Second Resurrection and Second Death

Rev 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Here we are told that those who take part in the first resurrection (Rapture) will not be followed by those who take part in the second resurrection until 1000 years later. Since there is a first resurrection, it follows that the next one would be called the second resurrection even though this name is not found here in Rev 20. Thus there will be a second resurrection for those not raised during the first resurrection and also for all those who will die during the 1000 year period between the first and the second resurrection.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great standing before God and the books were

Those not raised in the first resurrection will not be raise again until the second resurrection at the end of the 1000 years. It is popularly believed among most bible students that the great White Throne Judgment occurs at the start of the 1000 years. However, this would contradict what is written in Rev 20.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

This is the second resurrection where everyone not raised in the first resurrection plus those who die during the kingdom period will be brought back to life to appear for judgment. Should there be any mortals left alive at this time, they too will be taken to appear here.

Their works would be the things that they did and how they showed their faith. For those who died during the tribulation, it will especially be, did they accept the mark of the beast or were they faithful unto death?

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Thus we can see that after this, there will no longer be any mortals left alive on the earth. This means that the tribulation will no longer be able to be repeated or equaled as there will no longer be any mortals to take part it it. This means that it truly will not be able to be equaled again. Notice the second death does not occur until the end of the 1000 year Kingdom of Christ.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Not being found written in the book of life would be those not making the decision to be faithful and also those who did but failed to remain faithful resulting in their names being blotted out of the book of life. This is the second death, from which there is no more life. It will be total destruction.

John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Here we have Jesus describing the general resurrection for every one remaining in the death state. This would include all who were not included in the first resurrection and all those who died during the 1000 year Kingdom of Christ. After this resurrection, they all must appear before the Great White Throne Judgement. For some, they will be granted eternal life. For others it will be judgement of damnation and the second death of Rev 20:14.

Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.

This is the second resurrection which occurs at the end of the 1000 year Kingdom of Christ. Some of the dead "sleep in the dust" will be raised to everlasting life. The rest will face shame and everlasting comtempt, the second death.

Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

This is the second resurrection which will occur at the end of the 1000 year Kingdom of Christ. Some will be judged just and rewarded with eternal life, the rest will be judged unjust and condemned to the Second Death.
