Hetton Michael Page Memorial 10km.
Hetton Lyons Country Park. Sun. 31st
Aug.
Sunderland Harrier, Steven Potts improved on last year's 2nd place
to win the Houghton Harriers Michael Page Memorial 10km Multi
Terrain event at Hetton Lyons Country Park yesterday.
Potts pulled away from his rivals after 1.5M extending his
advantage to 1min 25secs over Birtley's Lee Millmore (3rd in 2007)
with another Birtley athlete, Shaun Laws taking third place.
The event was held as part of Houghton Harriers 50th anniversary
celebrations, which prompted the return to competition after 4 years of
Scottish Marathon International Lynn Cooper (formerly Harding), who
duly won the Womens' race finishing in 13th place overall. Cooper, who
has no plans to race again in the forseeable future, passed long-time
leader Sarah Lister of Blackhill in the final mile. Evenwood's Kim
Crowther took third place. .

info used. Results courtesy of UK Schools Games website, but some
events including Womens' 3000m and 80m Hurdles only seemed to appear in
one of the two sets of results. These appeared very quickly after each
event. Apologies to Kayleigh Mills, who I omitted from main
report. A very poor overall display by North East team. I
think they were 11th (Boys) and 10th (Girls). To be honest I have never
heard of Boys' Triple Jumper.

Observations from Olympic Games (15th -24th Aug); Congratulations to
our medallists especially Chrristine Ohuruogu on her 400m victory. Also
to Bolt (9.69 and 19.32 both World records), Bekele and Dibaba on their
double individual victories. Also Jamaican 4 x 100 Relay team
(39.10 also a World record). Johanna Jackson set British record in 20km
Walk finishing 22nd in 1:31:33, bettering her old figures by 7secs. The way the 1500m was run did not suit
Andy Baddaley, who I think might have got third in his kind of race
(picking up on last lap). However, he gets himself into some poor
positions (boxed on inside) in slowly run races. Martin Rooney was
affected by a poor run from Jeremy Wariner in final giving himself more
work than expected in finishing straight. I still think he finished
5th. Poor runs by legs 2 & 3 in 4x400 cost us medals in both races.
I think it was unwise sending Christine Ohuruogu off first
handing over to Kelly Sotherton, a novice in this kind of race,
who was a "sitting duck" at start of leg The American in Mens'
team was drastic. Losing ground in last 20m is a recipe for disaster (a
la Jamie Baulch several years ago). Some of these comments were
repeated from World Championships in 2007. So no lessons learnt.
Cleveland Land Services 14th Tartan Games.
Gateshead International Stadium.
Sat. 23rd Aug.
Despite the windy conditions there
were several outstanding performances at Saturday's 14th Tartan Games,
sponsored by Cleveland Land Services, at the International Stadium on
Saturday.
British Junior International Richard
Kilty easily won the Under 20 100m and 200m for the second successive
year.
Clevelnd-based Border Harrier Lloyd
Powell cleared a personal best height to win the Senior High Jump
adding 2cms to his previous figures.
English Schools silver medallist
Stacey Smith of Gateshead, clocked a personal best time to win the
Senior 800m improving her previous performance by 1.6secs.
English Schools champion, Kayleigh
Mills of Middlebrough Mandale, duly won the Under 17 Hammer.
Middlesbrough athletes had a
successful day as Fezan Mughi (Under 13 Boys) and Lee Burrell
(Under 15 Boys) gained sprint doubles in their respective
age-groups.
Jarrow's James Lovatt won the Under 17
100m and 200m, while clubmate Nick Wood won the Under 15
sprint Hurdles and High Jump.
Katherine Rogers of Blaydon gained a
double victory in the Under 13 sprint Hurdles and Long Jump.
