Additional Comments: Results only sent. Went home without result of Under 13 Boys' 50m, but could not contact Chris Betts, to obtain this. Not sure what club Nick Little competes for ? He was down for Tynedale here, and Gateshead previous meeting. No club for R Thompson (Under 13 Girls' High jump). Poor entry (again) in Senior/Junior Women. Not sure if Sophie Dewell is Under 20 or not ? She was accompanied by Bob Smoult in 50m (he clocked 7.6).

Additional Comments: Only results sent. An enjoyable low-key meeting. Conditions dry, cool, breezy, sunny at times, but firmer underfoot. Some absentees, as there were athletes not wishing to run the day after Inter Counties Champs, and others at National Catholic Schools Champs. Nine get selected to run at National Champs, which are at Liverpool on March 2nd (the middle of a very busy programme for youngsters). In Under 15 event, Marc Docherty sprinted away from Richard Cunningham, only to ease down 10m from home, to be pipped on the line.

Veterans Athletic Association - North East Cross Country Championships.
Shibdon Pond, Blaydon. Sat. 9th. Feb.

British Veterans' Steeplechase champion, Paul Merrison of Wallsend, won a hotly contested Veterans Athletic Association - North East Cross Country title, at Shipdon Park, Blaydon, on Saturday. Durham's Steve Everett forced the pace from the start on the four lap course, but could never drop his main rivals, Merrison and Dave Robertson of Sunderland. In the windy and muddy conditions, Merrison's superior track speed told on the final lap, as he pulled away to a 10 second victory over Everett. Robertson was close behind in third place, and was joined by Over 45 winner, John Watson as Sunderland took the team awards. The Wearsiders, led by category winner, Keith Elliott also took the Over 50 title. Blaydon's Bill Robinson, runner-up in the blizzard at the 1972 National Cross Country Championship, at Sutton Coldfield, won the Over 55 category. Phil Lancaster of North Shields Poly, defeated defending champion, Walter Ryder of Morpeth, to win the Over 60 category, whilst Morpeth retained the team trophy. Ian Barnes of Darlington won yet another gold medal in the Over 65 age-group. Current British champion, Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee, retained her Womens' Over 40 title, easily defeating Over 35 champion, Caroline Ratcliff of Durham. Houghton and Peterlee retained the team trophy. International, Val Hancock of Durham, took the Over 55 title, whilst Gosforth's Christine Lee, gained victory in her debut in the Over 60 category.

Additional Comments: All of report used, but in small print. Denis Field did not turn up, as he was driving Tim to Inter Counties ! The Woods compiled results but they took a long time (apologies if any mistakes, as it was nore or less, work them out yourself). A problem was having all Men (up to M65), in one race (74 in fact). L Miller (NSP) was only Woman, not to get a medal, but the original result sheet was left behind, so they have no details of her performance. Rob Hand was due to make his Veterans' debut, but was a late call-up for NE Counties' XC team (his first for the region, though he has competed for Cumbria before). Good run by Phil Lancaster. Reference to Bill Robinson, was that this was the first time I have needed to mention him in a report. Bernie Cordes (M65) stopped with stitch on Lap 1 and was well behind Reg Checkley, after first circuit. He pulled back deficit on Ian Barnes, throughout rest of race. Ted Joynson turned up for a 1.00 start (it was 11.30), so there was something to be thankful for. Only four Heaton Harriers (Allen Mulliss and George Routledge were others). George was last home. Sid Robson did not run, and Ted was glad he did not take part, as running conditions were difficult. The hilly zig-zag near start (especially four times), makes the course quite hard.

Reebok Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
Wollaton Park, Nottingham. Sat. 9th. Feb.

The North East were unable to hold on to the Overall Trophy, at Saturday's Reebok Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Nottingham, finishing joint second along with old rivals Hampshire, behind a stong Essex squad. The North East gained one gold medal, taking the Under 17 Mens' title, for the fourth time in 7 years. Ryan McLeod led home the counters in 8th place just ahead of Chris Lamb. The pair were ably supported by Norman Younger and Kirk Wilson. Apart from Ian Hudspith's excellent run in the Senior Mens' race, the North East's only other individual medal came from the ever dependable Charlotte Wickham, who finished third in the Under 17 Womens' race, behind Charlotte Moore of Dorset. The North East, gold medallists in 2001, had to be content with the silver medals this time. Silver medals also came from the Junior Men, Under 13 Boys and Under 15 Girls' teams. The Senior Mens' squad, successful last year, took the bronze medals.

Additional Comments: All of brief report used, though in small print. Did not mention World XC Trials, as I understand Dave Martin was supposed to be covering them, though nothing appeared. Results were advertised to appear on ukathetics website, but as at 3.00 pm on Monday (11th), they had still not appeared. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. They were not on onrunning website either, at this time. Available results courtesy of Kevin Carr. Those performances not used, are where there were no prominent NE Individuals or teams. Conditions were windy but dry, and it seemed a bit firmer underfoot, as of late. Good runs also from veterans, Heather Robinson, who was just outside first fifty and of course Rob Hand. Andy Caine (Senior Men) and Danielle Leigh (Junior Women), were at least two non-finishers. Jill Scott went to Brighton afterwards, to play for Sunderland Womens' Football team (they lost 1-0). Saw last part of Sky Coverage. They only showed the leading individuals. Judging by the way they covered the Under 17 Mens' finish, it appeared that Kirk Wilson crossed the line in the first ten. No further comments re the politics of this event.

Durham Pine North Eastern Harrier League.
Farringdon School, Sunderland. Sat. 2nd. Feb.

Sunderland defeated league leaders Blaydon by one place, in the Senior Mens' Division 1 Championship, at Saturday's penultimate Durham Pine North Eastern Harrier League fixture, at Farringdon. This leaves Sunderland, the defending champions, only one point behind their rivals as they approach the final meeting at Prudhoe, next month. The Wearsiders were led home by race-winner, Steve Potts, who overcame the windy conditions, to gain a victory of over 1.5 minutes, from Steve Clark of North Shields Poly. Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street, gained the fastest time on the fourth occasion this season, moving through to sixth place, holding off the strong challenge of Durham's Rob Hand. Jarrow's Claire Smallwood, returned to winning form defeating top veteran, Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee, in the Womens' race. League leaders Durham City, extended their advantage at the top, by winning the team title. Fields in the younger age-groups, were decimated due to a clash with the Schools' event. Despite this, North Eastern champion Laura Wright of Blackhill, still defeated area silver medallist Lynsey Rawlings of Blaydon, in the Under 13 Girls' race. Although the turn-out was small, Morpeth's Chris Aynsley, became another fast pack winner, in the Under 17 Mens' race.

George Routledge was last (one place behind Ray Laverick, who thankfully must have recovered from Derby). Senior Mens' winner, was good several years ago, and has had "drink problems" in the meantime. Nice to see Claire and Angela back in action. I think Lynsey Rawlings will have blown her chances, of going to the English Schools' Championships, by competing here.

Inter Counties Schools Cross Country Meeting.
King James College, Bishop Auckland. Sat. 2nd. Feb.

Durham, easily retained the Overall Trophy, at Saturday's Inter Counties Schools' Cross Country match, at King James College, Bishop Auckland. Durham won five of the six team events, and provided three individual winners. Although the wind had eased and the rain had stopped, competitors still faced a tough test on a hilly and very muddy course. Durham were particularly strong in a highly competitve Senior Boys' event, with Chris Lamb, recovering from an injury, which kept him out of last week's Northern Championships at Derby, just holding off teammates Norman Younger and Richard Kemp. With five of the first seven finishers, Durham will be strong candidates for medals at the National Championships, at Chelmsford next month. Charlotte Wickham reversed last weekend's Northern placings with Durham's Rosie Smith (the pair took the minor medals in the Under 17 race), pulling well away from her rival on the final lap. Wickham, who allowed Smith to gain a 30m advantage at one stage, provided a largely disappointing Northumberland squad, with their only individual victory of the day. In an exciting Intermediate Boys' race, Durham's Anthony Harvey, dropped his main rival, Kirk Wilson of Northumberland, in the closing stages. Sarah Tunstall was the sole Cumbria winner, in the Intermediate Girls' race, comfortably holding off the challenge of Durham's Laura McKernan. Cleveland's Scott Dixon, gained the largest victory of the day, running away from his rivals, in the Junior Boys' race. The improving Claire Harrison of Sunderland, impressively won the Junior Girls' event. Second-placed Emma Nesbitt, led home Northumberland, to the only team victory, not achieved by the hosts.

Additional Comments: Only results used. Results courtesy of Pat Narey. No official times, but I took the first twenty in each race. Disappointed with Northumberland performance. They started well winning Junior Girls' event, but that was about all. Jonathon Graham dropped out in Senior race, but was well down field at time. I think some Senior runners were not full out ! Durham Junior Boys' champion (a footballer), did not compete, and will probably not go to Chelmsford. Jill Scott, who missed County Championship, because of football commitments, asked to run here, but was refused. Junior Boys' winner goes to Lawrence Jackson School, and occasionally runs for Mandale. Cumbrian Senior champion Ben Collins, did not compete as his leg is in plaster. He goes to Sedburgh School, comes from York, and competes for a club down there (Nestle Rowntrees ?). Morag McDonnell is head of English at College. She has her name on a classroom door.
