided at least 20 competitors for either Northumberland, Durham or Cleveland. They gained four gold medals, Richard Kilty, Niall Flannery, Ross Murray and Rebecca Liddell and from Relay teams, Nicola Pearson, Laura Welsh, Vicki Holmes and Lauren Arthur. There were also some minor medallists.
Secondly an article yesterday said Gateshead's Katy Wilson gained a bronze medal. Wilson's first claim club is Birtley and there were actually 4 bronze medallists.

Veterans A.A - North East Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sat. 6th July.
The windy conditions affected performances at Saturday's Veterans A.A - North East Championships at Jarrow. Not surprisingly most of the records set were in the Field events. Les Atkinson of Morpeth, however bettered the old figures in the Over 50 1500m by 1sec.
John Wild of Richmond and Zetland set new records in the Over 55 Discus, Hammer and Weight Throw. Terry Hudson of Jarrow and Hebburn bettered the old figures in the Over 60 Shot and Hammer. Though restricted to competing in three events, Sunderland's Denis Field improved his own figures in the Over 75 Discus.
Dave Dixon of Tynedale set a new record in the Over 45 Triple Jump.
Arguably the best performances of the day came from Tynedale's Steph White who won the Over 45 400m, 300m Hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump.
David Butler of Jarrow and Hebburn also won four titles, in the Over 65 100m, 200m, High Jump and Long Jump.

George pulled out of 800m with half a lap remaining with slight injury. A pw for Eric A (?). Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. Bright and dry but humid evening (nb. Heavy rain in Ashington). 575 finishers (last time: 72:26). Thanks to the Binghams for excellent result service. Paper version + e-mail later on same evening.  Stewy Bell led by 25m at 1M, was caught by Brown at 2M, but kicked away again almost immediately. In an interesting  battle down the field,  George Routledge (417th in 52:40) came home well clear of Dave Whitmore (428th in 53:30). A weakened Heaton Womens' team finished 7th. Full results on Tynedale H website with Heaton details on HH website.
