Transped Blyth Valley 10km Road Race.
Sun. 29th April.
Mark Brown of Morpeth repeated his 2006 victory at yesterday's third Transped Blyth Valley 10km Road Race. Brown soon broke clear of the record field of 380 runners, holding a 300m lead approaching halfway. At this point, Mark McLeod of Elswick just held second place, ahead of new Blyth recruit, Andrew Henderson. Brown nearly doubled his advantage at the finish line, with Heaton's John Moore finishing strongly to second place ahead of McLeod.
Host club Blyth defeated Morpeth on countback in the team event, while Paul Waterston of Morpeth was the leading veteran in 7th position.
Sunderland's Louise Noble comfortably won the Womens' race from the Heaton pair of Jo Zoppi and Helen Astley. With 2006 winner, Michelle Holt finishing 4th, Sunderland retained the team title.

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Sat. 14th April.
Morpeth Harriers gained silver and Chester Le Street Ladies gained bronze, at Saturday's National Road Relay Championships at a hot and sunny Sutton Park. It was Morpeth's best placing in the Mens' 12 Stage event, as they had previously finished third twice, the most recent effort being in 2002. Morpeth lay 20th on leg 1 after a steady run by Michael Morris. Jon Taylor improved to 13th on leg 2 with Chris Sampson improving 3 positions on leg 3. Jonathan Young moved up to 7th on leg 4, but Martin Scaife slipped to 10th on leg 5. Nick McCormick took over at this stage, and moved Morpeth into 2nd position. His time was the fastest on the day for the short leg, bettering that of National Cross Country champion, Frank Tickner of Wells by a massive 21secs. Neil Wilkinson dropped to 5th on leg 7. At this point, Leeds had moved into a lead they never surrendered, through former Durham University student, James Walsh. The Yorkshire club, who were narrowly defeated by Morpeth in the recent Northern event, took the title by over 2 mins.
Morpeth captain Dave Swinburne dropped to 7th on leg 8, but the very much in-form Ian Hudspith moved them back into second place on leg 9. Terry Wall, Mark Hudspith and Mark Brown retained second place, with past-champions, Belgrave finishing third. Gateshead (45th), Chester Le Street (51st) and North Shields Poly (62nd) were the region's only other representatives on the day, though all fielded weakened teams. Morpeth B squad with only six runners competed creditably up to halfway.
Defending champions, Chester Le Street had to be satisfied with bronze in the Womens' 6 stage race. The title went to Aldershot, Farnham & District for whom European Junior Cross Country champion, Steph Twell clocked the fastest time on the final leg.
Kathryn Waugh finished 12th on leg 1 for the Durham club, with Tracy Laws moving up two places on leg 2. Freya Murray lifted them into 4th on leg 3, with the 6th fastest overall time.
Emma Waterhouse dropped to 5th on leg 4, with Morag McDonnell and Alyson Dixon both moving up one place on the final legs.
Sadly there were no other North East teams competing.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Initial info from George Patterson by phone. Results on race-results website by 7.30pm. Times seemed slow probably due to hot weather. Leg positions were: SM: Gateshead (43,36,24,29,34,36,36,37,38,42,45,45), Chester Le Street (39,35,47,49,44,43,43,46,46,50,50,51), North Shields Poly (70,70,67,62,64,63,62,62,62,62,63,62), Morpeth B (37,64,64,65,61,58). The Poly got off to a disastrous start as I understand, their first leg runner (new name to me), had to leave early . Another split came from City of Norwich (16th in Womens' race)): O Walwyn 18:39 leg 6.

North Tyneside 10km Road Race.
North Shields - Whitley Bay.  Sun. 8th April.
Heaton Harrier James Buis sprinted to victory in yesterday's third North Tyneside 10km Road Race covering a route from North Shields to Whitley Bay via Tynemouth.
In the extremely windy conditions, a group of seven soon broke away from the record field of 1400 runners, with Ian Twaddle of North Shields leading at halfway. Buis and visiting athlete, Mike Griffiths from Staffordshire, were clear at 5M with Buis, a Bedlington schoolteacher, dropping his rival in the final 300m. Veteran Tim Field of Sunderland finished in 3rd place, with Morpeth taking the team title.
Helen Lawrence of Wirral, a frequent visitor to the area, repeated her 2006 victory in the Womens' race finishing in 21st place overall. Louise Noble of Sunderland (also 2nd in 2006) finished in second place ahead of Heaton's Helen Astley.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Long drawn-out meeting (10.30am - 4.45pm) with plenty of gaps and a 1hr:100mins lunch break. Weather was glorious however, with little wind. Results courtesy of www.middlesbroughac.org.uk (about 9.30pm). Splits in 600m were 26secs and 52secs. Sigourney Bell went through 400m (paced by Jake Archer) in 61secs.

Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races.
Newburn Riverside Park, Lemington.  Fri. 6th Apl.
Morpeth Harriers easily won the Senior Mens' Relay at yesterday's Elswick Harriers Road Race promotion, at Newburn Riverside Park.
Morpeth held second on the first two legs through Chris Sampson and David Swinburne, before Mark Brown took the lead on leg 3. Ian Hudspith extended the advantage to 1min 50secs on the final leg, bettering his 3-year-old lap record by 4secs.
Sunderland led on lap 1 through Gavin Massingham before Ryan McLeod of the host club moved from 6th to first on leg 2, his time only being bettered by Hudspith. Elswick finished 2nd ahead of the Morpeth B squad. With four teams in the first ten, Morpeth, who won the Northern 12 Stage title five days earlier, look to fielding a strong team in next weekend's National event at Sutton Coldfield.
Dianne Henaghan of Chester Le Street, who still holds the course record when winning the inaugural event at this venue in 2003, easily defeated her mainly younger rivals in the Senior Womens' race. Henaghan came home with 15secs to spare over Loughborough student, Ashley Gibson of Elswick, with Aiveen Fox of Morpeth taking third place. Gina Rutherford of North Shields was the leading Under 17 athlete, as Morpeth narrowly took the team title from Chester Le Street.
Sunderland led all the way to retain the Veterans' Relay title, with first leg runner Tim Field clocking the fastest time.
Rachel Denton of Morpeth was also in record breaking form, taking 16secs off the old figures in the Under 13 Girls' race. Runner-up Sophie Taylor of Birtley was also inside the old mark.
Zoe Armstrong of Morpeth (Under 15 Girls), John Gibson of Gateshead (Under 17 Men), Liam Baister of Gateshead (Under 15 Boys) and Shaun Barrass of Jarrow & Hebburn (Under 13 Boys), were successful in the other races.
