In the cold and dry conditions, the Tipton Harrier was content to follow early leader Lewis Timmins of Morpeth, before pulling away after the opening Mile. The margin of victory was 11secs, with another Morpeth Harrier, Mark Brown finishing in 3rd position.
Schools Cross Country International, Kate Avery of Shildon passed 2007 winner, Justina Heslop of Clapham at the halfway point in the Womens' race, coming home 12secs ahead of her rival. Avery finished in an excellent 13th position overall.

Saltwell Harriers Road Races.
Saltwell Park.  Sun. 21st Dec.
Former Elswick Harrier, Ryan McLeod now running in the Tipton colours repeated his 2007 victory in yesterday's popular re-Christmas Saltwell 10km Road Race.
McLeod soon headed the field of 260 runners, closely followed by Morpeth's Nick Swinburn, silver medallist in the recent North East Counties' Cross Country Championships. They were chased by Morpeth's Lewis Timmins, on vacation from his American University and 2006 winner, Chris Parr of Gateshead.
McLeod had opened up a 30m over Swinburn after the second of the three laps. The nature of the course clearly suited Swinburn, who won a Fell Race 7 days earlier, as he caught and passed his rival moving into a 10m lead with 1km remaining. However, McLeod's stronger finish prevailed in the final section in the Park grounds, as he pulled away to a 9secs victory over Swinburn. The pair were also well inside McLeod's 2007 course record of 31mins 27secs.
Timmins finished in a distant 3rd place ensuring Morpeth retained the team title. Stewie Bell of Chester Le Street was the leading veteran in 10th position, while local club, Low Fell won the Veterans' team event.
Tynedale's Sonia Morley was a surprise winner of the Womens' race. The 42-year-old overhauled early leader and North Eastern Cross Country champion, Mary Ferrier of Gateshead on the second lap, pulling away to a 44secs victory over her rival. Morley also bettered the Veterans' course record by over 2mins. Dawn Nagazina, the Canadian girlfriend of Timmins, wearing the Morpeth colours, finished 3rd. Heaton took the team title.
Marcus Cram of Morpeth, winner of the Under 15 race in 2007, this time strode to victory in the Under 17 event, taking 19secs off the previous best figures.
Hannah Nagel of Chester Le Street won the corresponding Womens' race.
The Jarrow pair of Shaun Barras and Mark Bunn won the Under 15 and Under 13 Boys' races, respectively.
Rebecca Oran of Elswick (Under 15 Girls) and Lydia Turner of Birtley (Under 13 Girls) won their respective events.

North Eastern Counties A.A Cross Country Championships.
Cardinal Hume Catholic School, Wrekenton, Gateshead.  Sat. 13th Dec.
Sunderland Harrier Mark Hood won his third consecutive Senior title at Saturday's 103rd North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships, at Cardinal Hume Catholic School, Wreckenton.
Conditions as in 2007, were atrocious, wet and windy, with the temperature dropping throughout the meeting.
Hood soon headed the field on the testing 3 lap course, with former Junior champion NIck Swinburn of Morpeth the only athlete to raise any challenge. The pair were well clear after lap 1, when Hood started to pull away from his rival. The winning margin was 29 secs, while Andrew Wiles of New Marske, finishing in an isolated third position.
Morpeth Harriers retained the team title from Gateshead, with Elswick finishing in a surprise third position.
Mary Ferrier of Gateshead, the Junior champion in 2006 and 2007, stepped up an age-group to win her first Senior Womens' title. Her clubmate Charlotte Wickham (2nd in 2007), led for most of the race, before Ferrier's usually strong finish again prevailed. Maxine Czarnecka of Chester Le Street finished 3rd, leading her club to a successful defence of the team title.
Junior International, Ricky Stevenson of New Marske easily repeated his 2007 victory in the Under 20 race, winning by over 2mins from clubmate Dominic Shaw.
With five runners in the first twelve, New Marske successfully defended the team title.
Kate Avery of Shidon, was an emphatic winner of the combined Under 17 and Under 20 Womens' race. Still in the younger age-group Avery, the defending champion, led all the way, to win by 32secs, from the Under 20 gold medallist, Jessica Russon of New Marske. Gateshead retained the team title.
Durham's Michael Grimes won the Under 17 Mens' race.
Darlington's Nicole Burlinson comfortably won the Under 15 Girls' race from Shildon's Fiona Higgin. Mark Shaw of New Marske easily retained the Under 15 Boys' title.
Anna Fawcett of Chester Le Street won the Under 13 Girls' race from Birtley's Sophie Forster.

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Vera, Brenda and Ogles. I have to admit I had to go inside after SM event, due to adverse conditions. I was not alone as Jim Alder, Mick Groves and Bill Woods did the same. Underfoot conditions around finish area, wet rather than heavy. 183 finishers in SM event (last time: P Kelly 1:29:28). SW 62 (54:15). SM positions in first ten mostly unchanged throughout race, but Moses made up a few places on 2nd lap. Overall quality at front of field poorer than normal. Further SM team places: 7 South Shields 413; 8 Alnwick 448; 9 North Shields Poly 470; 10 Claremont 488 (16 teams completed). SW: 7 Wallsend 92; 8 Middlesbrough & Cleveland 109 (10 teams completed). Gateshead also won Overall Trophy for Women. In U20W race, E Williams (M'bro) finished 7th (25:02) but was disqualified for wearing Kirsty Legg's number. Kirsty is sidelined at the moment. A disgraceful turn-out from Heaton. James Buis (an excellent run) backed up by Allen Mulliss (168th in 66:02). (GR running in Majorca Half Marathon clocking 2:16). No Senior Women (J Zoppi has knee injury and C Buis working).

49th Blyth Sands Handicap.
Sun. 7th Dec.
Lesley Miller of North Shields Poly improved on her third placing in 2007, to win yesterday's 49th Blyth Sands Handicap, ran on a return route from South Beach, Blyth to Seaton Sluice.

Cath Young of Blyth, 2nd in 2007, finished third, starting off the same time as the winner.
Ash Henderson of the host club, clocked the fastest overall time finishing in 8th place off scratch.
Blyth retained the team title.
