Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays.
Race Course, Durham City.  Sun. 18th Jan.
Sunderland Harriers were clear winners of the Senior Mens' race at yesterday's Durham Cathedral Relays at the Race Course.
In the biting cold conditions, Patrick Martin led for the Wearsiders on Leg 1 coming home 9secs ahead of Durham's Dan Garbutt. North Eastern Cross Country champion, Mark Hood extended the advantage on leg 2 to 50secs over 2008 winners, New Marske. Hood's time was identical to that of Martin, the pair clocking the fastest legs of the day.
Gavin Massingham maintained the advantage over New Marske on the final leg, though the region's Junior Cross Country champion, Ricky Stevenson made some inroads on the first of the two laps. Morpeth finished in third place.
Sunderland nearly repeated their victory in the Veterans' race but North Shields Poly's more youthful squad had the edge.
The Poly, winners in 2008, led on leg 1 through Tommy Brannon, with Sunderland lying in 4th place. Brian Rushworth moved the Wearsiders into a 10secs lead on leg 2, with the day's fastest time.
Ian Twaddle of North Shields caught Sunderland's Tom Doughty in the closing stages kicking away from his rival in the final 200m.
Elswick finished in 3rd place.
Chester Le Street easily won the Womens' race. Kathryn Foley (formerly Waugh) led after leg 1 with Melissa Turner and Alyson Dixon extending the advantage to 53secs over Morpeth. Dixon clocked the fastest time. Heaton finished in a creditable third position.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, but distorted editing gave wrong impression of Stevenson' run. Weather bright but very frosty. Thawed slightly later as wind increased. 30 teams finished in SM (last time: 41:41). VM: 40 (45:28) and SW 25 (47:17). Bewick was actually 5th on Leg 1 in Vets race. A lot of errors (partly on my part) in Veterans' results. Amendments: M45: 1 Elswick 32:07 (M Crowe 11:05, P Dixon 10:30, A Thompson 10:32); 2 Sunderland; 3 North Shields Poly 32:38  M65: 1 NE Veterans 42:20 (M Relton 13:11, A Potter 14:57, A Lindsay 14:12); 2 South Shields. A fine run by Heaton SW team (leg positions 7,3,3), with Laura Spence's 26secs lead over Kim Simpson being halved on first lap, but like Stevenson, Simpson ran too hard in early stages. Heaton B splits were R Majumdar 11:47 (9), S Lemon 12:48 (7) and J Archibold 13:56 (8). Veterans splits were: A: 35:30 - L Smith 10:29 (11), C Burn 13:09 (22), M Gibson 11:52 (18) (10th M35 team)  B: 45:08 - S Daley 11:38 (23), E Appleby 15:48 (38), G Routledge 17:42 (39)  (8th M55 team). Only one SM ( I Robinson 19th on leg 1 in 10:24)..

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Results courtesy of Lisa Lumsdon (Durham Schools) via Bill McGuirk. Not enough facilities at Centre on day (to sum up briefly), so results had to be taken away. to be compiled. Weather bright but cold and a little windy. Course quite firm underfoot. A better run from Sarah Crosby (presumably at South Tyneside College).  Gertig moved from 4th to 3rd in latter stages.

North Eastern Counties Indoor Championships.
Gateshead Indoor Performance Centre.  Sat/Sun. 10th/11th Jan.
Five records were set at this weekend's North Eastern Counties Indoor Championships at Gateshead Indoor Centre.
The outstanding performances however, came from other events. On Saturday, Gateshead's Craig Strurrock threw a personal best distance to win the Senior Shot. Yesterday, Junior International Richard Kilty of Gateshead, narrowly missed Jonathan Edward's 1998 record when easily winning the Senior Mens' 60m.
Teesside University student, Adebayo Babatunde of Middlesbrough added 12cms to his own figures in the Senior Mens' Triple Jump.
Gatteshaed's Sam Hall won the Under 15 Boys Hurdles taking 0.19secs off the old record. For good measure Hall also won the 60m.
The three other records came in the Under 13 Girls' age-group. Stephanie Addison of Jarrow & Hebburn won the 60m Hurdles bettering the old figures by 0.16secs. Addison also won a close 60m. Sophie Hindhaugh of Chester Le Street added 35cms to the old record in the Shot. Jarrow's Alex Bainbridge bettered the old figures in the High Jump by 8cms.
Multi Eventer Jayne Hansom of Gateshead (4th in the English Schools Long Jump in 2008), had a good weekend winning the Under 17 High Jump, Long Jump and Hurdles.
Unluckiest athlete was Shildon's Alona Mae Lonsdale, who clocked a faster time than the main final to win the B Under 13 Girls 60m. Lonsdale lost any hope of making the main final when stumbling near the finish, in her heat. Lonsdale had already won the Long Jump, 24 hours earlier.

Additional Comments: Most of info used but in "Sports Shorts". A good meeting but poorly supported by Senior athletes. Apologies to Paul but his surname is spelt Donaghy. Kilty's time (he eased up 5m from finish) was probably a personal best (Confirmed: it was 6.91).. AW Standards are very kind to U13/U15 Girl sprinters, as nearly every entry clocked a quicker time. This would cerrtainly not be the case in Outdoor 100m races. A late amendment was that Da Costa's winning leap in U13 Long Jump was 4.46m. Saturday meeting concluded about 4.30pm and Sunday at 2.00pm.
Thanks to Kevin, Janice and Chris for their efforts.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Farringdon College, Sunderland.  Sat.10th Jan.
Competition intensified after the second fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League at Farringdon, on Saturday. Three teams share the lead in the Mens' Division 1 table and there are joint leaders in the Womens' competition.
Athletes ran on a frozen course in sub-zero temperatures, as Gateshead Junior Tim Calder gained a runaway victory in the Senior Mens' race. Calder led all the way on the three-lap course, coming home with 39secs to spare over Newcastle University student and Middlesbrough Harrier, Andrew Mason. Gateshead's Jonathan Pearson, a student at Oxford took third place ahead of in-form Sunderland Harrier, Brian Bewick, who led the Veterans home. Clubmate Jack Martin was the leading Medium Pack runner in 5th. Chris Sampson of Morpeth clocked the fastest time finishing in 14th place from the fast pack.
Morpeth won the team event and now share the League leadership with Heaton and Wallsend.
Sunderland finished 2nd and now move to 4th overall after an indifferent performance in the opening fixture.Gateshead maintained their 100% record to win Division 2 and Jarrow and Hebburn were successful in Division 3.
In the Senior Womens' race, Loughborough student, Alexandra Snook of Shildon, was a clear winner from the Heaton pair of Laura Spence and Rachel Majumdar.
The Newcastle club, the defending champions, won the team event from Chester Le Street, the pair now holding a joint lead in the table.
Kathryn Foley (formerly Waugh) of Chester Le Street, now a Veteran, clocked the fastest time finishing in 6th place.
Middlesbrough's Kirsty Legg, returning to competition, after a lengthy lay-off through injury, comfortably won the Junior Womens' race from the first Under 17 athlete, Sigourney Bell of Gateshead. Lauren Roche of Gateshead clocked the fastest time finishing in 5th place from the fast pack. The Tyneside club maintained their domination in this age-group, to win the team event.
In the Under 17 Mens' race, Grant Hawkins of Middlesbrough and Gareth Lavan of Chester le Street, had some consolation after going off course, in the opening fixture, by occupying the first two places here.
In the Under 13 Girls' race, Anna Fawcett of Chester Le Street, the North Eastern champion and succesful in the opening fixture from the slow pack, gained victory from the fast pack, passing long-time-leader and clubmate, Tara Eams in the final 50m.
Tristan Peel of Jarrow & Hebburn (Under 15 Boys), Daniel Pickering of Chester Le Street (Under 13 Boys) and Faye Lockhart of Gateshead (Under 15 Girls) won the other races.

Hartlepool Old Monk 6.
Hart Village. Sun. 4th Jan.
Sunderland Harrier, Brian Rushworth gained a hard fought victory in yesterday's Hartlepool Old Monk Multi Terrain race at Hart Village.
A record field of 131 runners took part in the cold but dry conditions.
Rushworth was in the leading group of three along with the Billingham pair of Andy Chadfield and Gary Grounds, approaching the 5M point. However a misplaced sign, sent the trio off course. Rushworth hurredly made up the lost ground passing the then-leader Richard Darling of Nottingham with only 100m remaining.
It was Rushworth's first outing since sustaining an injury in November.
Darling finished in 2nd place ahead of Rushworth's clubmate and fellow veteran, Brian Bewick. Chadfield and Grounds recovered to finish 6th and 10th respectively.
Middlesbrough's Carolyn Summersgill repeated her 2008 victory in the Womens' race smashing her own year-old course record by a massive 1min 50secs. Summersgill finished in 13th position overall two places ahead of 2007 winner, Tracey Waller of Hartlepool, who was also the first veteran. Waller also bettered the old figures. Kendra White from North York Moors finished 3rd.

Morpeth 11km Road Race.
Thurs. 1st Jan.
Morpeth Harrier Nick Swinburn was a convincing winner of his club's New Years Day 11km Road Race.
The Fell Running specialist and North Eastern Counties Cross Country silver medallist, soon headed the field closely followed by Northumberland-based Bingley Harrier, Matt Whitfield. The pair had broken clear from the chasing group of Mark Brown and Nathan Shrubb of Morpeth, both past winners, and Michael Dawson of North Shields Poly after the first mile of the hilly course. Whitfield made a brave attempt to break away approaching the second mile, but the move was covered by Swinburn, who promptly started to pull away from his rival.
Swinburn extended his advantage to the finish line, with Brown passing Whitfield after halfway.
The margin of victory over Brown was 54secs, with Whitfied, finishing in 3rd place.
Another Morpeth Harrier, Phil Walker was the leading veteran, finishing in 7th position.
Morpeth also won the team event.
Chester Le Street's Angela Hibbs easily won the Womens' race.
The ideal conditions meant that both winning times, were the quickest for many years..
2008 winner, Mary Ferrier of Gateshead finished in 2nd positon, with Bev Whitfield (wife of Matt) taking third place. Tynedale's Lynne Marr was the leading veteran, while Gateshead won the team event.
Result: Distance 10.7km.
