Story (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!)

Contrary to what his personality shows, Leorio, most probably, is one of the most secretive and mysterious characters among the group. Very little is known about him. But what we do know is that during his early years, Leorio had been studying to become a doctor someday. His dream then was pretty much the same with every other doctor, and that is to be able to help those who need him. But one fateful day came when his best friend, Pietro, became ill. Due to money related problems beyond his control, Leorio wasn't able to save his friend, for he didn't have enough money for the medication, nor is he done with his education. Eventually, Pietro dies. Leorio couldn't help but carry the burden of blaming himself as the cause of his friend's death.

With thus being said, Leorio then promised himself and his friend that he will live his life paying the debt made by his mistake (which, personally, I think was not; Leorio's just too emotional ^^;). He decided to continue being a doctor, who not only heals the sick, but also does the job for free. This had become his purpose to live, and even up until he becomes a hunter, the same goal runs through both his mind and heart.

Personality:

As opposed to the popular belief that Leorio's character seems to be derived from Kuwabara Kazuma of Yu Yu Hakusho (Mr. Togashi's most famous work), I must say that I disagree. I think Leorio is more charming, witty, and pretty much more talented. He's also more debonair, who knows how to control himself (though slightly). For one thing, I never saw Leorio cry *snickers*. Now don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Kuwabara, but neither do I like him. All I'm saying is that Leorio's character is entirely his own, with his own purpose in living and strengths. Now, end of discussion.

At first, Leorio seems to be this obnoxious, money-obsessed guy who cares for nothing except his purpose of being a hunter, money and women. But later on, his personality is gradually being shown as someone softer and less aggressive compared to the initial impression that had been given to him. In the early episodes, he is shown as someone who AT LEAST knows how to feel obliged to do something for someone, which was during the time he had saved Gon just after they met. But still, that wasn't a major nice thing just yet because here comes Kurapika, whom Leorio then starts to piss off every chance he gets (in fairness, Kurapika did annoy him back *sweatdrops*). Also, he seems to have a short fuse. He gets easily angered, but I say he's just emotional ^_^

Leorio is friendly and nice when he needs to be. He is understanding (well, maybe not as much as Gon, but let's just say that Leorio's kindness is more on the plausible, less naive point of view). He values his friends as much as he values anything. More than money even. Money, after all, isn't even his top priority. Money was just there for him to be able to fulfill his dream, which, in itself, had its roots taken from his love for others in the first place.

He may not look like it, but he's actually very smart and clever. One of his strong points is that he is street-smart. Being a naturally social person, together with his wits and experience, he is able to purchase a lot of things for very low prices. He even brags that he can get some items for free!

Reason for becoming a Hunter

As previously said, Leorio wishes to become a doctor who helps other people for free. But this dream requires a very much large sum of money. No normal person can ever possess such amount, so he decided to become a Hunter. He realized that by being so, he can be able to obtain the much needed amount that would be large enough to sustain his educational and daily needs and perhaps the right tools and medicines, so that he need not ask people for payment any longer.

Friends

During his journey to become a Hunter, Leorio first meets up with Gon, a young boy of 12 who also wishes to become a Hunter to find his father. Gon is somehow an innocent and gravely naive boy who seems to trust even the most untrustworthy person in the world. Maybe at first, Leorio had felt the obligation to look after the kid, being that he is older and that Gon seems far too vulnerable to be left alone. But later on, Leorio begins to respect Gon's strengths and skills, and becomes one of the boy's best friends even after the Hunter Exam.

The next person he meets after Gon is Kurapika, who, as most fans have concluded (including myself ^_^) was Leorio's best friend. Generally, Kurapika is calm, quiet and keeps mostly to himself. But after meeting Gon and Leorio, he seems to open up little by little. His friendship with Leorio is some sort of a love-hate relationship. They tend to fight half the time they're given the chance to be together. Leorio's favorite past time seems to be teasing Kurapika for some reason, usually about his gender (which, true to his word, had stopped by the way when he finally saw how good Kurapika was in fighting *sweatdrops* Oh come on, Kurapika-sama won't beat you up! Much anyway, blehehehe!). And when he's not, Kurapika in turn says something that DOES trigger Leorio's quick-tempered attitude, which all goes back to the fighting issue. But nevertheless, they also tend to share each others' pasts and secrets on the other half, which also includes comforting words that one would be surprised to hear right after witnessing their previous fights ^_^; The reason for their closeness might be because they are the more mature side of the group. While Gon and Killua would play on one end, they would talk and admire the two in the other. I think acting babysitters--I mean, watching over the two boys became their hobby *sweatdrops*.

The last member of their little group is Killua, whom Leorio met during the late parts of the Hunter Exam. Killua's identity started off as a mysterious young boy who seemed to care about nothing that goes on in the Hunter Exam. Leorio, similar to what he had done to Kurapika, had acted quite violently towards Killua, saying that the boy needed to show a bit more respect and those other things. Killua seemed to have befriended Gon at first, but being Gon's companions, Leorio and Kurapika had somehow gotten to know Killua just as well, who turns out to be not even half as bad as Leorio thought he was.
