Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Prudhoe High School. Sat. 1st March.
The final fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League was held in extremely windy conditions at Prudhoe on Saturday, but there was some exciting battles for the League titles.
As expected Sunderland won the Senior Mens' Division 1 title for the 10th successive year, though they were beaten on the day by Gateshead. For the Wearsiders, Tom Doughty (not competing here) took the Overall Veterans' Individual award. Elswick took 2nd place ahead of Durham City.
Morpeth won a close contest for the Division 2 championship from Heaton, with Mark Brown, who clocked the fastest time in 8th place, taking the Senior Individual title.
Birtley won the Division 3 Trophy from Gateshead.
In the Senior Womens' race for the league title, Heaton narrowly defeated Sunderland to take the  Trophy, for the first time. The pair were level before this fixture, and with two runners in the first four Sunderland looked set for victory. However, with the Newcastle club closing in four athletes before the Wearsiders' third counter, victory was gained by 2pts.
In what was a good day for fast pack runners, Donna James took the individual honours, and also retained the Veterans' Overall Trophy.
Kim Simpson in 2nd place won the Senior competition.
Rachael Lundgren of Gosforth (Under 15) and Steph Bruce (Under 13) won their races from the fast pack and also won the Individual competition, Lundgren for the second consecutive year.
This feat was matched by Marc Newby in the Under 15 Boys' race.
Last year's Under 15 champion, Tristan Venus of Tynedale, took the Under 17 title this time. On the day Venus finished 2nd from the fast pack behind  Louis Batista of Gosforth.
Adam Harrington of Morpeth, absent on this occasion, won the Under 13 championship. Clubmate Jonny Nisbet was fastest on the day finishing 2nd to Tom Johnson of Sunderland.
Northern champion Mary Ferrier of Gateshead won the Junior Women's race from the fast pack and Deborah Oakley of Morpeth (3rd) gained the Individual title.
Other team honours went to Gateshead (Under 13 and Under 15 Girls), Morpeth (Under 13 Boys), Jarrow and Hebburn (Under 15 Boys), and Houghton took both Junior Women and Under 17 Mens' titles.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, but under heading relating to Liz Yelling. Sunny early on (clouds later) and dry. Got colder and wind got stronger, as meeting progressed. Course fairly dry. Thanks to Binghams for excellent results service throughout season. Also for very quick final standings results. 255 finishers SM (254 Denis Young 50:58; 255 Patrick Kelly 54:53). 58 finishers SW (last time 2@38:39). Only 2 runners in U15B slow pack, 17 finishers (U17M) and only listed 7 (all fast pack) in JW race. Apologies to Mark Smith (SM winner) who I overlooked in report. Not sure how races developed as courses were hidden. I understand Louise Noble went off course when holding a 50m lead, and got back in 5th position.  This would not have affected final result.  Some serious thought needs to be given to Senior Womens' Pack promotion and overall handicapping (especially SW) for next season. Too many fast pack runners seem to be getting through. Congratulaions to Heaton Womens' team and also Senior Men for promotion. George Patterson caused a slight scare when he thought only 5 Morpeth runners had started (including B Cordes). However, 7 finished (excluding BC). All Heaton performances on HH website.

Sunderland Harriers extended their advantage at the top of the Division 1 table by winning the Senior Mens' event at the penultimate Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture at Wrekenton on Saturday.
The Wearsiders, going for a tenth successive title, now hold a 4 point lead over Elswick, with Durham a further 2 points behind in third.
Morpeth hold a narrow lead in a highly competitive Division 2 championship.
Alyn Woodward comfortably won the individual race from North Shields Poly clubmate, Michael Dawson who moved through from the medium pack. Brian Rushworth of Sunderland clocked the fastest time, finishing 8th from the fast pack.
Alyson Dixon of Chester Le Street quickly moved through the field to win the Senior Womens' race, for the second successive year. The longer distance meant that ten of the first fifteen home were like Dixon, from the fast pack.
Chester Le Street won the team event, while 3rd placed Sunderland now join Heaton at the top of the table.
The other Women winners Deborah Oakley of Morpeth (Under 17), Sigourney Bell of Gateshead (Under 15) and Chamaine Porter of Sunderland (Under 13) were

The latter also won the corresponding race in 2007.

North Eastern Counties' A.A Road Relay Championship.
Watergate Park, Gateshead.  Sat. 9th Feb.
In one of the closest contests yet, a New Marske squad consisting of four Juniors gained the first Cleveland victory for many years, to take the Royal Signals Trophy for the regional Road Relay Championship, at Watergate Park, Gateshead on Saturday..
For good measure Ricky Stevenson's 4th leg proved to be the fastest of the day.
Defending champions Sunderland led on the first leg with Patrick Martin coming home 25secs ahead of Lewis Gamble-Thompson of New Marske with Gosforth's Matthew Nicholson in third (10:17). Jon Taylor moved Morpeth from 5th to 1st on leg 2, with Sunderland 26secs adrift in 2nd and New Marske a further 13secs behind in third.
Brian Rushworth regained the lead for Sunderland on leg 3, gaining a further 11secs on Russell Best of New Marske, with Morpeth now in a distant third position.
Mark Hood extended the advantage on leg 4 with Morpeth's Chris Sampson moving into 2nd place.
Ricky Stevenson, taking over in 3rd place for the Teessiders, soon made inroads into the 74secs deficit on the leader, and after overhauling Morpeth, took the lead in the final 50m of his leg.
A close race was now expected with New Marske leading by 3secs from Sunderland with Morpeth's last leg runner, Ian Hudspith having to make up a 49secs deficit in third.
Both Dominic Shaw of New Marske and Steve Potts of Sunderland were well watched on the final leg, with Shaw, returning to competition after injury, holding off his rival by 2secs. Hudspith finished only another 6secs behind in third.
With the conditions bright, mild and little wind, it was not surprising that all of last year's inaugural course records (this was 2nd time race was held at this venue), set in cold, wet and windy conditions, were torn apart.
Sunderland gained some consolation when they regained the Veterans' title.
The Wearsiders held off the  challenge of Morpeth, with 2007 champions, Elswick in third place.
Phil Walker's fifth leg when he lifted Morpeth from 4th to 1st was the fastest of the day.
Chester Le Street won the Womens' title for the third successive year. The team of Kathryn Waugh, Fiona Burnie, Alyson Dixon and Maxine Czarnecka led all the way with Morpeth, through Laura Weghtman overhauling their B team on the final leg to take second place.
Elswick in 4th place took the Counties' bronze medals.
Chester Le Street's winning squad also posted the fastest 4 times, with Waugh the quickest.

Inter County Schools Cross Country.
Acklam Grange School, Middlesbrough.  Sat. 2nd Feb.
Durham proved to be the strongest overall team at Saturday's Schools Inter Counties' match at Acklam Grange School, Middlesbrough, winning six of the eight team events.
The partial closure of the A66 due to adverse weather conditions caused the withdrawal, of the Cumbria team. North Yorkshire  contested this annual fixture after a lengthy absence.
In temperatures that barely rose above zero,
Northern Under 17 silver medallist Philip Hurst of Durham gained victory  in the Senior Boys' race holding off the challenge of Cleveland's Russell Best.
Stacey Smith of Northumberland, the 2006 English Schools Intermediate 800m silver medallist, competing in her first Cross Country race for nearly 2 years, again showed her excellent finishing speed, pulling away in the final 400m of the Senior Girls'  event, from team mate Gina Rutherford and Helen Gertig of Durham.
Jack Moore of Durham  won a hard fought Intermediate Boys' event from Northern Under 15 silver medallist Michael Priestley of Northumberland.
Kate Avery of Durham (Inter Girls) and Mark Shaw of Cleveland (Junior Boys) were untroubled in repeating their 2007 victories in their respective events.
Rachel Denton of Northumberland easily won the Junior Girls' race, while Robbie Loraine and Sophie Forster, dominated the Minor Boys and Minor Girls races, respectively.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Very cold but quite bright. Start and finish area frosty at start, but got muddy later. Main laps were quite muddy. No overall places given his time. I think some of better runners from North Yorkshire (team managed by Dave Pavers) were absent. Disappointing not to see one or two Cumbria stars (they looked to have one individual competing).
