Thought the Norwich Union GP at Birmingham (18th Feb), was disappointing compared to previous years. Money was surely wasted in bringing Carlo Sacramento (out of form for a few years now), to finish last in 3000m. North East performances were: 2M: 8 S Hepples 8:45.46 (1 M Genetti (Eth) 8:14.28). Saucony English National Cross Country Championships.
Cofton Park, Birmingham.  Sat. 19th Feb.
Kate Avery of Shildon stole the honours for the region, taking the Under 13 Girls' title, at Saturday's Saucony National Cross Country Championships, at Cofton Park, Birmingham.
The venue adjacent to the MG Rover plant, was being used for the first time for this event and the course, though hilly, proved very popular. Although it was cold and windy, the weather stayed bright and underfoot conditions were good.
Avery, who is the current North Eastern and Northern champion, broke way from the leading group of four at the halfway point, crossing the finishing line 3 secs ahead of her nearest rival, Camilla Freeman of Dulwich..
On what was on the whole a disappointing day for the North East, Sunderland took the bronze medals in the Under 13 Boys' team event.
The Wearsiders, also the North Eastern and Northern team champions, were led home by Nathan Reed in 9th position closely followed by James Chapman (10th). They were ably supported by Liam Wintrip (22nd) and Scott Younger (99th).
Chester Le Street, the 2003 champions, finished 4th in the Senior Womens' team event. Morag McDonnell, came home in a hcreditable 9th position, and Alyson Dixon ran well to finish 19th.  Windsor's Hayley Yelling, the European bronze medallist, was an oustanding individual winner adding to her 2003 victory. Morpeth just missed out on medals in the Under 17 Mens' and Junior Womens' races, finishing in 4th place. Jonathan Young led home their Under 17 challenge in 9th position. Middlesbrough's track speciallist Jon Taylor finished strongly to take 5th place, missing out by 3secs on an individual medal. Northern champion, Aiveen Fox was the leading counter for the Morpeth Junior squad, finishing in 10th position.
Glynn Tromans of Coventry Coventry easily won the Senior Mens' race, joining an exclusive list of three-times winners of the event. Tromans, the defending champion, was also successful in 2000. No North East athlete was prominent, though former Durham University student and Midland champion, James Walsh finished 6th.

Additional Comments: Most of copy used. Apologies for slight error in that Hayley Yelling is of course, European champion (was thinking of Jo Pavey). Good competition, though venue was a long way from North East. Seemed nearer Bristol than N Birmingham (Sutton Coldfield area) (by travel time anyway). Senior Mens' and Under 13 Girls' results courtesy of race-results website. Apologies for any omissions, but there is a time factor plus "double vision" involved. 1316 finishers in Senior Mens' race (last time: 85:47) and 451 Women (60:14). Distances seemed about right. Congratulations to Kate Avery and Sunderland team, whose score should read 160. Younger was not included in original results, their next counter finishing 125th. Also to Saltwell, the region's first Senior team. Not sure but cannot remember Salford taking Senior title, before. Morpeth only finished 5 athletes. I think Mark Brown was around 100th before dropping out.
The region's turn-out was not great especially in younger age-groups. However, the North East's overall strength seems to have dropped drastically. Other Placings included:  SM: 156 P Newton 43:00; 190 J Orange 43:35; 367 T Wall 46:00; 721 K Wood 50:21; 786 M Brooks 51:23; 799 B Groves 51:38; 962 T Hanson 54:15; 1285 R Laverick 66:21
SW: 154 S Heatley 35:19; 247 C Robson 37:56; 268 L Brown 38:50; 286 A Banner 39:24.
Heaton fielded 2 runners: Allen Mulliss (1187th in 59:13) and George Routledge (1315th in 81:54).
Footnote: Since this was written, I have heard of the sad death of Ray Laverick, who passed away on the coach, while returning from Birmingham on Sunday (20th).

Additional Comments: Only results sent. Good race in U15G sprint, but thought Welsh won. Good standard also in U15B Hurdles. These races would have got mention if meeting was on weekend. As usual only a small entry, though quite a lot of male Long Jumpers. Not many Shot Putters though. Tyne Breen threw personal best distance, competing as a guest. Bob Smoult clocked 7.8secs in B 50m (actually defeating someone). Lianne Brown seemed to be meeting organiser.

North Eastern Counties A.A Road Relay Championships.
Saltwell Park, Gateshead.  Sat. 12th Feb.
Morpeth Harriers won their 8th successive North Eastern Counties Road Relay Championship for the Royal Signals Trophy, at Saltwell Park, on Saturday. Sunderland took the Veterans title, for the 4th successive year, while Gateshead snatched a late victory in the Womens' race. Although dry, the wind grew stronger as the race progressed, and it came as no surprise that most of the fastest times were achieved early in the duration of the event. Running on a new traffic free but hilly circuit within the Park grounds, Morpeth were never headed after Dan Samuels' opening leg, which proved to be fastest of the day. He was closely followed home by Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly, Steve Horn of Elswick, Mark Hood of Sunderland, and Lewis Timmins of Gosforth. Martin Scaife increased Morpeth's lead to 45secs over Gosforth on leg 2, before Ivan Hollingsworth, Mark Hudspith, Mark Brown and Chris Sampson extended the advantage to over 2mins at the finish. A young Gosforth squad finished in 2nd place, with North Shields Poly taking the bronze medals.
Third across the line however, was the Sundeland Veterans team, who won their category by a massive 4mins 15secs over North Shields Poly. Les Atkinson was a narrow leader for Morpeth on leg 1 ahead of Dave Ellis, before Brian Rushworth, with the fastest time, took Sunderland into the lead on leg 2. Dave Robertson, Paul Collins, Steve Coxon and Rob Rush increased the advantage. The Sunderland B team took third place.
The outcome of the Womens' race, was a lot closer, with Gateshead passing long-time leaders, Jarrow and Hebburn, on the final leg. Claire Simpson clocked the fastest time for Jarrow, on leg 1, with Angela Hunter and Sarah Evans maintaining the advantage. Gateshead helped by opening legs from Northern Indoor 800m champions, Phillipa McCrea (Senior) and Sam Hart (Under 20), followed by Lisa Huston, were 37secs adrift, before Claire Harrod on leg 4, passed Georgia Campbell with 300m remaining, to take gold. North Eastern Counties A.A Indoor Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sun. 6th Feb.
There were some close finishes in yesterday's rearranged North Eastern Counties A.A Indoor Sprint Championships, at Monkton Stadium. Rabah Yusuf, the North of England 400m champion, caught long-time leader and Border clubmate Peter Vickers, in the dying strides to win the Senior Mens' 60m. Another race decided on the photo finish was the Under 15 Boys' 60m, where Northern silver medallist, John Summers of Gateshead, just held off Middlesbrough's Joseph Corrigan. Last year's Under 15 champion, Yusuf Aliu of Middlesbrough, moved up an age-group to win the Under 17 60m, while clubmate Chris Jones retained the Under 20 title. In a good quality Under 20 Womens' event, Jenny Graham of North Shields Poly, 3rd in the Northern 200m, gained victory, while Faye Winspear of Middlesbrough won a hotly contested Under 17 event. Another close finish came in the Under 15 Girls' race, with Northern runner-up, Nicola Pearson (the defending champion), holding off the challenge of Gateshead clubmate, Laura Welsh. Neil Flannery of Gateshead (also a Northern silver medallist) won the Under 15 60m Hurdles, with clubmate  Lauren Dewdney an impressive winner of the Under 17 60m Hurdles.

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 7th February 2005).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Some good competition but not a good turn-out of entries. Elaine Smith was sole Senior lady, but only three entered. A recurrence of an old injury caused the non appearance of Kirsty Thomas. Her coach, Bill Read also pointed out that his granddaughter Jessica broke the record in the U13G 60. The old  record was 8.5secs, by Catherine Turner (where is she now ?), in 2000. Unfortunately no records were listed in the programme and I could not find the 2004 listings. Lawren Dewdney just missed Gemma Fergusson's old figures, and would have got record on manual timing.  The photo finish showed that the timekeeping positions at this stadium, are not very satisfactory. Apologies but should read Niall Flannery (too much of a hurry). Bob Smoult clocked 9.24secs in 60m heat.

Inter Counties Schools Cross Country
Sedbergh School, Cumbria.  Sat. 5th Feb.
Lewis Timmins of Northumberland, comfortably won the Senior Boys' event, at Saturday's annual Inter Counties' Schools Cross Counry match, at Sedbergh School. In the wet conditions on a hilly and muddy course, Timmins came home ahead of team mate Jonathan Young. However, a strong Durham squad led by third placed, Sean Hall took the team title. Julia Orr of Durham won the Senior Girls' event, with second-placed Mary Ferrier leading Northumberland to a team victory. Ricky Stevenson of Cleveland was the easiest winner of the day, coming home over 1min ahead of his rivals in the Intermediate event. Cumbria's Laura Park inflicted a rare defeat on Durham's Kate Avery, finishing strongly to win the Junior Girls' race by 10m. The Fell Running experience of Norhumberland's Anghared Porteous proved useful, as she won the Intermediate Girls' event from Stacey Smith, the pair leading Norhumberland to another team victory. Ross Murray of Northumberland won the Junior Boys' event, while Jamie Robson (Northumberand) and Sigorney Bell (Durham) were easy winners of the minor races.

(Newcasle Journal:  Mon. 7th February 2005).

Addiional Comments: Most of info used. Was promised full results by e-mail same day, but not received until 8.30pm Sunday. Therefore only results I could scribble down were used. Due to very wet conditions the results from first race (MB), were illegible when I got home. Impressive run by Park, who led for first 1km, before Avery took over and gained a 10m lead.
Laura's father Steven informs me that apart from winning the Cumbrian (AA) title, running as a guest, she is a member of Ellensborough A.C, is in her first year of competitive Cross Country, was 5th in U14 British/Irish Fell Running Champs in only her 2nd hill race, and is the Cumbria Schools champion (these were held at Kirkby Stephen on 15th Jan). Adrian Holliday the Senior Boys winner, decided not to compete here. A good meeting, which I think, Kendal A.C helped to organise (there seemed a lot of familiar faces among helpers). Very wet at times, but also some bright sunshine. Muddy especially near finish. Course was on side of hill and very tough. A long way to travel for this fixture, taking just short of 2hrs from Newcastle (both regular routes). Timmins and Orr retained their titles, and Natalie Dawson was absent due to a hospital appointment. Delyth James was ill. Looks like Northumberland retained Overall trophy, but not 100% certain.

Veterans A.A North East Cross Country Championships.
Monkseaton High School, Whitley Bay.  Sat. 5th Feb.
Brian Rushworth of Sunderland took his third successive Veterans' North East title, at Saturday's annual Championships, at Monkseaton High School. Rushworth, feeling the after effects of losing a shoe, in the Northern Championship at Consett 7 days earlier, was content to hold back until the second of the three laps, before pulling away from clubmate, Dave Robertson. Leading M45 athlete, Paul Merrison of Wallsend crossed the line in 3rd place.
Donna James of Elvet, an excellent 28th in her event at Consett, was the overall winner of the Womens' race, taking the W40 title, with W35 champion, Debbie Hales of Durham finishing in 2nd place.
