Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
East Cramlington Nature Reserve, Northumberland.  Sat. 28th Feb.
Morpeth's Ian Hudspith returned to Harrier League competition, to clock the fastest time at Saturday's fourth Start Fitness  fixture at East Cramlington Nature Reserve.
Conditions were bright and dry with the course taking in some very muddy and some bone-dry sections.
Running from the fast pack, Hudspith moved through to fifth position in the 300-strong field.
The event was again won by a Medium Pack runner. This time Jon Archer of Low Fell overhauled early leader Damien Weston of Sunderland and former top youngster Daniel Flint of Blaydon, in the final 800m of the 3 lap course.
Defending champions, Sunderland took the team event from Morpeth. With two fixtures remaining, the Wearsiders, after an indifferent start, are now only 3 points behind new leaders Wallsend.
Sunderland Strollers were victorious in Division 2 and a strong performance from a resurgent Jarrow & Hebburn squad, saw them extend their lead in Division 3.
Morpeth's Delyth James, a late addition to this weekend's North East Inter Counties team, justified selection with an impressive victory in the Senior Womens' race.
Running from the fast pack, the Birmingham University student, caught early leader Ingrid Hope of Sunderland shortly after halfway, pulling away to a victory of over a minute.
Tynedale packed well to take the team title and now lie one point ahead of defending champions, Heaton in the League standings.
It was a good day for fast pack athletes with Laura Weightman of Morpeth (Under 20 Women), Greg Ritchie of Jarrow & Hebburn (Under 17 Men), and Steph Bruce of Tynedale (Under 15 Girls) also gaining victories.
Newcomer Alison Brown of Morpeth won the Under 13 Girls' race holding off the in-form fast pack runner, Sophie Forster of Birtley.
Matthew Coulthard of Shildon easily won the Under 15 Boys' race and Ryan Anderson of Elswick was successful in the Under 13 event.

Saucony National Cross Country Championships.
Parliament Hill Fields, London.  Sat. 21st Feb.
The small band of North East athletes had a day of mixed fortunes at Saturday's Saucony National Cross Country Championships at London's Parliament Hill Fields.
On a mild sunny day, the hilly course was in good condition with it's usual combination of very dry and very muddy sections.
Best performance came from Shildon's Kate Avery who finished 2nd in the Under 17 Womens' race. Avery held the lead over her great rival Laura Park, now with Kendal, with 1km remaining, but the pair were passed in the closing stages by Aldershot's Louise Small.
The race was held in conjunction with the Junior Womens' event, where Aldershot's 3-times European champion Steph Twell completed her last outing in this age-group with victory over European bronze medalist Lauren Howarth of Leigh.
As Avery and Park defeated most of the Junior competitors, the pair will hope to gain selection for the World Championships at Jordan, after the Trials in Nottingham in two weeks time.
In the Senior Womens' race former Wallsend Harrier Sonia Samuels (formerly Thomas) took the bronze medal behind Hallamshire's Steeplechase International, Hatty Dean.
In second place was Kirby Stephen-based Kendal athlete and European Under 23 silver medallist, Sarah Tunstall of Kendal. Former Elswick Harrier, Justina Heslop finished in 7th place after lying third at halfway. Gemma Miles (12th) and North East-based Rebecca Robinson (14th) also gained top twenty places for Kendal.
Cumbria had an excellent day, providing two gold medal winners.
Carlisle's Abbie Hetherington won the Under 13 Girls' race and James Knox of Helme Hill gained victory in the Under 13 Boys' event. The pair had also won the Northern title at St Helens, last month.
Another Northern champion, Dan Schofield of Scarborough took bronze in the Under 17 Mens' race.
Frank Tickner of Wells, the winner at Penshaw in 2007, took the Senior Mens' title overhauling Stockport's Steve Vernon, in the final 2km.
Morpeth's Nick Swinburn ran well to finish in 11th place.
Chris Peverley of Chester Le Street (12th in Under 13 Boys) and Sophie Forster of Birtley (19th in Under 13 Girls) both gained top twenty places.

Additional Comments: Only results sent. These courtesy of Janice Kaufman (Friday afternoon). Again a good turn-out of younger athletes (half term) but not many Seniors. Where have all the Pole Vaulters gone ?  (only two in results).  Unfortunately heats are not included in official results, so leading two U17 60m runners (unnoticed on night) may not have competed  in heats listed.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Cardinal Hume School, Wrekenton.  Sat. 14th Feb

After a late course inspection, the 3rd Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture at Wrekenton on Saturday went ahead, and attracted large fields.Elswick Junior Philip Hurst defied the slushy conditions, to win the Senior Mens' event. Running from the medium pack, Hurst took the lead on the second circuit pulling away to a 13secs victory over Matthew Nicholson of Morpeth, with new Gateshead recruit Chris Lamb taking third place. On a rarely seen occasion, the first four runners all started from the medium pack. Gateshead's Junior International, Ross Murray clocked the fastest time, finishing in 7th place from the fast pack.Heaton took the team title and now lead the Division 1 table by 1 point from neighbours, Wallsend.
Gateshead, despite finishing 2nd here, and Jarrow and Hebburn head the Division 2 and 3 tables, respectively.
Chester Le Street's Emma Waterhouse gained a record breaking margin of victory, in the Senior Womens' race, leading all the way to cross the finish line over 3mins ahead of Morpeth's Kate Chapman.
The Scottish athlete, running from the slow pack, not surprisingly clocked the fastest time.
Morpeth took the team event from Chester Le Street, who now lead the table by 2 points.
Gateshead's Lauren Roche, running from the fast pack, won the Junior Womens' race from clubmate Sigourney Bell, the pair leading Gateshead to a team victory.
Sunderland's Michael Wilson, the County 800m champion, also gained victory from the fast pack, in the Under 13 Boys' race.
Morpeth newcomer, Faye Kankowski, who has impressed in Schools events, easily won the Under 15 Girls' race.
Jake Archer of Sunderland was untroubled in winning the Under 17 Mens' event.
Jack Reed of Gosforth (Under 15 Boys) and Laura Wright of Durham (Under 13 Girls) were impressive winners of their respective races.

Additional Comments: Report reduced considerably. Reasonably bright day. Course was slippy in parts. Frost/patched snow early on, but thawing fast and very slushy later especially on side roads. Results courtesy of the Binghams. 298 finishers in SM event (last time: 59:51). SW 80 (47:20) and JW 17 (41:39). Several runners wore the wrong number (not sure why this happened ?) and it looks like they were disqualified (later reinstated). I think there are errors in U15 Girls' race as I am sure Elswick fielded more than one runner. Two exclusives: Dan Samuels has retired from Athletics and Charmaine Porter (must have dropped out here), has joined Jarrow & Hebburn. Heaton's other counters were: 26 L Roe 33:08 (11th fastest); 42 A Roberts 38:35; 50 L Smith 36:17. SW: 17 J Friend 29:42; 24 J Zoppi.

North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League.
Blakeston School, Stockton.  Sun. 8th Feb.
New Marske athletes dominated the Senior Mens' event at yesterday's penultimate North Yorkshire and South Durham Harrier League fixture at Blakeston School, Stockton.
Unable to defend the North Eastern Counties Road Race Championship, due to cancellation, on Saturday, the Cleveland club turned out in force here.
Junior International Ricky Stevenson, led throughout on the testing four lap course, the distance of the circuit being reduced because of the frozen underfoot conditions.
Stevenson came home 82secs ahead of clubmate Dominic Shaw, with Andrew Wiles another 31secs adrift in 3rd place.
Stevenson who recently won the North of England Junior title, was not the only Area champion on view as brothers Josh and Dan Schofield of Scarborough, who won the Under 15 and Under 17 titles at St Helens, were successful in their respective events.
For good measure, elder sister Helena took third place in the Senior Womens' race.
As expected Middlesbrough's Carolyn Summersgill won the latter event, by a wide margin from Hartlepool veteran, Tracey Waller.
A day earlier, Summersgill was successful in the snow in the Albert Park 5km at Middlesbrough.
Yorkshire champion, Maddy Winzer was an impressive winner of the Under 15 Girls' race.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather was fine but got very cold as meeting progressed. Frozen course at start, churned up later. Dan Schofield tried to match Stevenson early on but paid for it slightly. He was with Shaw until pulling away late on 3rd lap, on way to finish.  No Male veterans in first 15, but will add extra results later.  Looked like a larger SM field than normal. Wondering why Winzer did not compete in N York Schools Champs ?  Further info (AW results): SM: Team: 1 New Marske 52; 2 Loftus & Whitby 110  SW: Team: 1 Loftus & Whitby 40; 2 Middlesbrough Mandale 54; 3 Darlington 77.
