In the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union had arrived on the moon. Better late than never. Spurned by their failure to win the race to the moon, the U.S.S.R. embarked on what it hoped would recapture the space race for the motherland.
They began to prepare for a permanent presence on the satellite. The United States perceiving a greater threat if the Russians were to have to control a moonbase, scrambled and quickly to follow suite.
By the 1980s, both superpowers had a significant presence on the moon and continued to keep both sides in check.
However, by the sping of 1986, the Soviet Union began shuttling up cargo and materials at an accelerated rate. U.S. intelligence received critical information that the Soviets were going to move against the American held terriorties of Luna.
Emergency orders were enacted and, while most of the supplies never reached Moonbase Freedom, the Americans were well prepared when the Soviets attack came. |
