Double Championship 4 x 400m gold medallist Jared Deacon, scored good points for Border taking second place in the 400m Hurdles. Steve Clarke and Phil Sharpe finished second and third, in the Long Jump and Javelin, respectively. North Eastern Cross Country champion, Michael Openshaw, competing for Birchfield finished second in the 1500m.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 2nd September 2002).

Additional Comments: Not used, which was annoying considering small amount of copy, and effort it took to get info (courtesy of Tom Pollak). Only A string results available but later found out from Brian Kirkley, that Deacon was second in B 200m (time not known). He will not be pleased with his Hurdles time. His performances over the barriers seem to have deteriorated, rather than improved, as season progressed. All credit to Border for competing at highest level, but they unfortunately do not have the "financial backing" of their rivals, which spelt relegation.
Footnote: Info courtesy of AW. Jared Deacon was 5th in A 200m in 21.7. Paul Reed was 5th in Shot (14.62) and 4th in Discus (48.42). Border were 3rd in 4 x 400 (3:23.2).

Morpeth Herald Report.
(for issue of 29th Aug).
Morpeth athletes were prominent again, at the annual Gateshead Harriers Accenture sponsored Tartan Games at the International Stadium. Pride of place goes to Nicola Halliday who won both the Under 17 200m (26.3) and 300m (41.64), setting a meeting record in the latter. Paul Nwaolise won the Senior Mens' 100m (11.00), with David Riley finishing second (11.29). Wayne Gedge finished 6th (12.35). Andrew Toward outkicked Elswick's Ryan McLeod, to win the 3000m in a time of 8mins 41secs. In the Under 17 Mens' age-group, Alan Selby gained a sprint double with times of 11.37secs and 23.06secs respectively. Paul Moore was 4th in the 100m (11.55) and third in the 200m (23.20). With the wind turning as the meeting progressed, it was noticeable that both athletes ran much faster in their 100m heats, clocking  11.3secs. Jed Armstrong won the Javelin with a throw of 32.73m. Sean Rand was fith in the Junior Mens' 100m heat (12.1), but finished 4th in the Senior 200m (24.45). Dan Samuels finished 7th in a highly competitive Senior 800m (1:57.40). Philip Holmes was 7th in the Senior Javelin (42.33).
In the Under 15 Boys' age-group, Steven Gibson took third place in the Triple Jump (11.23), but was 8th in the Long Jump (5.07). Simon Catling finished 11th (4.72), but was 5th in the 200m (26.53), after winning his heat in 26.3. Simon Dale did not progress in the 100m after finishing third in his heat (12.8).
In the Under 15 Girls' age-group, Philippa McGregor finished 5th (13.21) and Kayleigh Stoker was 8th (13.86) in the 100m Final. McGregor finished second in her heat (13.2), Stoker was 4th (13.6), and Cherelle Watson was 4th (13.8) and did not qualify. Watson did qualify for the 200m final finishing 7th (28.7). Stoker was 4th in her heat (29.2), but did not qualify. Delyth James made a valiant attempt to lead all the way in the 800m C race, but was caught on the line by Gateshead's Samantha Duffy. Delyth, who clocked 2:29.8, must have been listening to Mr Foster on BBC, re looking at times of previous heats, and knowing how hard to run, as her time proved to be second fastest overall.
Tom Rand took third place in the Under 13 100m (13.41), but Marc Cochrane (6th in 15.0) and Ryan Jordan (5th in 14.8), failed to qualify from the heats. Jordan did finish 6th in the 200m final (31.9). Cochrane along with Martyn Cairns, finished 5th (2:33.05) and 6th (2:33.76) respectively in the 800m. Cairns was 11th in the Long Jump with a leap of 3.92m.
In the Under 13 age-group, Bethany Black was second in the Long Jump (4.09), and was 4th in the 200m (29.79). Bethany was faster in her heat, finishing second in 29.5.
Walter Ryder, now in the M65 category, travelled down from his Scottish base, to take part in Sunday's Auckland Castle 10km, which incorporated the British Veterans' Championships. Walter finished in 143rd in 39:23, and gained the bronze medal in his age-group. Also taking part were Kevin and Linda Bray. Their final positions are not known at press time, and will be included next week.
Archie Jenkins took a fine silver medal in the 10000m at the European Veterans' Championships, at Potsdam, Germany. Running in the M50 age-group, Archie clocked a time of 34:14.6. Archie's other performances will be reviewed next week. Tom Ranger clocked a time of 3:44.01, when finishing 9th in the BMC 1500m event, at Watford, on August 14th.
Morpeth only had two athletes competing in the Jarrow and Hebburn Riverside Challenge 6M Road race, on 20th August. Chris Dentice finished in 12th position behind Stewy Bell of Chester Le Street. Chris clocked 34:18 and duly won the M50 category. Bernie Cordes who finished 83rd in the 210 strong field, won the M65 category in a time of 41:09.
Local athletes do not have any competition this weekend, but there is a clash next Wednesday (4th Sept), with both the North East Veterans' 5000m and 10000m Championships at Jarrow, and the Watergate 7K at Lobley Hill, due to take place.

Additional Comments: Generally ok, but difficult re details from Tartan Games. George Patterson is on holiday until 30th August. Footnote:  Most of info used.

Additional Comments: Info courtesy of AW. Will put in Journal for Monday (2nd Sept). Morpeth were second in 4 x 100 (courtesy of Morpeth Herald). Not much to say, but did not look like a good turn-out from region's teams in main finals. At least Morpeth defeated Gateshead, this time. Not sure why Les Atkinson ran here, instead of National Veterans 10km. Surely he was not the only one available ? I think it was quite windy, and favourable to sprinters.

New Balance Auckland Castle 10km Road Race.
Bishop Auckland.  Sun. 25th Aug.
Kenyan Julius Kimtai won yesterday's fourth New Balance Auckland Castle 10km Road race. The multi-winner of the annual Blaydon event, proved too strong in the finishing straight from the Market place to the Castle grounds, holding off fellow countryman and Tipton Harrier, Julius Kibet. Kimtai had also won the race in 1999 and 2000. After a slow opening kilometre a quartet of Kenyans pulled away from the record field of 630 competitors, with only Matt O'Dowd, who finished fifth, offering any real challenge from the home-grown athletes. First local runner was Michael Openshaw of Birchfield in 10th place, who along with Chester Le Street athletes, Martin Scaife (12th) and Stewy Bell (16th) helped the North win the incorporated Inter Area team event.
Miriam Mangari of Kenya won the Womens' race, with the first four runners bettering the old course record. Mangari, who finished 27th overall, was followed home by fellow Kenyan, Emily Samoie and Russian Blaydon Race winner, Yelana Burykina.
The race also incorporated the British Veterans' Championships. As expected the area's athletes performed well. Rob Hand of Durham, added to his Cross Country title, by taking the main M40 award. Hand was trailing former Sunderland Harrier, Malcolm Price at halfway, but finished strongly to defeat his rival by 8 secs. David Maclachlan of Border took third place. Chester Le Street's Dianne Henaghan, who also led the North women to victory, was the leading W35 competitor, coming home in 6th position, over 3 minutes ahead of her nearest challenger. Clubmate Heather Robinson took the W40 title ahead of Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee, who is only one week short of her 45th birthday. Phil Lancaster of North Shields Poly and Eric Appleby of Heaton, took the gold medals in the M60 and M70 categories, respectively.

Additional Comments: Report severely edited. One of my favourite races, though course not as fast as made out by organisers, with cobbles around Castle and twisting turns on Roads. Weather was bright but overcast, quite warm with little wind. Honoured by the prescence of Dick Balding, but not happy they used his machine times. I got 29:00 for winner and nearly all finishing times are 1 sec quicker than mine. Known Km splits were 3:05, 5:56 and 11:42 (4K). Race dominated by "imported" athletes, with only five North East competitors in first thirty. Heaton had four competitors, led home by Allen Mulliss (247th). Allen is now in M45 category and was 31st here in 42:59. Eric was 253rd, Gerry was 443rd and Tom was 447th.
Unfortunately there were no medals for first M70 team. 632 finishers Ted Joynson was placed 630th in 72:32. However, he was tailed off by 4K (in Castle), which he would have reached in no quicker than 32mins (guide from leading runners - Stewie was last runner to lap him), which is well outside 80mins pace. There were two ladies behind him, who were at least 3mins ahead after first lap. I understand that he was sent the wrong way by an Aurora athlete ! Please note Neville Carr now runs for Aurora, along with the spectating Ray Laverick. Only leading positions of Main race/Veterans available on day, courtesy of Julian Waugh. Full results available three days later on www.wearvalley.gov.uk. Footnote: No M70 results in AW, which is an insult to competitors.

Accenture Tartan Games.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sat. 24th Aug.
The good weather helped competitors achieve some excellent performances, at Saturday's Gateshead Harriers' Accenture sponsored ninth annual Tartan Games at the International Stadium. In the Senior events, Richard Smith of Newham, won the 400m and former Commonwealth champion, Chris Black of Edinburgh, now a veteran, won the Hammer .
Junior International, Ben Flint of Belgrave set a meeting record in the Pole Vault. Newcastle- based Border Harrier Paul Reed won the Shot and Discus, setting new figures in both events. Youngsters dominated the 3000m with Andrew Toward of Morpeth pulling away from Ryan McLeod of Elswick on the final lap. Paul Nwaolise of Morpeth easily won the 100m, while Peter Vickers of Mandale, took the 200m after earlier winning the 100m in the Under 20 age-group.
Ruth Irving of Edinburgh, who competed for Scotland in the Long Jump at the Commonwealth Games, set a meeting record in that event and also in the Triple Jump. Sara Todd of Border won the 100m Hurdles and the 200m setting a personal best time and a meeting record in the latter. The in-form Jarrow and Hebburn athlete, Claire Smallwood won the 3000m, bettering the old figures by 1.8secs. Claire Moore of Gateshead also bettered the old record in the Discus. Another Gateshead thrower, Leah Weatheritt set new figures in the Shot. Scottish International Shirley Webb who competes for both Edinburgh and North Shields Poly,  broke the Hammer record.
Graham Jackson of the host club, the reigning English Schools' Triple Jump champion, won both his specialist event (bettering Chris Tomlinson's old figures) and the Long Jump in the Under 17 age-group. His distances of 13.99m and 6.53m were meeting records. English Schools' 200m silver medallist, James Sinclair of Gateshead gained a sprint double in the Under 15 age-group. Lewis Robson of Gateshead, the current English Schools' 400m champion, showed his versatility by winning the Under 15 Long Jump, with a meeting record.
John Taylor of Mandale produced one of the day's best middle distance performances, by leading all the way to win the Under 15 800m.
Roisin Willi of Gateshead gained another sprint double in the Under 15 Girls' age-group. In the Under 17 womens' category, Lianne Tucker of Blaydon set a meeting revord in the Discus and also won the Shot.

* Denotes Meeting record.
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 26th August 2002).

Additional Comments: Only results used (space always seems to be a problem on Bank Holiday weekend).  Weather was bright and sunny, but the little wind changed direction, making it colder as day progressed. 100m Finals were therefore slower than heats. A good meeting, (better known as Chris Betts Games), but too many events. Lasted 6.5 hours without intended 1 hour lunch break. Took over an hour after end of meeting, to get full results. A lot of time spent with Hurdle events, and not enough competitors. Claire Brason refused at first Hurdle in 400m, but ran well in flat 200m. There were disabled events also, with Tanni Grey Thompson winning mixed 100m (18.6). Photo finish was only used in finals, but did not function a lot of time. Omitted a good double by Nicola Halliday, but Alan Selby did not look as impressive as normal. David Riley was supporting new red hairstyle.  Claire S was going to airport straight after race, to go on holiday. Rebecca Shield paid for going too easily in Under 13 800m as Samantha Coleby (who must have been listening to Brendan on television), knew exactly what to do in Race 2. Delyth James adopted similar tactics, in Under 15 event. Saw Gemma Fergusson for only second time, this season. She looked slightly overweight, but I understand she has been sidelined with a slight injury. The meeting started with a (VERY badly advertised) Hour Decathlon competition (Even Richard Hunter was not there). There were four competitors. Peter Coates (4921) won and Sophie Dewell (3800) was only lady. No further results available.

Jarrow Riverside Challenge 6M Road Race.
Tues. 20th Aug.
Stewart Bell comfortably won last night's Jarrow and Hebburn Riverside Challenge Road Race. Running on a new adapted 6M course, the Chester Le Street athlete came home with 36 secs to spare over leading veteran, Rob Hand of Durham. Mark Slesser of the host club was close behind in third place. Claire Smallwood easily won the Womens' race, finishing in 15th position in the 210 strong field. Jarrow and Hebburn clubmate, Angela Hunter took second place, ahead of Andrea Banner of Elswick.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Wed. 21st August 2002).
Additional Comments: All info used a day later on 22nd. 210 competitors. Times were not fast but course is quite difficult. Weather was bright, but cool breeze developing, after very warm day. Odd start and finish positions, and change of distance, were all due directly (or indirectly) to UK Athletics safety guidelines. Claire is now off on a fortnight's holiday to Tunisia. Heaton had 14 athletes. John Moore was recovering from heavy cold and eased off after 2M. Sean Kelly finished in an excellent 14th position (34:24). Shirley Atkinson was first lady (124th in 44:30). Margaret Finn (46:26), was actually first W40. Eric Appleby finished 106th. Mens' team were 6th and Womens' team, 4th.

Gateshead. Sat. 17th Aug.
Paul Stevens from Hull, won the oudoor Pole Vault at Baltic Square, Gateshead on Saturday. Mark Christie of Sale took second place ahead of Keith Higham of Border. Commonwealth bronze medallist in the Decathlon, Jamie Quarry finished in fourth place, while Sophie Dewell of Gateshead won the Womens' competition. Eleven competitors took part in the event, which was the second in the area, after a successful promotion, at Hexham, in June. The event was part of a programme, to announce a sponsorship deal by Northumbrian Water and Sportsmatch, for a total of £52,000, towards the cost of developing athletics in the region.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 19th August 2002).

Additional Comments: All info used. Quite an enjoyable event, with a few pb's. I think those included Quarry (who competed in Long Jump at Glasgow, the next day, his final International appearance), and Dodsworth. Noticed both Jo Parkinson there (she seemed to be with Terry Lomax) and Pauline Leslie (some official capacity)

City of Sunderland Hetton Lyons Country Park Race.
Wed. 14th Aug.
Simon O'Donnell of Chester Le Street, won the final race in the Sunderland Sport in Park Series, at Hetton, last night. O'Donnell was joined at the halfway point by Rob Walker of North Shields and Mark Hood of Sunderland, before pulling away from his rivals on the second of the two laps. Jarrow's Claire Smallwood, made it a one-hundred-per-cent record in the Series for the second successive year, finishing in 18th place overall and equalling her own course record. Clubmate, Angela Hunter took second place ahead of leading veteran, Dawn Elliott of Houghton and Peterlee.
Result.  Distance: 4.8K.

(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 15th August 2002).

Additional Comments: Not used. Will resubmit for Monday (19th). 93 finishers, the most for some years. Allen Mulliss was 48th (20:01), and Eric was 93rd (4th M60 behind Lancaster, Roger Wilson and George Smith. Lindsay Dunn was about 10 secs behind Eric. Wish they would use five-year veteran categories. It makes things easier especially with results. Very warm with a slight breeze. Apparently course very uneven underfoot, at far side.

Additional Comments: All info used. Old M50 Discus record was 56.97m. Not sure who held it, but probably Peter Gordon himself ? Did not get Shot and "Invitation" Hammer results, as they had not started when track events finished. Very poor turn-out again. Gavin Massingham was pacemaker in BMC events. 400m splits were A: 56.0 B: 57.3 Women: 61.4. Ketan Desai was 5th in A race, in 1:57.6, much better than his outings, on the previous weekend. Tom Radcliffe clocked 3:11.0 in M70 800m. Only six ran in 5000m + Lynne Marr who clocked 11:14.5 in 3000m (sorry I overlooked this result when sent).

CD Bramall Darlington 10K Road Race.
Sun. 11th Aug.
Martin Scaife repeated his 2001 victory, in yesterday's CD Bramall 10K Road Race, after a terrific battle, with clubmate Stewie Bell. In the ideal conditions, Bell and Scaife were joined by Sheffield's Andrew Kilding in the early stages, before dropping their rival at the 4K point. The pair were together at halfway on the new two lap course (15:14), with Bell making his bid for victory with 3K remaining. Bell opened up a 30m gap, which was maintained as he turned into the long finishing straight. However, Scaife did not give up and sprinted past his rival with less than 20m remaining. Kilding held on for third place, ahead of Barry Stephenson, who led Quakers to the team title. Former Junior International, Susie Rutherford of Darlington, easily won the Womens' race finishing in 25th place overall. Darlington provided the first three finishers with Bernadette Taylor taking second place ahead of leading veteran, Jo-Ann Short.
Result.
1 M Scaife (CleS) 30:21; 2 S Bell (CleS) 30:22; 3 A Kilding (CoSheffield) 31:24; 4 B Stephenson (Quak) 31:41; 5 J Orange (R&Z) 32:32; 6 M Mcdonald (Low F) 32:59; 7 D Lockett (Salf) 33:16; 8 A Tatham (Quak) 33:27; 9 M Slesser (J&H) 33:29; 10 P Groark (Sun) 33:46; 11 M Grainger (Darl, M40) 33:53; 12 P Johnson (Thames VH, M40) 34:11; 13 A Brown (Blyth) 34:19; 14 S Miller (Wrekin) 34:34; 15 N Orr (Darl, M40) 34:48  Further Veterans: M45 - I Scott (Quak) 35:22  M50 - C Raffferty (M&C) 35:21  M55 - M Walker (Gosf) 36:07  M60 - R Wiilson (Sun) 39:34  M65 - I Barnes (Darl) 39:41  M70 - E Appleby (Heat) 42:08  Team: Quakers

Additional Comments: All info used. Km splits were 2:57, 5:59, 9:07, 12:07, 15:14, 18:18, 21:23, 24:25e (sign not in view) and 27:27. Course was obviously fast judging by times. Conditions were ideal, no wind, warm but bearable. 795 finishers, but a poor standard, after 200. Problems with congestion, after lapping started at 7K point. Also slow traffic at roundabout at approximately 8K (probably why sign was not seen). Eric, who was exactly 4 minutes ahead of Bill McNeil, finished in 141st position. His time was definitely quicker than I expected. Also taking part was Allen Mulliss, who was 127th in 41:29, another pb, I think. About fifty in inaugural Junior Run. Results courtesy of Ian Taylor.

(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 7th August 2002).

Additional Comments: Not used. Will resubmit results for Monday (12th). Deluge after about 30 mins of programme, caused abandonment of Pole Vault (Mark Christie was leading with 3.10m clearance). Meeting resumed after 25 mins break. Track events straight after resumption seemed slow (lot of water on track). However it did dry up and turn into a pleasant evening. Good turn-out in Mens' 3000m, but not great in anything else. Pitiful number of Senior/Junior Women (including three guests). Kirk Wilson was looking good in Senior/Under 17 3000m (lying 4th overall), before dropping out with two laps to go. Early pace was fast (Mark Brown went through kms in 2:43 and 5:35). Drew Graham was 4th in 400m (52.2). Finishing third in Under 17 200m, was Kelly Rodmell, now running Border colours. Best performances by Ryan Stephenson (Grade 2), and Emily Wood (Grade 2).

Morpeth 10K Road Race.
Tues. 6th Aug.
Terry Wall of Morpeth, won his own club's 10K Road Race, for the second successive year. In the very warm conditions, Wall together with new Morpeth recruit, Ivan Hollingsworth, soon pulled away from the 230 strong field, passing the first mile in 5:04. Wall dropped his rival after 1.5M, but an advantage of 60m was never really increased, as the runner-up kept the winner in his sights for the rest of the race. Former Gateshead Harrier, Mark Smith finished a distant third, ahead of Mark McDonald of Low Fell and leading veteran, Les Akinson of Morpeth. Claire Smallwood of Jarrow and Hebburn, came home in an excellent 14th place, setting her second personal best time in two days.  Smallwood, who finished six seconds outside Jill Boltz's course record, came home over 3 minutes ahead of veteran, Heather Robinson of Chester Le Street, with Elswick's Judith Nutt taking third place. The first three men and women, also took the medals in the North Eastern Counties' Championship, which was incorporated in the event.

Additional Comments: Not used but in on Thurs (8th), again due to e mail delay. Veterans' categories ommited though. 226 finishers. There was no 2M marker, but other Mile splits were 14:39, 19:49 and 24:57. Jill Botz's record was set in 1998.  Only four from Heaton. Richard Dodgson was first counter (77th in 40:56), followed by Gary Campbell (91st in 41:54), and probable pb by Allen Mulliss (105th in 42:27). George Routledge was 215th in 59:21. Additional Comments: Not used due to e mail problem, but used on Tuesday (6th). Long drawn-out programme at Jarrow, probably because it was a single-header. This was despite the races being split on nearly every occasion. Kingston-upon-Hull did not turn up, so we were spared the presence of Kelly Rodmell. In  4 x 400m, Morpeth's team included Aiveen Fox, Nisha Desai (59.8) and Nichola Halliday, who clocked pb in 100m. The Browns were not there, as Doreen had joined up with Richard at Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. Division 4 / Claire Smallwood info from Chris Betts (he only had lower division result). Angela Hunter was also likely to be competing.

North of England Mens' Track and Field League.
Sat. 3rd Aug.
Gateshead were overhauled by the host club, in the race for the North of England Mens' League Division 1 title at Derby on Saturday. Gateshead had a lead of 1.5 points before the meeting, but their third placing behind Derby and Liverpool Pembroke, meant the Tynesiders were beaten by half-a-point, thus losing out on an invitation to the British League qualifying match.
Gateshead were without key athletes, but were helped out by several of their Junior squad. English Schools' Intermediate Triple Jump champion, Graham Jackson, won his speciality event and was second in the Long Jump. First in the  B  Long Jump was Northern Junior champion, Chris Weitz. Richard Hunter was Gateshead's other A event winner in the 110m Hurdles. Sadly finishing seventh in the match (and seventh overall), were Morpeth Harriers, which meant the Northumberland club, had dropped from British League status to Northern Division 2 in successive seasons. Despite some good track results, including wins by Paul Nwaoilse (100m and B 400m) and Tom Ranger (800m), Morpeth were very weak in the Hurdles and Field events. Ironically on the same day Morpeth B team were promoted from Division 4 to 3.
In the Division 2 fixture at Middlesbrough, Mandale were successful on the day, but were unable to catch leaders Nestle Rowntrees. The pair will now take part in a qualifying match for Division 1 at Oldham, in September. Border B won both the match and took the title, in the Division 3 fixture also at Middlesbrough. In the Division 4 meeting at Jarrow, Wallsend won the match, with third placed Richmond and Zetland, taking the title.

Additional Comments: Not used on Monday due to e mail system fault, but used on Tuesday (6th). Division 1 results courtesy of Chris Betts. Ketan Desai was very disappointing for Morpeth, clocking 2:19 and 4:49 in 800m/1500m. Divisions 2 and 3 posted through letterbox by John Moore. John would probably have finished fourth in 5000m, as there were three faster in Division 2 match. Jared Deacon was in attendance at Jarrow meeting, with his Commonwealth gold medal. He is not confident of getting on European 4 x 400m team (even in heat). Obviously he was not competing for Border in British League match. A poor turn-out here, with few teams fielding more than eight athletes. Paul Hutton won B 100m in 12.8secs. An overweight Steve O'Gara ran a 400m Relay leg for Wallsend in 60.3secs. He is hoping to go to Ireland, for an operation to cure his long-term injury. After scrutiny a change of the result of match elevates Gosforth to third, but does not affect overall placings.
