Introduction

This standard is met by planning lessons that require the students to use literacy and critical thinking skills. The lessons must also be aligned with state and local standards.

Exhibit Explanation

This project requires students to research French Christmas traditions on a variety of Web sites. After taking notes, the students create a book. The book should be hand illustrated and contain three sections. The first part of the book is to be for children, contain information on the traditions, vocabulary, etc. The second part of the book should be games in French. The third part should include songs for the holiday in French. The book is to be decorated and bound. The students finish the project by writing a journal comparing the French and American holidays.

Rationale

This lesson meets the domain requirements by having students research, read, interpret, and write a compare/contrast journal. The project is aligned to the Indiana State Standards. The local curriculum is aligned to the state standards.

Self-Evaluation and Reflection

The project went well, however it may have been more effective to require a series of smaller products due to time constraints.

How Observed and/or Verified

This project is verified through student products: journals, books, photos and tests. Additionally, students take pre and post vocabulary tests.

Validation of Student Learning

The vocabulary pre and post-tests show that all students improved their French holiday vocabulary. The journals show that the students understand the French holiday traditions and that they are able to compare and contrast the two.
