Ingredients

2 1/3 cups sifted cake flour 
2 1/2 tsp double-acting baking powder 
a little less than 1/2 tsp salt 
a little more than 2 tsp sugar 
6 tbs butter 
5 tbs milk or light cream 
2 eggs 
2 tsp vanilla extract 
a little more than 2 tsp sugar 
cinnamon 
nutmeg 
grated orange peel 
allspice 
unsweetened cocoa powder (this is optional)

Start heating oven to 450 F. Into bowl sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add spices to taste - a very liberal dose of each, especially of the cinnamon. You know you've got enough spices when you can SEE them all. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, wielded scissor-fashion, cut in butter until the consistency is like corn meal. Blend in milk/cream. Separate 1 egg, reserving 1 tbs of the white for glaze, and beat the remaining eggs together (add a tsp of vanilla if you like) and add them to the flour/butter mixture as well.

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough 1/2" thick. Cut into 3" squares, and cut each square into 2 triangles. Or, for drop scones, make a medium-sized ball of dough with your fingers. Arrange on greased cookie sheet. Brush each one with the remaining 1 tbs of egg white, slightly beaten. Sprinkle each lightly with sugar.

Bake for 10 minutes, or until they seem slightly golden around the edges and done. Serve hot with tea.

Elven HellHound Stew

*Note:Try Serving with a loaf of French Bread and either peaches or pears  
**Note: Stew Meat may be substituted for Hell Hound if hunting is scarce.  
*** Note: Serves 4 Humans/2 Giants/6 Elves

2 Hell Hound Meat, trimmed and cut into 1 inch cubes  
2 whole onions, medium size, cut into � inch strips  
1 tbsp. olive oil  
2 cloves garlic, minced  
1 14oz can Tomatoes, stewed Italian, undrained  
� cup ogre/beef broth  
1 tsp. Basil leaves, dried and crushed  
� tsp. Red Pepper, crushed  
2 tbsp. Cornstarch  
4 whole zucchini, medium sized, cut into � inch slices  
� cup Parmesan cheese, grated  
1 8oz mushrooms, drained

In large saucepan or Dutch oven, cook meat, onions, and garlic in hot oil over medium-high heat for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add tomatoes, broth, basil, and red pepper, bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for one hour or until meat is tender. Dissolve cornstarch in 2 tablespoons water, stir into stew.  
Add zucchini, cook uncovered for 10 minutes or until zucchini is tender. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and serve.

8 ounces cauliflower florets  
 3 carrots, diced  
 2 celery stalks, diced  
 2 cups vegetable stock  
 1 tablespoon curry powder  
 8 ounces half-and-half  
 1 clove garlic, minced  
 dash of ginger  
 salt, pepper, parsley to taste

Bring stock to boil.  Add vegetables andspices; reduce heat and cover and simmer 20 minutes.  Add half-and-half and bring back to a boil, then reduce heat again.  Allow the soup to thicken, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.  Season to taste.  Serves six. Preparation time: about 50 minutes.

Mirkwood Cookies

Sift together 2 1/2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of double acting baking powder, and teaspoon of salt. Cream 3/4 cup of butter. Gradually add 1 cup of brown sugar (granulated brown sugar works well) , creaming well. Blend in 1 unbeaten egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla and beat well. Melt 1 1/2 squares (1 1/2 ounces) of unsweetened chocolate; set aside to cool. Add the dry ingredients gradually to the egg mixture. Mix thoroughly. Remove 2/3 of the dough to a floured pastry board. Stir 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda into the chocolate. Blend the chocolate mixture into the remaining 1/3 of the dough. Chill if necessary for easier handling. Roll half of the light-colored dough into a 10 by 4 inch rectangle. Shape half of the dark (chocolate) dough into a 10 inch roll and place on the rectangle of light dough. Mold the light dough around the dark dough and wrap in foil. Repeat with the remaining dough. Chill for at least 2 hours.Cut the dough into slices 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Place 2 slices together on a greased cookie sheet to resemble eyes. Pinch the corner of each slice to give a slant-eyed look to the cookie. Place a chocolate chip into the center of each eye. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven. Remove from the baking sheets at once. Store between layers of foil in a flat, covered container. Makes approximately 3 1/2 dozen cookies.
