Ripon Jolly Holly Jog 10km.
Sun. 30th Dec.
Ricky Stevenson won yesterday's Ripon
Holly Jog 10km, for the third year in succession leading New
Marske to a clean sweep of the individual placings.
Stevenson, who has represented Great
Britain as a Junior on both Cross Country and Track in the past
eighteen months, made short work of the difficult new course consisting
mainly of of muddy grassland, coming home 2mins 30secs clear of
his nearest rival. This was despite wearing Road Running shoes.
The winner had recently clocked a fast
time for 3000m Indoors at Sheffield.
Lewis Gamble-Thompson took second
place ahead of Shaun O'Grady.
For good measure Mark Gamble-Thompson
of New Marske was the leading official veteran in 5th position.
York youngster Becky Pentry repeated
her 2006 victory in the Womens' race with Middlesbrough's Carolyn
Summersgill 1min 27secs adrift in second place.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 31st December 2007).
Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather bright (had been
showery) and quite mild. Little wind. Course being described as "very
muddy" seemed to be, on the whole, as quick as the old one. The only
problem was that walk from Cricket club to start, was a lot more than
"advertised" 5mins (nearer 15mins).
Results courtesy of Ripon RR website (by 4.00pm) and some early info
from Roger Norton (in attendance). 472 finishers (last time: 1:34:58).
Heaton performances were 158 A Mulliss 49:20 and by two newcomers (to
me anyway): 79 S Price 43:51; 300 S Walker (L) 56:31.
Woodlawn
Christmas Pudding Run.
Whitley Bay. Wed. 26th Dec.
Elswick's Ryan McLeod reversed 2006
placings with Morpeth's Nick McCormick to win this ever-popular Boxing
Day event.
In the milder conditions, McLeod who
was successful here in
2005, and three days earlier won the Saltwell 10km, fought off the
early challenge of McCormick pulling away from his rival after 2.5km.
The margin of victory was 11secs,
while track specialist Gavin Massingham of Sunderland finished in an
isolated third position.
Former Elswick Harrier, Justina
Heslop, now based in London, easily won the Womens' race from Gateshead
teenager Sigourney Bell.
Result. Distance 5.5km.

Saltwell
Harriers Road Races.
Saltwell Park, Gateshead. Sun.
23rd Dec.
Ryan McLeod of Elswick strode to an
emphatic victory at yesterday's annual Pre-Christmas Saltwell 10km Road
Race.
McLeod follows in the footsteps of
father, Mike who won this event 16 times.
In the bitterly cold conditions, the
Loughborough University student, recently 18th in the European Under 23
Cross Country Championship, soon headed the 260-strong field on the new
three-and-a-half lap course on the outskirts of Saltwell Park.
He was closely followed by Jon Taylor
of Morpeth and Chris Lamb of Chester Le Street but they soon lost
contact approaching the end of the first lap.
McLeod's winning margin was 43secs
over Taylor, with former winner Stewart Bell moving through to third
position, and taking the first Veterans' prize.
McLeod's winning time broke the
inaugural course record of Gateshead's Chris Parr by 32 secs.
Bell broke the veterans' record by
1min 28secs.
Taylor led Morpeth to the team title
from Elswick.
Wirral's Helen Lawrence also set new
figures in the Womens' race finishing in 25th position overall.
Lawrence took 44secs off the 2006
winning time, coming home with 24secs to spare.
Maxine Czarnecka and Tracey Laws took
the minor awards leading Chester Le Street to the team title.
Elswick's Yam Thiru was the leading
veteran in 6th.
Morpeth's Marcus Cram (Under 15 Boys),
Barry Maskell of Gateshead (Under 13 Boys) and Sophie Taylor of Birtley
(Under 13 Girls) set new records in their respective events. Sigourney
Bell of Gateshead matched her 2006 winning time in the Under 15
Girls' race.
Greg Ritchie of Jarrow and Hebburn and
Helen Gertig of Blaydon were successful in the Under 17 races.
Special mention goes to South Shields
Harrier Dave Whitmore, who has ran this race every time for the last 31
years. Dave, wearing No 1 for the occasion, finished 209th in 53mins
44secs and was the second Over 65 competitor to finish.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier
League.
Cramlington. Sat. 15th Dec.
Defending champions Sunderland, were
back on course to retain the Senior Mens' Division 1 title, winning the
team event in the second fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern
Harrier League fixture at a frostbound Cramlington Nature
Reserve on Saturday.
After an indifferent start in the
first fixture, the Wearsiders now lie fourth behind Elswick, South
Shields and Tynedale. Heaton only 2pts behind Sunderland on the day,
lead Morpeth by 1pt in Division 2. Sadly no Division 3 teams closed in.
Newcomer Kristopher Russell of Low
Fell was an easy winner of the individual event. Medium pack runners
Andrew Teate of Gateshead and Matthew Armstrong of Blaydon
finished 2nd and 4th, with former top Junior Richard Kemp leading
Sunderland home in third place. Mark Brown of Morpeth clocked the
fastest time finishing in 7th from the fast pack.
Kerry Matthew of Chester Le Street was
an emphatic winner of the Senior Womens' race from Helen Johnson of
Heaton. Fast pack runner, Aiveen Fox of Morpeth finished 3rd. North
Shields Poly won the team event from Tynedale and Heaton, who now share
the overall lead.
North Eastern champion, Mary Ferrier
of Gateshead clocked the fastest time in the Under 20 Womens' race
finishing 2nd to Gosforth's Emma Masson.
Liam Ayton of Durham was fastest
overall when winning the Under 15 Boys' race, while in the Under 13
event, regional champions Morpeth excelled with four runners in the
first five. Jonathan Nisbet was the individual winner and North Eastern
champion, Adam Harrington clocked the fastest time in 5th.
Gosforth's Rachael Lundgren again
clocked the fastest time, finishing 2nd in the Under 15 Girls'
race.

These courtesy of Janice Kaufman. Actually 9 heats of "mixed" 60m
races, but separated on official results. Bowles won heat 5. New North
Shields Poly recruit Emma Hastings was 2nd to Lawton in Ht 6 (8.7).
However, looking at races, first two in this heat were close, and
Bowle's margin of victory, did not seem as much as times suggest.

North Eastern Counties' A.A Cross
Country Championships.
Summerhill Centre, Hartlepool.
Sat. 8th Dec.
Mark Hood of Sunderland easily
retained the Senior Mens' title at Saturday's North Eastern Counties'
A.A Cross Country Championships, dropping the leading group of six
athletes on the second of the four laps.
There was driving rain throughout the
afternoon making the going very heavy in parts, and temperatures
had dropped drastically after the previous few days.
In a close battle for second place,
Chris Sampson of Morpeth fought off the challenge of 10-times-champion,
Brian Rushworth of Sunderland, to take the silver medal.
Sampson led Morpeth to the team title
defeating defending champions, Sunderland.
Hood has now gained medals in the
championships, either individual or team, every year since he won the
Under 13 title in the 1990's.
Sonia Thomas of Sale easily won the
Senior Womens' event, coming home well clear of Gateshead's Charlotte
Wickham. The runner-up is making a welcome return to regular
competition after gaining many titles as a teenager. Jessica
Trowbridge took third place but could not count for her new club
Gateshead, allowing Chester Le Street, led by fifth-placed Maxine
Czarnecka to take the team title.
Ricky Stevenson, who just missed out
on selection for the European Championships, finished well clear of his
rivals in the Under 20 event. With Dominic Shaw and Lewis
Gamble-Thompson taking the minor medals, it was a clean sweep for New
Marske (the first by a club for many years), in the team event.
Mary Ferrier of Gateshead easily
retained her Womens' Under 20 title coming home ahead of
Middlesbrough's Kirsty Legg and leading Under 17 athlete, Kate Avery of
Shildon. Next across the line was Under 17 runner-up, Helen Gertig of
Blaydon. Gateshead retained the combined team title.
The improving Philip Hurst of Elswick
won the Under 17 Mens' race, from TIm Calder who led Tynedale to
victory in the team competition. The Hexham-based club also retained
the Under 15 Boys' title. In a good quality individual race, Mark Shaw
of New Marske, last year's Under 13 champion, held off a strong
challenge from Michael Priestley of Gosforth.
Gateshead's Sigourney Bell. second in
2006, easily won the Under 15 Girls' race, from Rosie King who led
Gosforth to the team title.
Morpeth started the meeting well with
Adam Harrington narrowly winning the Under 13 Boys' race from clubmate
Jonathan Nisbet, and they also took the team awards.
Zoe Hewitson took the Under 13 Girls'
title from Steph Bruce of Tynedale, though 4th placed
Charmaine Porter of Sunderand was sent
off course, when leading.
With third-placed Amy Etherington
backing up the winner, Shildon gained victory in the team event.
Morpeth retained the Middlesbrough and
Cleveland Trophy, for the best overall team performance.

scratch, clocked the fastest time, moving through the field into 21st
position.
