The operating system is an integrated
set if systems program that manages the
resources
controls the overall operations of a computer, and functions as an interface between the
computer and the users.
In simplest terms, the operating system handles all the tasks performed by the control unit of CPU. It provides a background in which the programme can run. It makes sure that the limited resources are used most efficiently.
Without an operating system, we would have to invent from scratch simple function such as: displaying text on a screen; outputting text to a printer; and reading or writing disk files.
