Leicester Socialist Alliance

Who We Are

The Socialist Alliance was formed in the wake of the massive disappointment in New Labour experienced by working class people throughout the country. Labour promised that things could only get better. The reality is very different. The gap between the rich and the rest is still increasing, pensions are still woefully inadequate, and millions of people are still existing (not living) on poverty level benefits. And all this in the fourth richest country in the world. The problem is not any lack of money to improve people's lives - it's who controls society's resources.

New Labour is no longer a party for ordinary working people and their families. Blair's team are in hock to big business, and the giant corporations are calling the tune. We've seen an almost seamless continuity between the policies of the last Tory government and the present New Labour one - the only real difference being that what Mrs Thatcher used to do with a snarl, Tony Blair does with a smile.

In international policy, New Labour is happy to ride on the coat-tails of the United States, supporting the US administration's new imperialist policies in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The result has been widespread slaughter and starvation, with an increase in racism and curtailment of civil rights at home.

The Socialist Alliance was formed to bring together individuals and organisations to the left of New Labour, in order to create a new type of political party - one that is focused on supporting the struggles of ordinary people against racism, capitalism and war. Here in Leicester the local branch of the Socialist Alliance meets regularly and campaigns on local and national issues. If you are against the drive to war, the upsurge in racism and the profiteering fat-cats of global capitalism, come and join us!
