British Athletics League Cup Semi Final.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sat. 19th July.
Gateshead Harriers comfortably qualified for the final of the British Athletics League Cup Final winning Saturday's Semi-Final at the International Stadium. Gateshead now travel to Bedford for the Final in September.
Gateshead won ten of the eleven events contested. Richard Kilty team captain for the Great Britain squad that travelled to the recent World Junior Championships, shaved a hundredth-of-a-second off his personal best time, winning the 100m in a legal 10.60secs.
Andrew Sturrock (110m Hurdles and 200m), Lewis Robson (400m), Andrew Wiles (1500m), John Stacey (Long Jump), Gavin Howard (Pole Vault), Andrew Smith (Hammer) and Ian Burns (Javelin) were also successful in their events.
Gateshead's Women team could not match the strength of  City of Edinburgh, from the Premier Division.
Lauren Dewdney, who took the English Schools' title on the same track 7days earlier, easily won the 100m Hurdles. Leah Weatheritt also gained victory in the Hammer.

Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships
.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 12th July.
Northumberland athletes, after an indifferent start, had a very successful time on the second day of the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium. The county took four gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
Laura Weightman (Duchess High School, Alnwick) started the run, with an excellent tactical victory in the Senior Girls' 1500m, proving too strong for her rivals in the final 80m.
Niall Flannery (Royal Grammar), like Weightman the Intermediate champion from 2007, took the Senior Boys' 400m Hurdles title.
Flannery's time of 52.48secs was a personal best time, fractionally quicker than he set in the heats of the recent England Athletics Under 20 Championships.
Tim Parkin (Ponteland High School) was the next to take gold, clearing a personal best height (by 1cm) of 4.40m in the Intermediate Boys' Pole Vault.
Lauren Dewdney (Central High) improved on her bronze medal in 2007, by winning the Senior Girls' 100m Hurdles title.
Dewdney's time of 14.01secs was fractionally quicker than her personal best set in Friday's heat, but on this occasion was assisted by a wind speed above the legal limit.
Ross Murray (St Thomas More, North Shields) last year's Intermediate champion, took second place in the Senior 1500m, a position matched by Stacey Smith (Prudhoe High School) in the Senior Girls' 800m. Smith had also taken the silver in the Intermediate race at the same venue, two years ago.
Rebecca Liddell (Central High) took bronze in the Junior Girls' 80m Hurdles. The Junior champion from 2007, clocked 11.32secs a personal best but like Dewdney, she was assisted by an illegal following wind..
Cleveland gained one gold medal, when Kayleigh Mills from Hartlepool, was successful in the Intermediate Girls' Hammer, throwing a personal best distance of 46.75m.
Laura Park of Cumbria, one of the country's leading Cross Country runners, took her first track title, when winning the Intermediate Girls' 3000m. Park, this time was prepared to wait until the final 3 laps, before easily pulling away from her nearest challengers.
Park, Mills and Parkin will represent England at this weekend's International Match at Bedford.
Durham's best performance came in the 4x100m Relay, with the Senior Girls' team of Vicky Holmes, Amy Fleming, Samantha Coleby and Nicola Pearson, finishing 4th..

Additional Comments: Not used. Resubmitted (results only) for 14th July. Weather bright dry, and quite warm in sheltered parts. Problems with results on night, which meant I had to hold over coverage. 164 finishers (last time: 41:29). Probably about 10 incorrect names in results, but I think these listed here are correct. Best quality in race for many years, but number of runners down.

Sainsbury's English Schools Cup Final.
Costello Stadium, Hull.  Sat. 5th July.
North East teams found the Southern opposition too strong at Saturday's final of the Sainsbury's English Schools Cup at Costello Stadium, Hull.
Best performance came from Park View School in Chester Le Street, who finished in 7th place. The Durham squad were the strongest team in the track events, leading at halfway, but struggled in the later Field events.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Full results courtesy of ESAA website (and Simon Leonard). Weather wet for first two hours, sunny next 2 hours, heavy rain, thunder and lightning for next half hour and then sunny again. Unlike regional round when there are A and B events, it seems that there is a random draw for heats in the Final. Consiquently it is difficult to pinpoint where competitors were actually placed in each event. Steph Loraine finished 2nd in C race and was I think third fastest. As usual she held a large lead at the bell and was only caught in final 30m. Disappointingly Rebecca Liddell did not run in 80m Hurdles as the record (12secs) was at her mercy. The A race winner clocked 11.9secs.

Additional Coments: Only results sent due to time lapse. Results courtesy of Hugh & Steph Bingham. Weather dry, overcast but very warm. Not good conditions for a race futher than 3km (nb. Rob Hand finished 230th in 45:04). 633 finishers (a record) (last time: =71:42). 600 advance entries + 150 approx on night. A good quality Womens' race. Heaton finished 5th team (84pts) (Elswick 4th with 74). Heaton H performances on HH website..
