Gateshead Harriers 11th Annual Tartan Games.
International Stadium.  Sat. 27th August.
The 11th running of this popular event also coincided with the 50th anniversary of the building of the Stadium. In the bright conditions, two meeting records were broken. English Schools silver medallist, Hannah Evenden of Leeds added nearly five metres on to the old figures for the Under 15 Discus. For good measure she also won the Shot. Gateshead's Ashley Maddison bettered the old record in the Under 17 Discus by 19cms. The previous record holder, Lianne Tucker of Blaydon, this year's A.A.A silver and English Schools bronze medallist, easily won the Senior Shot and Discus.
On the track Rabah Yusuf of Border, the county 400m champion, gained a comfortable sprint double and Victoria Carmichael of Gateshead achieved a similar feat in the Womens' events..
The inaugural Stan Long Mile, held in memory of the respected cach who died in May, was won by Elswick's Ryan McLeod. Chris Parr who had been brave enough to go with the pace makers, was left with a 40m lead after 2 laps and still held the iniative with 150m to go, when the chasing pack took over.
Craig Crawford Glanville of Gateshead, betterd known for his exploits over 400m, moved up in distance to win the Junior Mens' 800m in a personal best time. There were some good sprinters on show in the younger age-groups. Richard Kilty of Gateshead, the English Schools' bronze medallist won the Under 17 100m. There were double victories for Jennifer Ellis of Gateshead (Under 13 Girls), Matthew Kibler of Tynedale (Under 13 Boys), Nicola Pearson of Gateshead (Under 15 Girls), John Summers of Gateshead (Under 15 Boys) and Lauren Arthur of Gateshead (Under 17 Women). Pearson, probably the North East's busiest athlete, also tok second place in the Long Jump behind old rival Lisa Sabel of Sale.

Additional Comments: All info used. Weather dry and bright and little wind (most of time). Programme was not so long this time, but there was too long a pause (50mins) between end of short sprints and Stan Long Mile. However Mrs Neuff  (who I thank for providing wind speeds) will be submitting programme adjustments to Chris Betts. Thanks to Mrs Betts (Field) and Sid and Vera (Track) for results. Quite a lot of late entries (374 in advance). A strange thing is that Jessica Read (who I am sure won her heat of U13 100) is not listed in heat results. A good meeting with an excellent overall standard (can tell when submitting AW results). Splits in Mile were 59.9 (M Elliott/J Hogg), 2:02.7 and 3:06.1 (Parr).

Auckland Castle 10km Road Race.
Bishop Auckland.  Sun. 21st August.
Mikah Kogo maintained the Kenyan dominance of the Auckland Castle 10km, by winning yesterday's 7th running of the event. Kenyans have won this race every year since it's inauguration in 1999, but Leigh's Peter Riley nearly spoilt the party finishing only 5secs behind the winner. Olga Kimayio made it a Kenyan double to win the Womens' race, bettering Russian Galena Alexandrova's 2003 course record by 4 secs.
On a beautiful summer's morning, over 500 competitors lined up at Bishop Auckland marketplace. The leading group was down to five at 2km, with Riley joining the four leading Kenyans. A trio of Koga, Tarragon and Kigen had broken clear of Riley at 5km (14:25) but Riley fought his way back and made a bid for victory at 8km (23:02). Koga was the only person to respond and comfortably pulled way from his rival in the final 300m. The winner (19) was having his first race in Britain, having arrived less than 24 hours earlier, but has clocked a fast 13mins 16secs for 5000m on the track. Riley, who represented Great Britain at the World Cross Country Championships in March, was having his first race after having his summer season wrecked, when sustaining a stress fracture. Taragon, 2nd in June's Blaydon race and based in the Midlands, took third place ahead of Kigen. Leading home the North East challenge in 11th place, was Ian Hudspith with Morpeth clubmate, Martin Scaife close behind in 13th. Mark Hudspith finished in 26th ensuring a team victory (which incorporated the A.A.A Championship) for Morpeth. For good measure, the same trio also representing the North East Counties took the incorporated Inter Counties title.
Kimayio (18) was also visiting this country for the first time, but looked very impressive winning the Womens' race finishing in 37th position overall. Kimayio had arrived 2 days earlier after a 12hour flight. 30secs adrift in 2nd place was 2004 winner, Natalie Harvey of South London, while in 3rd place, was this year's "Blaydon" winner Katherine Mutwa another Midlands-based Kenyan.
The region's first athlete, in 11th place was North Eastern champion, Aiveen Fox of Morpeth.
She was ably supported by the Darlington pair of Bernadette Taylor (18th) and Alison Raw (28th) as the North East took the bronze medals in the Inter County Championship, behind Lancashire and Surrey.

Additional comments: 509 finishers (last time: 75:50) officially though I gather nine numbers (including Michelle Holt /164th in 42:32) were missed. This error was found through timekeeper's spot check. Lovely summer's morning (not too hot). Another excellent promotion by Max Coleby and Wear Valley DC. As usual there will probably be a few errors from original results. Never heard of Richardson (8th) who would be Inter County winner. Also suspect 27th lady was incorrect. Have said before but subsidiary team results (eg Women, Inter Counties) should go on position in that category, rather than overall placing. Had to compose 1000 words for AW which was difficult. Other personalities taking part included 293 M Stephenson 48:30; 369 D Whitmore 48:30. Surprised Bill McNeil defeated Ian Barnes, who was well ahead at 4km. Heaton's two performers were 200 D Stewart 44:27 and 226 A Mulliss 45:41. Footnote: AW actually edited already shorter report. They did include the fact that Richardson runs for Charnwood.

Additional Comments:  All info used. Weather overcast early on but developed into a warm sunny day. Left almost speechless after a very disappointing overall showing. Congratulations to all medallists. Could not believe some of excuses given to Andy Ward for non paticipation. Unfortunately there were glaring gaps on Womens' team and some competing, were probably 4th/6th choices. Understand from Kevin Carr that Nicola Pearson set two pb's. Not sure of Relay team members but Ben Smith (U15) and Warren Roberts (U17) were last leg runners over 100,100,200,600m event.

Additional Comments:  Only results sent due to time lapse. Weather was bright and quite mild. 163 finishers (last time: 76:48) (nb nearly dark when they finished). Course quite tough and probably worth only 30secs longer for 10km. New race headquarters certainly a lot more roomy than Dougies Tavern. Congratulations to John Moore who aliong with Paul Besford pulled away from early leader Wilson after 2M. John eased away (rather than kicked) with 300m remaining. Lovely to see Danielle Hodgkinson again, with a good run. Only first team gained prizes.

Sherwoods Darlington 10km Road Race.
Sun. 14th August.
Martin Scaife of Morpeth was an emphatic winner of yesterday's Sherwoods Darlington 10km Road Race. Scaife who had gained a hat trick of victories from 2001-3, soon headed the 800 strong field passing the halfway point in 15mins 12 secs, 200m ahead of Sundrland's Mark Hood.
With conditions getting more blustery as the race progressed, Scaife finished 4 secs outside his own 2002 course record, which he had hoped to break.
Leading veteran Jon Orange of Richmond and Zetland finished in a distant second position ahead of Morpeth's Terry Wall.  With Alan Shepherd a close-up 6th, Morpeth comfortably won the team event.
Bernadette Taylor of Darlington was an easy winner of the Womens' race, coming home well clear of Dawn Richardson of Quakers, with Angie Watson of Chester le Street in 3rd place. Supported by leading veteran Alison Raw in 5th and Jo-Ann Short (14th), Taylor led the home club to a fourth successive team victory.

Wind strengthened during race. 971 finishers (more than originally thought as full results not available until Monday pm). Last time (with 970th) was 81:45.  I am sure there are errors in those listed (especially in some veterans' categories) but only adjustment so far is Steve Murdoch (now Eden RR) finished 19th (34:58) making him 3rd M40. Bernadette Taylor's halfway time was 18:45 (negative splits !). Dave Whitmore finished 427th (49:08). North of England A.A Track and Field League.
Sun. 7th August.
Seaton won the match and took the title, after yesterday's final North of England League Division 3 fixture at Whitley Bay. Richmond and Zetland overhauled New Marske to take second place overall.
Host club North Shields took 3rd place in the match finishing 5th overall. Jenny Graham gained an impressive sprint double and helped her club to victory in both Relays.
In the male sprints, Nick Little gained a sprint double for Tynedale, but Blaydon teenager David Robinson was just as fast winning the B races. Kelly Rodmell also won three events for Tynedale.
Birtley provided the day's top performers with Kate Wilson and Rebecca Pottinger, both in the Under 17 age-group, gaining treble victories.
