Additional Comments: Only results sent, due to time lapse (there would
have been no chance of inclusion, the next morning !). 63 finishers (last

Police concerns), which had to be changed on night, because of an ambulance
route. A very hilly middle section was now included. Not sure of distance
so have estimated by times. First three broke clear early on. Kirtley had
80m lead over Shepherd at 4M, with Driscoll 100m behind. Richard Driscoll
finished 13th. Mooney (16th) pulled away from Ellison (17th) after 4M.

due to lateness. 283 finishers (last time: 75:07). A fine and bright morning.
Quite mild and little wind. Course proved popular. The only real problems
were caused by the distance from Sports Centre to start/finish (more like
1.5M than the advertised half mile). Sarah Wilkinson finished 23rd. Extra

Mens' 200m reversing placings in the 100m with Border's Craig Telford.
North Eastern champion Titi Ameobi of Gateshead, opened her season with
a victory in the Senior Womens' 100m. Clubmate, Vicky Carmichael finished

Additional Comments: Missed first 35mins of meeting (Hurdles + Younger
100m races), due to major traffic delays at south of Tyne Tunnel (came
from Blyth). Weather was bright but a cool (side) wind blowing. It was
in the direction of the timekeepers' stand ! Probably advantageous in 200m
races. Results courtesy of Sid, Vera and Mrs Betts. A good turn-out including
a lot of late entries. Later finish (4.15pm). Jenny Graham was 4th in SW
100m (13.0). Pleased to see that Stephanie Hopkinson, who has been competing
for quite a while, is now regularly achieving AW standards in the Shot.
Wonder if Tucker and Young had also been competing in Junior League at
Chester Le Street ? Informed by Bill Read that Kirsty Thomas had
set pb in 100 (12.2) and 200 (25.2) (more to follow).

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Coldfield. Sat. 23rd April.
The region's teams struggled in Saturday's National Road Relay Championships
at a cold and windy Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Chester Le Street finished
9th in the Womens' event, with a Morpeth team hit by late withdrawals,
taking 10th place in the Mens' race. Morpeth throwing in the stronger runners
in the early stages, led after legs 3 and 4. After Ivan Hollingsworth's
13th place on leg 1, the in-form Dan Samuels moved up to 3rd on leg 2.
Martin Scaife moved Morpeth into a 43secs lead on leg 3, with Steve Platts
holding a greatlt reduced advantage after leg 4. Morpeth gradually slipped
back after this point.
Three North Eastern athletes did pick up medals however. David Anderson
ran the 7th leg for the winning Belgrave team (26:34), Michael Openshaw
lifted runners-up Birchfield, from 7th to 4th on leg 6 (14:50) and Steve

until the final leg, when Vanessa Raw had another good run, moving up 5

Anne Marie Readshaw Memorial Open Track and
Field Meeting.
Arena 2000. Shildon. Sun. 17th April.
A strong wind affected performances at yesterday's Anne Marie Readshaw
Memorial Meeting at Shildon, which opened the North East Track and Field
season. The sprinters particularly were slowed by the conditions.
A.A.A Indoor 400m bronze medallist, Rabah Yusuf of Border easily won the
200m. Jonathon Powell of Durham University ran a creditable time in the
800m. Best performances on the track came from Gina Rutherford of North
Shields Poly, who defeated Durham's Rebecca Shield in a highly competitive

Probably due to lateness of sending in + London Marathon coverage. Cold
and windy (little wind at home), but bright. Good entry in younger age-groups
(especially Girls), which meant meeting did not finish until 4.15pm (much
later than 2003/4). There were also two 300m races. Other performances
included: SM: 3000: 4 I Archbold (now Quak) 9:59.9 SW 3000: 4 C Gilmore

Nice to see Lorna McMichael back in competition. She finished 4th in U17

A few missing persons. Were they caught out by extra April fixture or the
fact it was 2nd (not 3rd) Wednesday ? Congratulations to Fiona. Apologies

is M50 yet, so played safe. I gather Kathryn Waugh was supposed to take
part, to test her fitness for National Road Relay. Other times included:

Budget Insurance Services Wallsend Harriers
Road Races.
Sun. 10th April.
Steve Hepples of Loftus defeated a good quality field, to win yesterday's
23rd Wallsend Harriers Budget Insurance Services sponsored, 10km Road Race.
Hepples, who clocked the fastest short leg, running for first claim club,
Newham and Essex Beagles, at last weekend's Southern 12 Stage Road Relay,
was intending to attack Colin Walker's 12-year-old course record of 29mins
22secs (this course is now classed as the fastest in the North of England).
However, the prevailing wind on what is for the main part, an exposed course,
soon put paid to these ideas and he was content to sit behind long-time
leader, David Wardle of London Irish. Morpeth's Mark Hudspith joined the
pair in the early stages, but a lack of fitness due to a recent injury
told, and he fell back with 2M remaining. Hepples passed Wardle in the
final km, coming home with 9secs to spare over his rival. Hudspith finished
in an isolated third place, ahead of Mark Hood of Sunderland and Stewie
Bell of Chester Le Street. Paul Merrison of the host club was the leading
veteran, in 10th position. Elswick's Judith Nutt easily won the Womens'
race, crossng the finish line nearly 3mins ahead of Claire McManus of North
Shields Poly, with Alison Dargie of Elswick taking third place. Lynne Marr
of Tynedale in 4th place, was the first veteran.
In the youngsters' races, Morpeth's Rebecca Adams set a new course
record, when winning the Under 15 Girls' event. Jack Martin of Sunderland
(Under 17 Men), Mark Cochrane of Morpeth (Under 15 Boys) and Northern Cross
Country silver medallist, Nathan Reed of Sunderland (Under 13 Boys) were
the other male winners. Elyaeka Sibley of Wallsend and Zoe Armstrong of
Morpeth won the Under 17 and Under 13 Girls' races, respectively.

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Heaton Park, Manchester. Sat. 2nd April.
Morpeth Harriers won Saturday's North of England 12 Stage Road Relay
Championship, for the 6th successive year at Heaton Park, Manchester. The
North East just failed to gain a double victory, when Chester Le Street
finished only 4 secs, behind Liverpool in the Womens' 6 Stage event.
In the Mens' race, Morpeth after a tentative start, moved through
to fifth on leg 3, when Daniel Samuels made up 5 positions. After dropping
to 6th for the next two stages, Nick McCormick moved through to 3rd position
on leg 6, with the fastest short stage time of the day. McCormick was also
the fastest short stage runner in 2004. Morpeth at this point were still
over a minute behind Sale, who had led since leg 4. Leeds City occupied
second position. Martin Scaife brought Morpeth within sight of the leaders
on leg 7, and Tom Ranger took them to the front on leg 8. The lead was
maintained by Terry Wall, before Neil Wilkinson on leg 10, stretched the
advantage to over a minute. Good runs by David Swinburne and Mark Brown
on the final 2 legs saw Morpeth come home 1min 28secs ahead of Sale, with
Leeds 8secs behind in third. For good measure Samuels and Ranger clocked
the 2nd and third fastest times for the Short stage. Scaife's time was
the third fastest long stage. Chester Le Street (10th), Sunderland (13th)
and Gateshead (20th) also gained top twenty positions, and thus qualified
for the National event at Sutton Park, in 3 weeks time.
In the Womens' event, Chester Le Street moved through to third on leg
3, through Alyson Dixon. An excellent run by Sophie Milburn took them to
second on leg 4, with Loughborough student, Vanessa Raw, securing the silver
medal position on leg 5. Liverpool were clear leaders after leg 3, but
Morag McDonnell on the final leg made up 1min 55secs, passing her rival
with 200m remaining, but lost out again on a sprint finish. Her time was
only bettered by Liverpool's 5th leg runner, Jenny Clague. Morpeth, who
lay 5th after leg 3, finished in a creditable 7th position, with Aiveen
Fox moving from 15th to 6th on leg 2.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Results courtesy of G Fecitt
(extra info from race-results website). Weather was sunny and warm (got
quite hot as race progressed). Little wind. A Fun Fare in the Park, meant
there were more people out on the course, than there should have been (will
leave it at that). 52 Senior Mens' teams completed and 33 Senior Women.
Many apologies to Gateshead Ladies, who I overlooked in the results. They

(23), E Wilson 20:26 (21), V Bennett 22:08 (23), C Harrod 19:58 (20) and
D McWilliams 23:01. Leg positions for Chester Le Street were: 7,8,3,2,2
and 2 and for Morpeth 15, 6,5,5,5 and 7. Other splits included: Morpeth

Dickie moved Wakefield from 15th - 12th on leg 4 (18:07) and Rebecca Robinson
moved Kendal from 10th to 4th on leg 4 (17:41). Gemma Phillips led on leg
1. (Since found out last Liverpool runner, went slightly off course). In
the 12 Stage, leg positions were: Morpeth: 11,10,5,6,6,3,3,1,1,1,1,1. Chester
Le Street: 17,15,13,12,12,13,10,9,9,10,9,10. Sunderland: 21,14,15,13,11,12,12,12,12,12,11,13.

5 runners: A Lawrence 28:14 (34), S Kirtley 16:06 (29), R Driscoll 18:19
(36), G Driscoll 31:09 (36), B Groves 18:37 (38). I understand for National,
Mark Hudspith may come in for Neil Wilkinson (who runs London Marathon).
