Cleaning up the Aftermath of the Battle

Ezek 39:9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:

This is telling us that it is going to take seven years to destroy the weapons of war which will lay on the ground every where.

Ezek 39:10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down [any] out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.

This is telling us that there will be no need for firewood as the destruction of the weapons of war will provide the fires needed.

Ezek 39:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, ... and they shall call [it] The valley of Hamongog.

This is telling us that most of the very large invasion force will die there. The dead bodies of the invaders wll be strewn in the fields and mountains throughout Israel. Hamon god is a Hebrew word for "the multitude of God," which will be the name of the vast cemetary for the dead invaders of Israel.

Ezek 39:12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.

The fact that it will take 7 months to bury the dead from the attacking army of Gog points to how large a number will be of the dead bodies spread around on the ground at the end of that day. So many that it will take 7 months to bury them.

Ezek 39:13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury [them]; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.

Here we are told that it will be the people of Israel who still do the burying and they will gain renown for it. But most of all the Lord God will be glorified in that day by those events.

Ezek 39:14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.

This is telling us that the bodies that are easy to locate will be buried during the 7 months. Then afterwards there will be search parties going through the land to locate the ones who are not out in the open. These also will be buried by teams of men regularly employed. Thus this will be a full time job for some, going out, locating and burying the remaining dead bodies.

Ezek 39:15 And the passengers [that] pass through the land, when [any] seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.

This is giving us further detail on how the search and burial crews will work. Notice that it mentions a man's bone. They are no longer to find dead bodies as the birds and animals will eat flesh and what is not eaten will decay so that mostly only the bones are left. A marker will be placed near the bones and the buriers will go about locating the bones near the markers and burying them.

Ezek 39:16 And also the name of the city [shall be] Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.

This is telling us that there will be a city near the valley of Hamon Gog here the fallen are buried. Perhaps this will be where those who labor to gather the bones and bury them will live. Thus they shall cleanse the land.

Ezek 39:17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, [even] a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.

This is a call to the birds and beasts to come and feast upon the bodies slain by the Lord in that day.

Ezek 39:18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.

This is telling us that not even the rulers and leaders of the invaders will escape. Notice the reference to the fatlings of Bashan and the other animals normally sacrificed by Israel. Those who heard these words by the prophet Ezekiel would instantly understand what he meant.

Ezek 39:19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.

Here we are told that all of the birds and animals involved in the clean up of the battle will be able to eat until they are full. Probably they will be able to eat until they are full. Probably they will be able to do this for a number of days after the battle is over.

Ezek 39:20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.

Here is another reference to the birds and animals being filled at the Lord's Table with the bodies of the dead mighty men and all the men of war.

Ezek 39:21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

Again we find a reference to the Lord's glory being revealed to the nations as they see His judgment executed.
