Additional Comments: Report edited. Weather warm and sunny, though
cooler wind later. A long meeting (finished at 5.10pm), with
surprisingly good entries in some events, that are not usually well
supported. However, there was a distinct lack of Senior/Junior Women
track competitors. There were not a lot of outstanding performances
from local athletes. A good day for Beck Leckie. She won 60m heat
(1.4w) and was third in 600m (2:08.84). Record info courtesy of Chris
Betts (not actually at meeting).:

British Athletics League.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 1st Aug.
A gallant effort by Gateshead
Harriers, saw them finish a creditable third at Saturday's British
League Division 1 fixture at the International Stadium.
In a match which saw all eight
positions, change regularly throughout the meeting, the Tyneside club were defeated on the day,
by Belgrave and Windsorf, Slough & Eton.
Gateshead are still however in sixth
place overall but have a six point cushion over Notts AC and Border,
who look set for relegation after the final fixture, in 3 weeks time.
Gateshead had to wait until the last
90mins of the meeting before providing their three individual
winners, all on the Field. Ade Babatunde won the Triple Jump shortly
followed by a victory from Craig Sturrock.in the Shot
Sturrock also won the B Discus..
Ian Burns closed the meeting when
winning the Javelin.
Track performances were affected by a
strong headwind in the finishing straight.
Niall Flannery of Gateshead, edged out
of a bronze medal in the recent European Junior Championships, finished
a close second in the opening event, the 400m Hurdles. His older
brother Kieran, then gained 2nd place in the 800m, behind National
1500m champion Jermaine Mays of Kent..
Richard Kilty finished 2nd in the 100m
with Joe Kibirige taking third in the B race and later finishing
third in the 200m. Newcomer, Patrick Swan took 2nd in the 400m, with
David Riley occupying a similar position in the B event.
Andrew Sturrock also performed well to
finish 3rd in the 110m Hurdles and 2nd in the B 400m Hurdles. World
Championship representative Will Sharman of Belgrave won the sprint
Hurdles
Sadly Gateshead struggled for
points in the longer track races.
Border's best performance came from
the ever-reliable James Douglas who finished 2nd in the
Steeplechase.
