Welcome in the City of Lights, the more beautiful capital of the world.
I wish you la bienvenue, dear Kindred, in the Eternal Paris, in the name of all the Kindred. As it is proper, by the Traditions, I will ask you to take a little of your time to go to the Louvre where our beloved Prince, François Villon --Yes, the famous poet...-- awaits your arrival with caring curiosity...
Mhmm?... Yes, he already knows about you. It is his duty to be the most perfect host and protector of this lovely city. And so, to know about who comes to, and who goes from Paris...
You will probably notice, while in your Pérégrinations in the capital of the Toreador, that its beauty needs a very special attention to its security...
''Pérégrinations''? Mhmm. Yes, visit... Or walk... Your french is very far from perfect... C'est fâcheux.
No, it's not too serious, but still, C'est fâcheux.
En effet, we're in France, and it's rather normal that your own dialect, even if understood, is not really appreciated. Of course even François Villon, who will refuse to talk any other language beside french, know the writings of the greatests authors, like Shakespeare, who was a genius... Even if no one know or knew who he really was, or of what nationality... And the traduction by Charles Beaudelaire of the novels of Edgar Allan Poe was the greatest contribution to the fame of this author, whose writings should be in any library digne de ce nom. It's too bad that you, people of the United States of America (by the way, how gauche to name oneself about a continent instead of one of the many countries of this continent...), had the regrettable behaviour you had... You know: Treating him like a degenerate... Tsk tsk...
You'll probably meet the lovely Ligeia somewhere in Paris... She claims to have been the muse of Poe... You doubt it? It's understandable for someone as... Ahem... So far from the City of Lights... You will understand when you'll meet her...
Coming back the Poe's sad end, It's one of the reasons that convinced François Villon to keep France as the patrie of the culture. I can't keep from mentionning the Exception Culturelle asked by the France at the signature of the GATT. Yes, it really was François Villon, who used his tremedous influence among his friends the ''american'' artists, who supported France's courageous decision.
Yes... France radiates like a star in this world of darkness. I will not bother you with the other cultural victories of the Toreador in all the world. The UNESCO, based in Paris, for example, was a real important addition to the pitiful United Nations Organisation. As the UN forces suffer from failures to fiascos, like protecting the population of the ex-Yougoslavy, the power of the UNESCO moves mountains... Quite litteraly!...
You must have heard about the salvation of the Temples of Ramses II and Nefertari in Abu Simbel? Or the Philae island moved stone by stone out of range of the Nasser artificial lake? Nous ne sommes pas peu fiers of this cooperation between us, Toreador, and some Setites art lovers, fearing to see their millenary monuments disapearing, out of range of the future generations curious senses.
Yes, you will see Setites in Paris. They are welcome here, if they follow the Traditions and Edicts, of course. And of course, we are among the lucky Cainites authorized-- Que dis-je! Invited!-- to come in millenary Egypt... In the other hand, Assamite are not accepted here... We believe their very presence threaten the First and Sixth Traditions.
A propos, talking about Traditions, I would ask you to give all your attention to them, and, to give the same, or even more to the Edicts of François Villon, which complete the Traditions, legacy of Caine. We are, we parisians, very touchy when it comes to the respect of our laws. Ask the Brujah...
But I must let you now, as you reached your destination. Walk to the magnificient glass pyramid, and give your name to the guards. Don't fear to break the Masquerade, as they are loyal Ghouls. They will guide you to our most beloved Prince...
Paris, la nuit...: I believe each parisian Vampire Storyteller designed his own Paris by Night. Here's our version, inspired by the ''Paris, de nuit'' by Yann Golanski, and completed with the information contained in the France sourcebook, by Ludis International and White Wolf. In reality, each ST of our club has a PC with a browser, so, as a HTML file is easier to read (because of all the hypertext thing) than a paper book, and easier to change (and more ecologic), we decided to create this HTML version...
You will probably be middly shocked by some comments made by parisian Kindred, or even by the number of french words. We believe it's necessary to understand what would be the feelings of a non-french Kindred coming to Paris. French people are, we believe, somewhat proud of their ''culture'', and they easily boast themselves among others (It's not a typical french trait, but it is very pronounced in the ''Culture milieu'').
We appologize sincerely for those comments, but believe us, our NPCs (most of them Malkavian, Ventrue or Toreador, and even Brujah, Elders or Ancillae) don't!
Remember the french tongue was, for some time, the tongue used in all the european courts (''Les Amies Noir'' from the Clanbook: Lasombra, is an example of a breach of the most elementary gramatical rule: It should have been ''Les Amies Noires'', ou ''Les Amis Noirs'', but not this). This changed a lot in our world, but was magnified in the Paris of the World of Darkness: Every parisian Elder will have a very cold reaction to people who doesn't know ''how to talk properly''. They will answer in their interlocutor's tongue but with a most ourtageous use of french words, or will simply answer in french. The more ''integrists'' will not even bother themselves to aknowledge the question and will simply ignore the stranger.
Ah, yes: The year datation is given in a most french way (!): 356 av.JC (Avant Jesus Christ) or -356 means 356 BC, while 1345, or 1345 ap.JC simply means 1345 AD. The same philosophy is upheld with the MKSA system (meters, kilograms, seconds, Amperes) instead of the Inches, feet, yards, etc. (I plan in putting a table where you will be able to make easy convertion). Et encore: with the datation system: 24/05/1871 means 24 May 1871 (day/month/year) (Er... a very important night, most Brujah remember, believe me...).
Hope you'll like it!
P.S.: Some characters have still to be worked through: We're merging our different Chronicles, and so, some Background areas, or even some characters are to be changed... Don't be surprised if you see some changes.
