April 2008

Start Fitness North Eastern Athletics League.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Wed. 30th April.
In the far from ideal conditions (cool and damp), Gateshead's Richard Kilty opened his summer season, breaking the unofficial British Junior record for the 150m. However, in the absence of electronic timing and a wind reading, this performance by the English Schools 100m champion, is unlikely to be ratified. Kilty later won the 300m.
Morpeth's Laura Weightman the current English Schools Intermediate champion, stepped into the Under 20 age-group to clock a personal best time in the 1500m taking 3 secs off her previous figures.

Additional Comments: Surprisingly all info used. Results courtesy of Chris Betts.  Weather overcast and quite cool. Not much wind though. A good turn-out in Track events but a lot less Field Eventers than normal (Restrictions on some events due to nature of track lay-out). Surprisingly Kilty ran in Lane 1. Unofficial MoM awards went to Kilty and Weightman.

Transped Blyth Valley 10km Road Race.
Blyth.  Sun. 27th April.
The ideal conditions saw both course records broken, in yesterday's fourth Transped Blyth Valley 10km Road Race, which started and finished on Blyth Quayside.
Claremont's Peter Newton was content to follow Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly in the early stages, before overhauling his rival in the final 2M. Newton's margin of victory was 21secs, and he bettered the 2006 course record by 14secs. Michael Dawson finished in a distant 3rd place, ensuring a comfortable team victory for North Shields Poly.
Rebecca Robinson of Kendal had an exceptional run, finishing in 6th place overall.
Robinson took a massive 2mins 53secs off the old course record, set in the inaugural event in 2005.
2006 winner Michelle Holt of Sunderland also bettered the old figures in a distant second place, ahead of clubmate and defending champion, Louise Noble. The Wearsiders also retained the team title.

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield.  Sat. 26th April.
Results.
Chester Le Street narrowly failed in their attempt to regain the National Womens' 6 Stage Road Relay title, at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.
The Durham club, winners in 2006 and 3rd in 2007, had taken the lead after Alyson Dixon's 4th leg. Earlier efforts by Claire Simpson (13th), Emma Waterhouse (5th) and Kathryn Waugh saw Dixon take over in 4th place, her time only bettered on the day by Charnwood's Juliet Potter. Maxine Czarnecka maintained the advantage on leg 5, with Freya Murray taking over 15secs ahead of Aldershot's Vicky Gill. Murray was passed by her rival in the closing stages, going down by 4secs. Gill's time matched that of Dixon.
Chester Le Street's B team performed well in 21st position, with Wallsend finishing a creditable 40th.
Sadly the North East did not perform so well in the Senior Mens' Race. Sunderland and Gateshead, both fielding weakened teams finished in 34th and 39th places, respectively. Ironically, former Gateshead Harrier, Alan Buckley ran the 11th leg for Leeds City, who retained their title.
Results.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. Info from race-results website (before 7.00pm). Leg positions were: SW: CleS B 21,14,10,10,17,21. Walls: 42,42,41,41,39,40. Gate: 6.  SM: Sun: 14,9,25,28,27,27,28,27,24,27,30,34. Gate: 10,17,22,27,29,31,33,36,36,37,37,39. Morp: 25,12,20,20,23,24,22. I understand a problem with Morpeth is that they could only enter 24 as opposed to the usual 36 names. Hence they were not covered, with a high drop-out rate of names entered. Hepples (4th to 2nd) and Taylor were 6th and 8th fastest respectively. Murray was 10th fastest lady. Moralee moved from 11th to 8th. Cole stayed in 2nd.

Durham University Challenge Meeting.
Maiden Castle.  Sat. 26th April.
Durham University won the Open Challenge Meeting, the first fixture at the new Maiden Castle track, on Saturday.
The strong winds affected performances.
International Cross Country runner, Felicity Milton, easily won the Womens' 5000m.
English Schools champion, Samantha Coleby of the Durham City club, was untroubled in winning the 400m Hurdles. She returned later to clock a 57.2secs leg, anchoring her club to victory in the 4x400m Relay.
Results.

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 28th April 2008).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. A quiet but long meeting. Results courtesy of Andy Billett. Weather was dry but the cold wind could be felt around finish line (on normal back straight). 100m and Hurdles races ran by main building, where it was warmer and more sheltered. These events were wind-assisted. A Durham University sprinter (did not get name) won 100m (11.4) and 200m (23.1). Meeting organiser Nathan Shrubb finished 2nd in 5000m (have not got time - about 16:10). I think Durham City finished 2nd and Leeds Metro University finished 3rd. Newcastle and Sunderland University provided a handful of competitors. It is hoped to make this an a bigger annual event.

New Marske Spring Coast 5km Road Race.
Redcar.  Wed. 23rd April.
Ricky Stevenson of the host club, smashed the course record, when winning the New Marske Spring Coast 5km.
In the ideal conditions, the Junior International dropped new Belgrave recruit Shaun Moralee after 1200m, pulling away to an easy victory. His time bettered the old figures set by Sunderland's Mark Hood, by a massive 24secs. Lewis Gamble Thompson also of New Marske, overhauled Moralee in the closing stages, to take second place.
New Marske's Tony Livingston, recent winner of the British Masters Half Marathon title in his age-group, was the leading veteran in 8th position, his time placing him second in the UK Over 50 rankings.
Angela Hibbs of Claremont was the first lady, finishing in 20th position in the 140-strong field.

Additional Comments:  All info used but in small print with results (these courtesy of Janice Kauffman). Very cold afternoon. Apologies but I overlooked winner of 1500m, Lewis Tatt of Wakefield (4:16.08). Jessica Read also won Javelin (17.72). Joss Harwood ran with Under 17 Women. Her time was actually a UK W50 record, but the spacings were for younger age-group. Quite a lot of late entries, especially in 1500m.

Wellstream Wallsend Rising Sun  5M Multi Terrain Race.
Sun. 13th April.
Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly was an emphatic winner of yesterday's 2nd Wallsend Harriers Rising Sun Multi Terrain Race.
A record field of 223 runners took part in the Wellstream-sponsored event, held in cool but dry conditions, in the grounds of the Rising Sun Country Park.
Stephenson soon headed the field on the two-lap course, pulling away to a 71secs victory over Heaton Harrier, James Buis. In a close battle for third place,
Jon Archer of Low Fell proved too strong for Paul Turner of Durham, and Damien Weston of Sunderland. Tony Carter led the host club's challenge in 6th ahead of former Wallsend Harrier, Paul Merrison of Sunderland, who was the leading veteran.
Kathryn Waugh of Chester Le Street, now in the youngest Veterans' category, easily won the Womens' race from clubmate Angela Hunter. Claire Buis of Heaton edged out Vicky Hindson of Wallsend, to take the third spot.

Additional Comments: Report edited and in "Sports Shorts". Results courtesy of Chris Robson. 223 finishers last time: David Tait 62:04). I am not sure whether 10km ever got that many runners. Apologies to Paul Leigh, who is in the M40 age-group.Weather was bright early on, but clouded over and got colder, though stayed dry. Larger-than-expected field surprised organisers as (new) start was really too narrow.
