National Junior League.
Northern Premier Division. Gateshead
International Stadium.
Sun. 26th July.
Gateshead Harriers finished 4th in the
final National Junior League fixture at the International Stadium,
yesterday. They finished fifth overall behind Team Glasgow and maintain
their Premier Division status.
The Glasgow squad proved too strong
for their rivals on the day, finishing 58pts ahead of Sale, Manchester.
A depleted Gateshead team provided
only two winners. English Schools silver medallist Emma Pringle won the
Triple Jump. The jumps unlike the majority of the track events, were
assisted by the prevailing strong wind. Pringle also took third in the
Long Jump and was second in the Shot behind English Schools' champion,
Hannah Evenden of Edinburgh.
For good measure Emma's sister Hannah
won the B Triple Jump. Jayne Hansom had to settle for a joint victory
in the High Jump with Glasgow's Kirsty Barr.
English Schools bronze medallist Guy
Learmouth who competes for Northumberland, won the 800m in the Team
Edinburgh colours. Another County Schools representative, Andrew
Crichton, also Team Edinburgh, won the B 3000m.

30th Northumberland Coastal Run.
Beadnell to Alnmouth. Sun. 12th July.
Alnwick's David Kirkland repeated his 2007 victory in yesterday's
30th Northumberland Coastal Run from Beadnell to
Alnmouth.
Krkland soon headed the 1100-strong field, and was joined by 2004
winner, Ray Ward from Edinburgh. The pair were locked together until
Kirkland made his bid for victory in the final mile.
A strong headwind affected competitors in the closing stages along
Alnmouth beach, as Kirkland edged to a 4secs victory over his rival.
James Bulman of North Yorks Moors finished in an isolated third
position ahead of clubmate Paul Lowe who claimed the first veterans'
prize.
The Cleveland club also took the team title.
Havering's Debbie Appleton improved on last year's second placing,
to win the Womens' race.
Amy Green of Keighley, winner in 2007 and third last year, took
second place ahead of Gateshead's Kim Simpson.

English Schools Track and Field
Championships.
Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield. Fri/Sat/ 10th/11th July.
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for North East athletes at the
English Schools Track and Field Championships at Don Valley Stadium,
Sheffield.
Northumberland gained the region's only two gold medals on
Saturday, with Niall Flannery (Newcastle Royal Grammar) and Laura
Weightman (Newcastle College) retaining their titles in the Senior 400m
Hurdles and Senior Girls' 1500m respectively. In fact it was a third
successive title for the pair who also won at Intermediate level 2
years ago.
Despite not winning titles, other medallists had the satisfaction
of achieving personal best performances.
Emma Pringle (Duchess High) took silver in the Senior Girls'
Triple Jump adding 13cms to her previous best figures.
Scottish based Guy Learmouth, who attends School in
Northumberland, finished 3rd in the Senior 800m taking nearly a second
off his
previous best time.
Tyne Breen (Whickham Comp) took 3rd in the Senior Girls' Shot for
Durham, adding over a metre on to her old figures.
For Cleveland, Jessica Russon ran a brave race to finish second to
Hampshire's Charlotte Purdue in the Senior Girls' 3000m.
Russon was also 5secs quicker than she has ran before..
Ashleigh Wood also set a legal best time finishing 2nd in the
Senior Girls' 100m Hurdles.
She had previously won her heat with a wind assisted best
performance.
Cumbria gained third in the Inter Girls' Hammer with Katy Barnard
throwing 1metre further than before.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. These
courtesy of the Binghams. 595 finishers (last time: Harry Craven
77:06). Very
hot but light rain throughout race. Fared up after last runner was in.
Other Mens' Team results: 4 Elswick 78; 5 Low Fell 81; 6 Heaton 102.
David Whitmore finished in 424th position. Patrick Kelly finished 507th
(58:12). Overall a poor turn-out from HH in what is usually one of
their best supported races.
