Northern Athletics Indoor Championships.
English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.  Sun. 27th Jan.
The few competitors from the region performed well at yesterday's Northern Athletics Indoor Championships at Sheffield.
Richard Hodgson smashed the record to take the Under 15 Boys' 60m title bettering the old figures by 0.17secs.
Tim Parkin of Gateshead won the Under 17 Mens' Pole Vault and Chloe Gill of Middlesbrough took the Under 17 Womens' Triple Jump title.
Middlesbrough's Ashleigh Wood recovered after a slow start in the Under 17 Womens' 60m Hurdles to narrowly miss gold behind Leeds City's Kim Marchant. Wood had earlier clocked a personal best time when winning her heat.

Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships.
Roundhay Park, Leeds.  Sat. 26th Jan.
North East athletes had to wait for the final event for Junior Women, to take the region's only gold medal at Saturday's Northern Cross Country Championships at a windy but surprisingly dry Roundhay Park, Leeds.
Gateshead's Mary Ferrier came with a late run to overhaul long-time leader Rosie Edwards of Rotherham in the final strides. This was yet another Northern title for Ferrier, who has also won at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 level.
In the Junior Men's event, Morpeth's Jon Taylor took the silver medal behind Yorkshire Senior champion and 2006 English Schools winner, Alistair Brownlee of Bingley. Taylor was supported by Nick Swinburn (9th), Ross Floyd (18th) and Robert Balmbra (38th) as Morpeth gained the silver medals, the region's only team success.
Elswick's Philip Hurst took second place in the Under 17 Mens' event a performance matched by Gosforth's Michael Priestley in the Under 15 Boys' age-group.
Zoe Hewitson of Shildon finished 3rd in the Under 13 Girls' race and Adam Carrington of Morpeth finished in a similar position in the corresponding Boys' race.
Athletes from just outside the region's boundaries gained three titles.
Fergus Roberts of Richmond & Zetland maintained his season's unbeaten record to win the Under 13 Boys' race by a sizeable margin.
Gemma Miles (formerly Philips) of Kendal convincingly won the Senior Womens' race from clubmate Sarah Tunstall. The Cumbrian club took the bronze medals ahead of Chester Le Street for whom Maxine Czarnecka had an excellent run in 16th place. Cumbria also gained gold in the Under 13 Girls' race with Hannah Bethwaite of Ellenborough a convincing winner. Tom Farrell of Border finished 3rd in the Under 17 Mens' race.
Host club Leeds City won the Senior Mens' title for the fourth successive year and also provided race winner David Webb. .

Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays.
Racecourse, Durham City.  Sun. 20th Jan.
A New Marske Harriers team consisting of Junior athletes, proved too good for their older rivals, when winning the feature event at yesterday's annual Durham Cathedral Relays.
The Cleveland club improved on their encouraging third position last year, to comfortably defeat defending champions Sunderland.
Gavin Massngham came home well clear for the Wearsiders on leg 1, with Cleveland Schools' champion, Russell Best coming home in 7th place for New Marske. The improving Michael Dawson took North Shields Poly into the lead on leg 2 as Lewis Gamble- Thompson lifted New Marske into 2nd place, 12 secs behind the leaders. Junior Cross Country International, Ricky Stevenson soon made up the deficit and turned the advantage to 26secs at the finish line, with Patrick Martin moving Sunderland into second position, ahead of Gateshead. Stevenson's time bettered that of Massingham by 1sec. Fourth fastest was Gateshead's European Junior Cross representative, Ross Murray whose 2nd leg lifted his club from 10th to 3rd position.
Morpeth Harriers narrowly defeated their great rivals, Chester Le Street in a thrilling Senior Womens' race ending the Durham club's sequence of six successive victories.
Maxine Czarnecka of Chester Le Street headed the field on leg 1, coming home 12secs ahead of Morpeth's Aiveen Fox.
Tracy Laws maintained the lead on leg 2 but Jane Mooney reduced the advantage to 5secs.
Laura Weightman, like Murray the current English Schools' Intermediate 1500m champion, was given the difficult task of chasing Alyson Dixon, but had made up the deficit before halfway. However, she waited as her rival tried to pull away again, before using her superior speed in the final 200m. Not surprisingly Weightman's time was fastest on the day. North Shields Poly finished in a distant third place, with Gina Rutherford returning to competition, with an impressive final leg.
North Shields also won the Veterans' race finishing in 6th place overall.
It was a double victory for the Poly as their Mens' team had earlier won the Veterans' Relay, this promotion incorporating the Veterans A.A-North East Championship.
Ian Twaddle with the day's fastest time, took North Shields Poly into the lead on leg 2 with Martin Frost maintaining the advantage on leg 3. Paul Given had led for defending champions Sunderland on leg 1 ahead of Tommy Brannon.

North Eastern Counties A.A Indoor Championships.
Gateshead Indoor Performance Centre.  Sat/Sun. 12th/13th Jan.
Several championship bests were set in this weekend's North Eastern Counties' Indoor Championships at the Gateshead Indoor Performance Centre.
The records were mainly set in Saturday's Field event competition.
Chris Kirk, now with the Newham club, bettered his old figures in the Senior Long Jump by 35cms, and for good measure gained a clear victory in yesterday's 60m Final. Adebayo Babatunde of Middlesbrough retained his Senior Triple Jump title, bettering his own record.
Blaydon's Philip Brown retained the Under 20 Shot title, breaking his own figures from last year.
English Schools' bronze medallist, Chloe Gill of Middlesbrough set new figures in the Under 17 Triple Jump.
Lauren Dewdney of Gateshead, also third in last year's English Schools Championship, retained her Under 20 Hurdles title, breaking the existing record by a hundredth-of-a-second.
Gateshead's Tim Parkin repeated his 2007 victory in the Under 17 Pole Vault, bettering the old record by 40cms.
In the Under 13 age-group, Middlesbrough's Patrick O'Connor broke the existing record in the Hurdles and High Jump.
Jessica Read of Gateshead retained her titles in the Under 15 60m and Long Jump.
Faye Bowles of Darlington won a hotly contested Under 17 60m.
Arguably the athlete of the meeting was Middlesbrough's Ashley Wood, who gained two gold and two bronze medals, and also gained an impressive score when winning the Pentathlon, earlier in the week.

Additional Comments: Most of info. Sending results to AW very time consuming. AW standards for Women in 60m are very "soft" compared to those for 100m outdoors.
Excellent meeting organised by Kevin Flannery and Janice Kaufman. Thanks to Janice for quick results. Kate Murphy although entered (and in results) for Birtley was wearing Gateshead vest. U13G Hurdles winning time bettered record, but was by guest competitor.

Defending champions, Sunderland  leapt to the top of the Mens'  Division 1 table, taking the team honours at their own Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League promotion at Farringdon, on Saturday.
With two fixtures remaining Sunderland now hold a 2 point advantage over previous leaders, Elswick.
Morpeth extended their advantage at the head of Division 2.
On the testing course which was partly muddy and partly frostbound,
Michael Dawson of North Shields Poly easily won the individual race from the slow pack, while Sunderland's Brian Rushworth, now in the Over 45 category, clocked the fastest time, leading the Wearsiders home in 5th position, from the fast pack.
Gateshead's Jessica Trowbridge won the Senior Womens' race from the fast pack. Morpeth took the team title from Heaton, who extended their lead at the top of the table.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Temple Park, South Shields. Sat. 5th Jan.

The competition for the League titles intensified after the third fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League at Temple Park, on Saturday. Heavy rain through the week (though the day was mainly fine and mild), meant the underfoot conditions were heavier than normal at this venue.
Morpeth Harriers won the Overall team title in the Senior Mens' race and regain the lead from Heaton in Division 2.
Sunderland Harriers were first in Division 1 and the defending champions now lie joint second with South Shields, 3 points behind Elswick.
Paul Given of Sunderland easily won the Individual race from medium pack runner, Stewy Bell of Chester Le Street. Mark Brown of Morpeth clocked the fastest time finishing 6th, from the fast pack.
In the Womens' race, fast pack runners, Tracy Laws of Chester Le Street and Michelle Holt of Sunderland passed long- time leader Alice Rolfe-Silvester of Claremont in the closing stages to take the first two places. In the team event, Heaton took the honours and now head the table, two points ahead of Sunderland.
It was a good day for fast pack runners, with Marcus Cram of Morpeth (Under 15 Boys) and Steph Bruce of Tynedale (Under 13 Girls) winning their respective.events.
Rachael Denton of Morpeth running from the slow pack, won the Under 15 Girls race and also clocked the fastest time.
Gateshead's Claire Baudouin easily won the Junior Womens' race, with Delyth James of Morpeth moving through to second from the fast pack.
Tristan Venus of Tynedale (Under 17 Men) and Adam Harrington of Morpeth (Under 13 Boys) clocked the fastest times in their respective events, both moving to top three places from the fast pack.

Morpeth 11km Road Race.
Tues. 1st Jan.

Chris Lamb of Chester Le Street started 2008 with a comfortable victory, at yesterday's Morpeth 11km Road Race.
In the wet conditions, Lamb was content to share the early lead with Morpeth's Nathan Shrubb (successful in 2004 and 2005), before dropping his rival after 1.5M.

As Lamb extended his advantage, Michael Dawson of North Shields Poly moved into second place ahead of Chris Muir of South Shields. Shrubb had dropped back to 4th at halfway.

Lamb crossed the line with 18secs to spare over Shrubb, who recovered in the final mile, to overhaul Dawson.

Paul Waterston was the leading veteran in 7th place and with Andrew Lawrence (8th), Morpeth took the team honours.

North Eastern Junior Cross Country champion, Mary Ferrier of Gateshead improved on her second place in 2007, to win the Womens' race, finishing in 18th place overall. Teenage athletes took the first four places. Delyth James of Morpeth finished second ahead of Claire Baudouin of Gateshead and Anghared Porteous of Morpeth. 2007 winner, Jayne Goble of North Shields Poly had to settle for 5th ahead of the leading veteran, Sue Calvert of Morpeth. The host club also took the team honours. .
