Title

9-11 Remembered

Angel Tree/Mitten Drive/ Crisis Center Collections

Exhibit Explanation

The 9-11 projects tied in rememberance of the events and the history of French Canada. "Je me souviens" is a phrase used in Quebec to remember to struggles and hardships of their heritage. The flag was created in the hall as a part of the open house presentation on 9-11. The community was invited to the school to participate in a ceremony to honor our local firefighters, to sing patriotic songs, and to visit our classrooms.

For thirteen years or more, the French classes have been holding holiday collections. Some years we have worked alone and at others we have teamed with the Spanish classes.

Rationale

Our school community is actually a combination of several small communities. The one place that all can gather is the high school. The projects that are used in this domain involve all of our areas. The Lions, Legions and other organizations joined in the 9-11 open house. Additionally, the collections that the classes make are run by the students. They collect the money, decide how much to contribute, contact people as needed and advertise.

Self-Evaluation and Reflection

The community though varied is brought together in our building. I need to keep better records of the the things that the students do so that they may be included as part of the portfolio community activities.

How Observed and/or Verified

The collections were advertised daily in the school announcements and on the student television news program. Students appeared on the program and explained what the center is and why things were needed for the people at the center. The FCCLA classes made teddy bears for the collections and other classes and staff members also contributed.

Validation of Student Learning

Many of our students had never heard of the county crisis center prior to our collections, but they could discuss the center on camera after the project began.

The students wrote journals, made posters and created other products in relation to the 9-11 rememberance.

The collections were successful and student organized.
