National Young Athletes League.
Sun. 31st July.
Middlesbrough-Mandale won the final National Junior League Northern
Division 1 fixture at Chester Le Street yesterday.
Middlesbrough just missed promotion to the Premier Division finishing
3rd overall.
The Teessiders were helped by treble victories from newcomer Liam McDonald
(Under 17 Jumps) and Joe Corrigan (Under 15 Long Jump and Hurdles and B
100m). Ben Patterson gained a double victory in the Under 15 100m and 200m
and Adam Allison was successful in the Under 17 100m and 400m.
A good overall team performance saw Chester Le Street provide a strong
challenge to finish 2nd. Daniel Brown provided useful points to win the
Under 15 B 200m and Hurdles.
Host club Birtley finished 3rd which was enough to secure their Division
1 status. Apart from their usual haul of points from Rebecca Pottinger,
Kate Wilson, Steph Hopkinson and Steph Loraine, they also provided the
best performer when Kate Fanning won the Under 13 Hurdles, as well as gaining
victory in the High Jump.

Weather at Chester Le Street was bright and sunny.Getting warmer after
cool start to meeting. Impressed with the home club, who now seemed to
be growing in stature at "grass routes" level.

246 finishers which is record for this course. Last time by Sid Robson
was 30mins 25secs. Alyson Dixon's time bettered her old figures by 1sec.
"Our Tim" dropped out with slight injury. Did not see Andrew Dougall finish,
either. The incorporated Veterans A.A - North East Championships proved
a bit trying, as only about 1 in 5 of veterans entered, qualified. Other

North Eastern Counties A.A. Relay Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Tues. 19th July.
The cooler blustery conditions meant the Senior records remained intact,
despite some strong performances. The Gosforth quartet of Paul Hutton (2:01.9),
Lewis Timmins (1:59.2), Drew Graham (1:57.1) and Matthew Nicholson (1:54.5)
were 5secs outside the old figures, in the opening event, the 4 x 800.
A Gateshead U20 squad of Ben Walpole (51.4) Tom Patton (50.7), Craig Crawford
Glanville (50.3) and English Schools 800m champion, Kieran Flannery (49.1),
were only a second outside the 4x 400 record.
Gateshead's U13 Girls' quartet squad of Rebecca Liddell, Jessica Read,
Rebecca Pow and Sigourney Bell took 1.1secs off the old figures in the
4 x 100.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. This
is AW report. Weather had turned cool and breezy after a hot spell. Not
a good entry. Best field: 7 (U15G). Disappointed at lack of Senior Womens'
teams (notably Gateshead). Sunderland with Lisa Cowell on leg 4, should
have won U17 Relay, but there was an appalling final takeover.
Other teams included: SM: 4 x 100: Gateshead (S Horsborough, C Crawford
Glanville, R Linnett, M Suggett). U17 4 x 400: Gateshead (M Donnelly
53.0, G Docherty 50.4, M Docherty 50.6, A Dalby 51.8). U15 4 x 400: Gateshead
(D Hall 55.9, R Kaufman 58.0, B Smith 54.0, D Leadbitter 55.8). Gavin Massingham
clocked 49.2 secs running second leg for incomplete Sunderland team:
U15G: Gateshead (L Welsh leg 2, N Pearson leg 4). North Shields Poly (anchored
by Max Mullins) crossed line first in U17 4 x 100 (46.6) but were disqualified.
Record for U13G event was set in 1996.

British Masters Track and Field Championships.
Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Day 1. Sat. 16th July.
It was the opening event, the 1500m where North East competitors gained
gold medals on the first day of the British Masters Track and Field Championships,
at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Kath Stewart of North Shields Poly smashed
the championship record to win the Over 65 Womens' race. Darlington's Ian
Barnes won the Over 70 category and Jim Caddy of Middlesbrough took the
Over 80 title. Barnes and Caddy later took silver medals in the 5000m.
Steve Smith of Gateshead, the 2003 Over 40 champion finished second in
the Over 45 100m. Archie Jenkins of Morpeth took silver in the Over 50
5000m and Lynne Marr of Tynedale finished 2nd in the Over 40 5000m. Bob
Laidler of Sunderand took second place in the Over 75 Discus and Javelin.
Gateshead's Helen Patton finished strongly to finish third in the Over
45 400m. Tim Field of Sunderland overcame the hot conditions to finish
3rd in the Over 40 5000m, while father Denis, nearly 75, gained bronze
in the Over 70 Discus and Javelin.

Additional Comments: All info used. Overcast early on but got sunny
and much warmer as day progressed. Results courtesy of Ian Thomas. Apologies
but areas of some winners may not be accurate. Not 100% sure of Masters'
abbreviations (eg Scot and South). Hot for "Our Tim's" race. He got
pulled away by early leader but eased off to let gold and silver medallist
pass. Early leader dropped out after six laps, leaving Tim in isolated
third. He caught "second" with 3 laps remaining but faded again. Not a
good day for Denis who was at least 5m down on usual distances. Patton
had a sluggish start but finished very strongly. If 11 or less entries
turned up there were A and B finals. Lynne Marr's result not displayed,
which is why I do not know winner ? Old records for W65 800m and
1500m were 2:57.97 and 6:21.06. Day 2 performances were rang up and will
appear in "Weekly Round-up".

Heaton Harriers Women Only Dene Run.
Mon. 11th July.
Morpeth Harrier Aiveen Fox repeated her 2004 victory, to easily win
last night's Heaton Harriers Women Only Dene Run. The Durham University
student, the current North of England Junior Cross Country champion, led
from the start in the hot conditions, missing the 2002 course record by
7secs. Clubmate Jane Mooney took second place, with Sian Ellison, second
in 2004, making it a clean sweep for Morpeth in third. Not surprisingly
the Northumberland club retained the team title.
For good measure, former Claremont athlete, Kate Chapman who finished
4th, has now joined Morpeth.
Hilary Ross was the leading veteran in 8th place.
Result. Distance 5.5km.

Beadnell to Alnmouth. Sun. 10th July.
Darren Purvis was a clear winner of yesterday's 26th Northumberland

top veteran, Les Atkinson. Geoff Campbell of host club, Alnwick finished
in 3rd place. 2004 North of England Cross Country champion, Helen Lawrence
of Wirral, easily won the Womens' race finishing 11th overall. Hannah Wootton
of North Shields Poly finished 2nd ahead of previous winner, Judith Nutt

Veterans A.A- North East Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat. 9th July.
Report courtesy of Geoff Wood (via AW). These are best way I could
copy results on to page.

Warm sunny conditions provided the ideal conditions for breaking records at the 2005 track and field championships. On the track, Nadine Garnham set three new records, improving her W55 100 metre record to 16.6 and setting new marks in the 200m and long jump. English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Sat. 9th July.
The North East again came home with medals, at this weekend's English
Schools Track and Field Championships at a warm but quite breezy Alexander
Stadium, Birmingham. There were also golds for neighbouring Cumbria and
North Yorkshire. Northumberland's Kieran Flannery easily won the Senior
800m destroying the opposition with a decisive kick at the 600m point.
Northumberland also took bronze in the Senior Girls' Discus through Lianne
Tucker. However the winner, Gemma Llewellyn of Merseyside had finished
behind Tucker in both the North of England and A.A.A Championships this
season, where Tucker took gold and silver respectively. Northumberland's
surprise medal came in the Inter Boys 4 x 100m Relay, where they finished
third.
Cleveland gained one silver with Ricky Stevenson in the Inter 1500m,
and a bronze through Richard Kilty in the Inter 100m.
A strong Durham Intermediate Girls sprint team, were just edged out
of second place taking the bronze medal. The quartet of Lorna McMichael,
Lisa Cowell, Kineta Kelsall and Rebekah Wilmshurst did survive two dubious
take-overs after leg 1 in both heat and final. It was very much a consolation
for McMichael who had earlier finished 4th in the 300m Hurdles, behind
a British record breaking run of London's Perri Shakes Drayton. The winner
had crossed the finish line first in 2004 also, but was disqualified. McMichael,
who was upgraded to 3rd in 2004, had clocked personal best times in all
three rounds.
Richard Byers of Cumbria took the Junior Boys' High Jump title, bettering
the old record by 3cms.
Richard Buck of North Yorkshire was an easy winner of the Senior 400m,
and team-mate Andrew Lagan, from Northallerton, finished an impressive
2nd in the Intermediate 800m.
Lagan together with Stevenson and Kirsty Hutton of Durham (2nd in the
Intermediate Discus on Friday), will now represent England at the International
match at Tullamoor on Saturday.

Additional Comments: All info used. Excellent meeting as always. Did
not know Northumberland gained bronze in IB 4 x 100 until I saw result
on website (not available at end of meeting). I know Kamara ran leg 4 and
I am sure R Harrison and S Dale would have been on team.
Have to admit I was watching Cleveland rather than Northumberland !
Cleveland team was High Jumper ? (good heat but poor final), Aliu, Allison
and Kilty. Times for Relay heats were IB: Ht 2: 1 North'd 43.35
Ht 3. 1 Cleveland 43.91 IG: Ht 3: 1 Durham 48.47. Cowell was weak
link on Durham Girls' team. Very hot on track, but it got breezy later
on. Times for McMichael (3rd) and Coleby (5th) in semis were 43.65secs
and 44.74secs.
G Clarke was impressive in IB 400m running like Michael Johnson. Disappointed
at non-appearance of Emily Pidgeon (BBC said she had been ill the day after).
Late news: Discovered from Andrea Fyall, Lauren Arthur ran 2nd leg for
Durham. We were unable to find out on day but went by height. Apologies
to her. In overall teams, Cleveland were 2nd in Group 3 IB (behind Warwicks)
and Durham were 4th in Group B IG (behind Cheshire).

English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Alexander Park, Birmingham. Day 1 Fri. 8th July.
Durham's Kirsty Hutton gained the North East's first medal at yesterday's
opening session of the English Schools' Track and Field Championships at
Alexander Park, Birmingham. Hutton took second place in the Intermediate
Girls' Shot behind the record breaking performance of Leicester's Eden
Francis. Cumbria's Sam Coe took third place in the Intermediate Boys' Hammer.
Durham's Tyne Breen finished just outside the medals in the Junior Girls'
Discus.
Northumberland's Kieran Flannery was the fastest qualifier for the
Senior Boys' 800m, while team-mate Ben Green was an impressive winner of
his 800m semi.
Warren Roberts of Durham and Ricky Stevenson comfortably qualified
for the Intermediate Boys' 1500m final, while Durham's Sam Coleby (in a
personal best time of 44.60secs) and Lorna McMichael progressed to the
Intermediate 300m Hurdles semis.
The programme concludes today at 10.00am, with Northumberland's Lianne
Tucker looking for a medal in the opening event, the Senior Girls' Discus.

Sat. 2nd July.
A weakened Gateshead squad finished fourth in the third North of England
League Division 1 match, at Leeds on Saturday. The host club narrowly won
the match and comfortably top the League standings. With one fixture remaining,
Gateshead lie in 4th overall.
Gateshead gained maximum points in the 1500m, with Steven Horn and
Alan Buckley. There were also clean sweeps in the Womens' 200m through
Vicky Carmichael and Shona Burns and Hammer with Lisa-Marie Shippen and
Leah Weatheritt. Ian Burns won the Javelin. Britain's top Shot Putter,
Carl Myerscough set a new league record, when winning his speciality event.
At the Division 2 fixture at York, Nestle Rowntrees came out on top,
and now lead the table. Morpeth finished third overall. Teenager Simon
Dale won the 100m and they gained maximum points in the 5000m through Chris
Sampson and David Swinburne, and the Steeplechase through Swinburne again

B 100m, 200m and helping the 4 x 400m team to victory.
At the Division 3 match at Darlington, Seaton maintained their lead
comfortably winning from Richmond and Zetland. Although sunny and warm,
the wind affected many of the performances. Top performer was Tynedale's
Danny Burns who won the B 100m, High Jump, Long Jump and Javelin and also
helped the sprint Relay team to victory. Birtley teenager, Rebecca Pottinger
was the top female winning the Long Jump, High Jump and sprint Hurdles.

Most of info used. Looked like wind could have been a problem at all
meetings. A.A.A U20/23 Championships affected turn-outs. I understand there
were no batons at York, and used chopped up wood instead. David Walker
won 110m Hurdles (17.6) and P White B 1500m (4:28.9). Not a good quality/turn-out
at Darlington. Nice to see Kelly Rodmell back. Tynedale's sprint Relay
team was Lowden, Burns, Sinclair and Little. 4 x 400m splits were Sinclair
52.6, Dougal 55.1, Lowden 51.6 and Little.50.5.
