North of England A.A Cross Country Championships.
Heaton Park, Manchester.  Sat. 27th Jan.
It was on the whole, a disappointing day for North East athletes at Saturday's North of England Cross Country Championships at Heaton Park, Manchester. Competitors covered a testing course, mainly firm, but with sticky conditions in part. The wind was also getting stronger as the meeting progressed.
The best performances came in the final race for Junior men. Morpeth's Nick Swinburn came with a strong finish to move from 4th to 2nd in the final 200m. However, he was unable to challenge runaway winner, Kevin Deighton of Bridlington, who finished 16th in the recent European Championship. Cumbria-based Adrian Holliday finished 4th ahead of Jack Martin (Sunderland), Lewis Gamble-Thompson (New Marske) and non-scoring Morpeth runner, Jon Taylor. Swinburn also led Morpeth to the bronze medals in the team event.
Kate Avery of Shildon, surrendered her Under 15 Girls' title finishing 2nd to the in-form Sale Harrier and 2006 Under 13 champion, Sarah Barker.
Morag McDonnell of Chester Le Street, finished 3rd in the Senior Womens' race, behind runaway winner, Hatti Dean of Hallamshire. McDonnell was supported by Alyson Dixon (7th), Tracy Laws (35th) and Angela Hunter (45th) as the Durham club took the bronze medals in the team event.
Mary Ferrier of Gateshead put on her usual strong finish to finish third in the Under 20 Womens' race.
Tynedale took the silver medals in the Under 13 Boys' event.
They were led home by Simon Greenwood and Josh Brown who crossed the line together in 11th and 12th places, respectively. Fergus Roberts from Richmond took the individual silver and Cameron Boyek of Shildon, third with 50m to go, was denied a medal finishing 4th.
Other top six finishers were Blaydon's Helen Gertig (6th in Under 17) and Rachel Denton of Morpeth (5th in Under 13).
Andi Jones of Salford retained his Senior Mens' title holding off a very late challenge from Sale's Gareth Raven. Mark Hood of Sunderland led the region's challenge in 13th position. Morpeth Harriers finished 6th behind runaway winners, Leeds City.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used, but strange editing at end of report. Weather showery at start but bright most of time.Got very churned-up in final 50m, as meeting progressed. Results courtesy of Ian Thomas (U20 Men from website). 651 finishers in SM race (last time: 69:25); 262 SW (46:31). 51 finishers JW (50 H Dix 30:43; 51 J Fenwick (R&Z) 32:19). Advertised distances seemed on long side, so I have adapted knocking off 300m per medium/long lap. Laura Weightman (U17) was spiked early on and had to be taken to hospital. Morpeth could have finished 3rd if Laura ran to her potential. Even with Jon Taylor counting, Morpeth would have still taken bronze (U20). I think Jonathan Powell (SM) who was in 20's after lap one, must have dropped out. A "ghost " runner was placed third in SW race, but pulled out before finish (do not know the story about this). Other Heaton performances: SM: 507 A Mulliss 53:59; 650 G Routledge 69:12 ("outsprinted" in last 100m). Sheffield Performance Centre. Day 2. Sun. 21st Jan.
The region gained three more gold medals at yesterday's second day of the North of England Indoor Championships for Juniors, at Sheffield Performance Centre.
Richard Kilty of Gateshead added to his 60m title won 24 hours earlier, by breaking the record by 0.14secs in the Under 20 200m. It was also his personal best time both indoors and outdoors.
Shildon's Melissa Carr retained her Under 20 Triple Jump title, bettering her old record of 10.60m on two occasions. She also gained the silver medal in the Long Jump.

Additional Comments: Only results used. Results had to be copied by hand, and therefore depth not as much as I would have liked. Apologies therefore for any incorrect name spelling, and also accuracy of area, athlete competed for. The balance of points for winning teams in Senior events, does not add up. Weather very windy (wondered if event would go ahead in early hours), but stayed bright and dry. Underfoot conditions quite firm. Steph Crowell and Eleanor Murray fiinished about 15th and 25th respectively, in IG race.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Duration of Meeting was quite quick (11.00am - 2.00pm). Results courtesy of Richard Hunter/Mrs Dewell. Kilty (7.03secs ht) I think had false start in final (could not see), which is probably why his time was outside 7secs. Other performances included Kieran Flannery 7.54secs (=3rd in ht and 6th in A Final). Eric Smart (5th in ht 7.65, 4th in B Final 7.72).

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Farringdon School, Sunderland.  Sat. 13th Jan.
Sunderland Harriers drew level with league-leaders Wallsend and now look set for another Division 1 title, after victory at Saturday's third Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture, at Farringdon. 10-times North Eastern champion, Brian Rushworth led home the Sunderland counters, clocking the day's fastest time moving through into 8th position from the fast pack.
Individual victory in the windy conditions, went to new Heaton recruit James Buis, who came home with 10secs to spare over Tynedale veteran, Tim Wylie. Wallsend's Tony Carter maintained his recent excellent form, to finish third from the medium pack.
Elvet Striders extended their lead at the top of the Senior Womens' table but had to settle for second position on the day to Morpeth. Gillian Barry of Sunderland won the race, with the minor places going to fast pack runners Donna James of Elvet and Jane Mooney of Morpeth.
Fast pack runners dominated the Under 17 Mens' race. Mark Cochrane of Morpeth gained victory, over what was once again, a very small field.
Natalie Young of Morpeth easily won the Junior Womens' race, clocking the fastest overall time. Tristan Venus of Tynedale clocked the fastest time for the third successive occasion, finishing second from the fast pack in the Under 15 Boys' race. The Hexham-based club had an excellent day, winning all the male young athletes' races and they also gained victory, in the Senior Division 2 team event.

Additional Comments: Report edited. Also results cut off in mid-stream (halfway through SW). Results courtesy of Hugh and Steph Bingham, by e mail. I assumed as it was windy at Gateshead on Saturday pm (though not in morning), it was also windy at Sunderland (since confirmed). 263 finishers in SM (last time: 1:31:04 ?), 63 SW (34:23). Only eight runners in U17M race.Congratulations to James Buis, who I understand was 2nd with a lap to go. Claire H looked to be unlucky not to make first 3, as their race was longer than usual. Other Heaton performances were: 76 S Daley 36:42; 92 J Moore 32:03 (same time as JB !); 143 M Gibson 38:25; 145 A Ball 38:28; 150 D Robins 36:17 (back after injury); 155 S McEntee 38:50; 169 J Gibson 39:16; 172 I McKinnon 39:32; 187 E Baty 39:58; 197 D Wright 40:29; 203 C Burn 41:09; 209 C McEntee 41:42; 216 A Mulliss 42:27; 238 D Brignall 43:52; 255 R Checkley 46:47; 261 G Routledge 54:55  (4th team Div 2, by my calculations one point behind 3rd - lie 6th overall). Additional Comments:  Most of info used but some strange editing. Weather was fine but cold. Underfoot conditions were surprisingly firm on most of course. 281 finishers in SM event (last time: 60:37). 66 in SW (last time: 29:24). Sadly only 12 in U17 Mens' race. Excellent run by Eleanor Murray in JW event.
Apolgies to Jo Zoppi, who was omitted from fastest times (not sure why ?), with 20:19. Other Heaton performances were (slight advance worry about turn-out, due to long holiday period):  SM: 77 J Moore 34:51; 125 A Ball 41:10; 170 M Gibson 42:32; 194 J Gibson 43:33; 202 E Baty 44:15; 237 A Mulliss 47:01; 240 D Brignall 47:04; 281 G Routledge 60:37  (Team 24th/10th in Div 2, now lie 7th overall) SW: 21 H Astley 21:15; 33 J Critchley 24:09.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used but in small print. Results compiled by Jenny Tinkler posted through door (probably by Dick Balding), before I returned from Consett. Meeting must have finished quite early. Dreadful turn-out in U15 Boys' category (1 athlete ?), and not many Senior Women either.

Morpeth 11km Road Race.
Mon. 1st Jan.
Britain's 6th ranked 10000m runner, David Wardle returned to his native North East, to win yesterday's Morpeth 11km Road Race, for the third time. Wardle, who was successful in the first two years that the event was moved to New Years Day in 2002 and 2003, was content to stay in the leading group of four after the first 1.5M. He was joined by 2006 winner and runner-up, Mark Brown and Neil Wilkinson of Morpeth and their clubmate, Nick Swinburn, who had won a Fell race at Rothbury in the morning. Not surprisingly Swinburn lost contact after 2M, before Wardle pulled away from the opposition on the hilliest section of the course after 2.5M. Wilkinson offered a brief challenge but was overhauled by Brown soon after.
Wardle increased the advantage at the finish line to 51secs, with Brown holding off a revived challenge from Wikinson for second place. Another Morpeth athlete, Les Atkinson was the first veteran finishing in 6th position overall.
Jayne Goble of North Shields Poly, won a hard fought Womens' race from North Eastern Junior Cross Country champion, Mary Ferrier of Gateshead. Gwen Cavill of Morpeth was the leading veteran in third place.

(Newcastle Journal:  Tues 2nd January 2007).

Additional Comments:  Only report used (footnote: results in 3rd Jan edition). 122 finishers (last time: 72:32). Thanks to Mike Bateman for results. Weather cold and windy but bright and dry. Wind had abated since overnight gales. Race partly sponsored (and prizes presented) by Jim Alder, who received MBE in New Years' Honours List. I understand Andrew Lawrence and probably Georgia Campbell, competed on Town Moor in morning. Poor turn out from Heaton. Performances were: 72 C McEntee 50:06; 99 E Appleby; 119 G Routledge 63:25.
