North of England Cross Country Championships
Berry Edge, Consett.  Sat. 29th Jan.
The region gained it's usual haul of medals, at Saturday's North of England Cross Country Championships at Berry Edge, Consett. Morpeth Harriers were overall the strongest team, winning two individual, two team gold and one individual bronze medal. Conditions were surprisingly ideal, bright mild and dry with little wind. Conditions underfoot were on the whole good, but a severe hill on each lap, provided a tough test of stamina. Durham University student Aiveen Fox was a surprise winner of the Under 20 Womens' race. Fox, only third in the North Eastern championship, gained her first major title, pulling away from her rivals on the 2nd of the two laps. Fox was ably backed by Danielle Watts (13th), Rebecca Adams (27th) and Sarah Graham (37th) as Morpeth successfully defended the team title.
North Eastern champion, Delyth James of Morpeth, who five days earlier won the Northumberland Schools' title (ahead of Mary Ferrier), was a gun-to-tape winner of the Under 17 event. James, 5th in 2004, won by 25secs, with defending champion Ferrier of Gateshead, coming with a late run to take third place.
The Northumberland club also took gold in the Under 17 Mens' team event, with Jonathan Young their first counter in 8th place. Young was supported by Ross Floyd (13th), Robert Balmbra (24th) and Nick Swinburn (39th). Morpeth's Laura Weightman finished in 3rd place in the Under 15 Girls' race, after holding a 30m lead for the first 1.5 km. Shildon's Kate Avery convincingly won the Under 13 Girls' event by a margin of 16secs. Avery, who has also an easer winner of  the North Eastern and Durham Schools Championships, came home 100m clear of her rivals.
North Eastern champions, Sunderland gained the gold medals in the Under 13 Boys' event, with Nathan Reed leading the challenge in 2nd position. Reed was ably supported by James Chapman (12th), Liam Wintrip (26th) and Scott Younger (40th). A far-from-full strength Chester Le Street took the silver medals in the Senior Womens' race with Alyson Dixon their first counter in 11th position. Pauline Powell of Blackburn was the surprise winner of the individual event. Former Wallsend Harrier, Sonia Thomas, champion in 2002 and 2003, finished 4th, while an eye-catching run in 10th, came from Heather Monro of Durham, who is an international Orienteer. Kevin Farrow of Derby won the Senior Mens' race, becoming only the 2nd person, to win four titles at different age-groups.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Apologies for any inaccuracies, but I also had to compose 900 words for AW.  Everything seemed to go ok, and weather was kind. Advertised distances seemed to be accurate. Congratulations to all medallists, but I think Robert Balmbra would be the only member of winning Morpeth team to be happy with his run.
Natalie Dawson dropped out in U20W event after being passed by Sarah Graham approaching halfway. Disappointed with strength of Morpeth SM team, but good runs from Platts and Brown. Brian Rushworth moved up to 1st 20 afer lap 1, bu then dropped back. The Browns (from Nestle Rowntrees) although delighted with Nina Griffith's run, were annoyed that a good 4th runner ( L Gibbs ?) did not compete, as they would have taken team title at U20W level. Quite a good turn-out even in U20 races (83M + 48W). 556 Senior Men (last time: 88:10) and 168 Women (last time: 59:54). Additional Comments: Most of info used. Results courtesy of Paul Ponton. Missing were names of Newcastle counters in IB event. Knew Perrins finished 4th, but other names supplied by Kevin Flannery on Wed (26th). W Pike finished 3rd. Weather was cold and quite breezy but was at least dry. This is a good venue for this meeting and the different date seemed to be more popular. G Cockburn was listed as 4th SG, but I am sure this was Nat Dawson. Sam Crowe did not look well. Miss Lorraine certainly has a wide range of talent and was especially impressive here. Nathan Shrubb did not run and Kieran Flannery dropped out on 1st lap (of three). Only 15 finished SB race (11 runners). Other leading posiions were: SB: 7 A Welford (Nc) 31:32 (looked to be wearing a Wallsend vest !); 8 R Foster (T) 31:36  IB: 7 J Gibson (Nc) 21:24; 8 C Parker (Nc) 21:28; 9 M Cochrane 21:49  SG: 7 C Gilmore (NT) 22:37; 8 R Forster (Nc) 22:38  IG: 7 G Rutherford (NT) 21:50; 8 H Davies (NT) 21:52  (times of lower positions in SG/IG could be subject to change, as both races were combined). However ND and CG have correct times.

North of England Indoor Championships.
Sheffield Arena.  Sun. 23rd Jan.
The North East provided three winners at yesterday's second part of the Northern Indoor Championships, at Sheffield, all breaking the existing record. Kieran Flannery of Gateshead, 3rd in the 2004 English Schools 400m Hurdles, easily won the Under 20 800m, taking just over 2secs off the previous figures. Sam Hart of Gateshead won the corresponding Womens' race, bettering the old record by 3secs. Emma Morris of South Shields, gained some consolation for a disappointing High Jump competition, by winning the Under 20 200m, shaving five- hundredths of a second off the old figures. It was a good day for the Flannery family as younger brother Niall, was a close 2nd in the Under 15 Hurdles (inside the old record) and was also runner-up in the Long Jump. Gateshead's Nicola Pearson also gained two silver medals in the Under 15 60m and Long Jump.

Addiitional Comments: Only results used (probably due to lateness). Apologies but CBP should of course be added to U20 800 winning time. Congratulations to all North East medallists. It was a pleasure to officiate at a magnificent venue. The lane draw also seemed to have less influence on the result, than at other Indoor Arenas, which is a good thing. Both 800m winners led all the way. Sam Hart won Cleveland Schools XC two days earlier. D Hastings Long finished 2nd and only 5 ran.in SG event. Of course re records, there have been only two previous Championships, on a full 200m circuit. In U17 200, Gerald Phiri set record of 21.82, also bettering old figures in semi. In U15G 200, Rebekah Wilson beat record 3 times, winning final in 25.31. They were the two main stars. Other performances included: U17: 200: 4 R Kilty 23.66 (23.35ht); 5 L McElwee 24.17 (24.02s/f); 6 J Sinclair 24.62 (23.77ht)  U15: 200: 5 J Summers 25.32 (25.05ht)  U20W: 4 S De La Hunt 26.29

DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier League Sherman Cup and Davison Shield.
Temple Park, South Shields.  Sat. 22nd Jan.
Morpeth Harriers won the Sherman Cup for the fourth successive year, at Saturday's DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier League promotion, at a cold and frosty Temple Park, South Shields. Morpeth had to wait until the final event, for Under 15 Boys to overhaul long-time leaders Sunderland to gain victory by 3pts, in a competition, which determines the overall strength in all the four male age-groups. Sunderland won the Under 13 and Senior Mens' team events, but a victory in the Under 17 event for Morpeth, set the scene for the finale where Sunderland still led by 3pts. Morpeth also regained the Davison Shield, the corresponding Womens' competition, but in this case were the only club to complete full teams in all age-groups, winning three of the four events..
2004 Northern Under 17 champion, Lewis Timmins of Gosforth, proved too strong for his older rivals, in the Senior Mens' individual race. The Heaton Manor sixth-form student, who runs in today's Northumberland Schools Championships, pulled away from his main rival, Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street, on the 2nd of the 3 laps. Guesting athlete, David Wardle of London Irish finished 3rd. Morpeth's Mark Brown finished 4th, while Mark Hood in 5th, was the first Sunderland counter. Jonathan Young (Morpeth) (Under 17), Sam Potter of North Shields (Under 15) and North Eastern champion, Tristan Venus of Tynedale (Under 13), won the other male events.
Claremont's Kate Chapman, winner of last weekend's Great North Winter Run at Edinburgh, was again successful in the Senior Womens' race, pulling away from Sunderland's Michelle Holt after the halfway point. Heaton's Jo Smith took third place. Holt led Sunderland to their one Womens' team victory. Natalie Dawson of Morpeth easily won the Junior race and clubmate Laura Weightman, the North Eastern champion, was successful at Under 15 level. Durham Schools' Year 7 champion, Sigorney Bell of Gateshead was a runaway winner in the Under 13 event.

Emma Morris won Hurdles heat (8.96) but did not run final. Adam Dalby clocked 53.00 in 400m semi, but the final result now seems to have disappeared from website. Heat times when better than above included: T Patton 50.63, Other leading North East performances included:  U17: 60: 4 R Kilty 7.24; 60H: 4 A Dalby 9.20 (9.14ht)  U17W: 60: 6 F Winspear 8.04; 7 L Arthur 8.05 (8.03s/f)   .

Durham Cathedral Relays.
Durham Cricket Club.  Sun. 16th Jan.
Sunderland Harriers ended Morpeth's 3 year dominance, by comfortably winning yesterday's 22nd Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relay event, at the Race Course. Tom Ranger led for the Morpeth B team after leg 1, ahead of Sunderland's Patrick Martin, with North Eastern Cross Country champion, Neil Wilkinson of Morpeth A, close behind in 3rd. Mark Hood soon pulled away for the Wearsiders on leg 2, with Gavin Massingham maintaining the advantage on the final leg. Gosforth took second place after moving from 4th to 2nd on leg 2. Although crossing the finish line in 3rd, Morpeth A were disqualified after an infringement on the first take-over, leaving their B team to take the third place awards. Ranger's time remained the fastest overall.
Sunderland also won the Veterans' race, which incorporated the Veterans A.A - North East Championships. Despite Rob Rush losing his balance and falling when finishing 3rd on leg 1, Brian Rushworth soon made up the lost ground, to open up a sizeable lead on leg 2, which was maintained by Dave Robertson on leg 3. The Morpeth Over 50 team took 2nd place ahead of early leaders, Wallsend.
Chester Le Street won the Womens' race for the 4th successive year. Claire Simpson led for Jarrow and Hebburn on leg 1, 8 secs ahead of Steph Robson, However, Morag McDonnell soon made up the deficit taking Chester Le Street well ahead of their rivals, clocking the day's fastest time. Alyson Dixon increased the advantage to 1min 17secs at the finish line. Morpeth took the runners-up awards after a fine run by Delyth James moved them into 2nd place on leg 2. Like Sunderland in the Mens' events, Chester Le Street also completed the double by retaining the Veterans' title. They led throughout with the ever-reliable Heather Robinson, clocking the fastest time on leg 1.
Morpeth held off a strong challenge from Sunderland to win the Young Athletes Relay for the 2nd successive year.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 17th January 2005).

Additional Comments: 30 Senior Men, 35 Veteran Men, 19 Senior Womens' teams completed. Sadly only six Young Athletes teams. Rebecca Shield (2nd on leg 1) (5:06) was only Durham runner. Morpeth set course record bettering previous figures by 19secs, Weightman's time on leg 1, was easily a U15G record (by 12secs). Crosby set new figures by 7secs. Also Reed bettered the old record by 5secs. Weather was bright and got quite mild as meeting progressed with early frost, quickly disappearing. Trish West, now wearing the Wallsend colours, clocked 14:23 on leg 2 as a non-scorer on incomplete team.
Results couresy of Andrew Billett. Heaton fielded 4 athletes. Jo Smith clocked 11:19 in Senior Women's event. The Senior Mens' team of Scott McEntee (11:25), Malcolm Gibson (10:58) and John Moore (a pleasing 9:57 to make up 3 places) finishing 30th in 32:20. Unfortunately no positions were given after each leg, and with incomplete teams not included, difficult to pinpoint exact placing.

Durham Schools Cross Country Championships.
Meadowfield, Durham.  Sat. 15th Jan.
Lewis Moses and Julia Orr, both of Darlington, retained their Senior titles at Saturday's Durham Schools Cross Country Championships, at a cold and frosty Meadowfield Sports Centre. The pair also took the Intermediate titles, 2 years ago.
Moses passed early leader Sean Hall of Gateshead at the halfway point, and with a good quality in depth, in this event, Durham must have a good chance of gaining medals in the National Championships, at Norwich, in March. Orr was the easiest winner of the day, but . the most impressive performance came from Kate Avery of South West Durham. The current North Eastern Under 13 champion, was a runaway winner of the Junior Girls' event, coming home 52secs ahead of her nearest rival. Warren Roberts (SW Durham), Carl Bell (West Wearside), and Rebecca Shield (Derwentside) won the Intermediate Boys, Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls events, respectively. Scott Younger of Wearside and Sigourney Bell of Gateshead, took the two Minor (Year 7) titles. Though no full team completed in the Senior Girls' event, Durham Central once more proved to be the strongest area overall.

Additional Comments: All of info used. Weather bright and dry, with thawing frost throughout meeting. Distances were as listed on race info, but times seemed slow. Some names of non-regular athletes, might be subject to change, as writing on results sheets was not brilliant. Apologies for this (problem mainly in IB and IG events, where overall standard was not high). Poor performance overall from South Tyneside. Steph Crowell, an absentee, has been sidelined with illness since before Xmas. North Eastern Counties A.A Indoor Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Wed.12th Jan.
At the 3rd part of the North Eastern Counties' Indoor Championships, English Schools Junior champion, Phillip Collins bettered the Under 17 High Jump record of 1.85m, on two occasions, equalling his personal best outdoor clearance. Competing in his first Indoor competition, Collins cleared 1.89m on his 3rd attempt, 1.92m on his 2nd, and narrowly failed at 1.95m. Mark Christie of Sale was also in record breaking form in the Senior Pole Vault, adding 10cm to his own figures. Lianne Tucker of Blaydon, whose preferred event is the Discus, set new figures in the Under 20 Shot, adding 38cms to her previous best distance. She also narrowly missed the Senior record by 3cms.
Sally Scott of Gateshead, ranked in the top fifty UK Senior list, set inaugural figures to win the Under 15 Pole Vault.
English Schools champion, Emma Morris of South Shields in her first competion of the indoor season, was untroubled in winning the Senior High Jump. Paul Reed of Morpeth took the Senior Shot, and now approaches the 60 mark of county titles won.

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 17th January 2005).

Additional Comments: Most of info used despite time lapse. Quite a good meeting. Christie equalled record before his winning vault. Stacey failed at 1.95m in High Jump, but slightly unlucky as he had to divert to Pole Vault, between attempts. Big poser is that Breen topped U13 rankings in 2004, but is throwing as far with heavier Shot and is not gaining AW U15 standard. Inaugural record for Parkin. Did not mention SW PV record as it is not as good as U15. Pottinger would haver needed to clear 1.80m even to equal Mandy Humble's 1994 U17 HJ record.

Additional Comments: Only used due to "quiet" weekend. Listed were most noteworthy results. Nicola Pearson won heat of U17 60m as guest (8.4) ahead of Steph Lamb (8.6). This was because her U15 event was straight final. Apologies to Eleanor Murray who was actually 3rd fastest overall in U15 600m, winning her heat (there were 4) in 2:09.3. Donnelly's 600m time is fastest for a while.

Additional Comments: Due to cancellations this became main story. All of info used. Jacqui Elliott finished 4th in Long Jump, but not sure of her distance. Juilia Straker only gained marks with final 2 efforts, after 4 no-jumps, though her first leap was very close. Weitz also beat record with earlier leap (6.85m ?). I think his record (a pb. by 2 not 1cm) came in Round 4., Russell Best's Triple Jump was an inaugural record. Though not a great turn-out, there were good quality performances, especially in Senior events. Meeting lasted 3.5hrs. Triple Jump did not attract many entries.

Old Monks 6 Multi Terrain
Hart Village nr Hartlepool.  Sun. 2nd Jan.
Sunderland Harrier, Steven Potts was a comfortable winner of yesterday's Old Monk 6 Multi Terrain event, at Hart Village. In the cold windy conditions, Potts headed a breakaway group of three in the early stages, before Hartlepool's Adam Churchill took the lead for a short time after 1.5M. Potts broke away again on the more difficult part of the course, extending his advantage to 150m at the finish line over Mark Armstrong of the host club, with Churchill dropping back to third. Paul Frodsham of West Cheshire was the leading veteran in 4th place. Hartlepool also provided the Womens' winner, with veteran Tracey Waller coming home 200m ahead of early leader, Kerry Matthew with Emma Palleschi of Billingham Marsh House taking third place.
Result. Distance 9.1km.
1 S Potts (Sun) 31:57; 2 M Armstrong (Hart) 32:26; 3 A Churchill (Hart) 32:59; 4 P Frodsham (W Ches, M40) 34:00; 5 A Minister (Hart) 34:36; 6 M Bell (N Ayc) 35:05; 7 J Mason (Darl, M40) 35:59; 8 A Hardy (Hart) 36:20; 9 K Edwards (Hart, M40) 36:40; 10 G Reid ( N Ayc, M40) 37:10; 11 K Galbraith (Hart, M40) 37:45; 12 P Kelly (Darl, M40) 38:28

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 3rd January 2005).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. 70 finishers (last time: 72:40). Results courtesy of Peter Johnson. A good low-key event, which deserved a bigger field. Had lift (along with Kevin Carr) to 1.5M point.
Both winning times bettered the course records, but I understand around 200m was taken off the normal route. Venue (now Village Hall) change, also meant new start/finish area. Fiona Beedle finished 9th lady (50:48). George Routledge (a better run) finished 66th (58:45).

Morpeth Harriers 11km Road Race.
Sat. 1st Jan.
Morpeth Harriers dominated their own 11km Road Race on Saturday as Nathan Shrubb gained victory for the second successive year. Unlike in 2004 when he took the lead in the final mile, the sixth form student from Seaton Burn, this time pulled away from the leading group of 8 runners after the first mile. On the tough hilly course, which was exposed to the strong wind, Shrubb extended his advantage throughout to cross the finish line on Morpeth Common, 250m ahead of clubmate and leading veteran, Les Atkinson. Another Morpeth athlete, Ian Harding finished in 3rd place. Not surprisingly Morpeth also took the team title.
The host club also provided the winner of the Womens' race, with new recruit Sarah Heatley gaining a convincing victory. The former Gateshead athlete, 2nd in the North Eastern Counties' 10M championship, came home with 300m to spare over 2003 winner Erika Johnson of Swaledale, with another Morpeth athlete, Gwenda Cavill finishing 3rd as veterans occupied the first three places.
Result.
1 N Shrubb (Morp, U20) 35:55; 2 L Atkinson (Morp, M50) 36:38; 3 I Harding (Morp) 36:42; 4 J Ross (North'd FR, M40) 37:18; 5 N Armsworth (Morp) 37:31; 6 A Lawrence (Morp, U20) 37:39; 7 A Swinburne (Morp) 37:43; 8 P Walker (Blay) 37:53; 9 R Jacobson (Blay, M40) 38:43; 10 G Dixon (Morp, M40) 39:00; 11 P Jameson (Tyne) 39:21; 12 A Jenkins (Morp, M50) 39:29; 13 R Johnson (Swale) 39:40; 14 M McNally (Els, M55) 39:42; 15 D Armstrong (Els) 39:42

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 3rd January 2005).

Additional Comments: All info used. 124 finishers which is easily the most since ran on New Year's Day, and I think also the most since race on this course, was revived around 1990. Last time was 69:14. Results courtesy of the Batemans. Heatley (34th) is (I think) daughter of former Marathon specialist Basil. Apologies to Christine Courtney (86th in 50:54), who was actually 10th lady (she was listed as male).
Went in lead car with Jim Alder (later went to match). McDonald of South Shields (21st) led briefly in early stages. No veterans over M60 were denoted but either Pinkney (not sure of age) or Bob Moore (95th in 52:26) was leading M65. Not sure if any M70's. Women only listed until W45. Dave Whitmore finished 107th (55:08)..
Heaton had small turn-out (Newcastle match and Moor Run were possible reasons). Placings were: 78 Colin McEntee 49:10 (SM went to match); 83 Ruth Sills; 99 Kelly McEntee 53:27 (13L) and 123 George Routledge 66:36.
