The American Legion Harry Higgins Post 88 Scholarship

WOODROW W. CARBERRY SCHOLARSHIP

1. Background: The Woodrow W. Carberry Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 from a bequest in the estate of Woodrow W. Carberry, a life member of American Legion Harry Higgins Post 88. Funds for the annual scholarship(s) are derived from interest accrued by investment of the original bequest.

2. Scholarship: The Scholarship will be awarded annually in an amount up to one-thousand dollars ($1,000). The Scholarship Board may, at its discretion, award the available funds to more than one applicant. The Scholarship will be awarded without regard to race, color, national origin, or sex.

3. Eligibility:
   
a.  Applicants must be a child or grandchild of a member in good standing of Harry Higgins Post 88, American Legion, or a deceased member.
    b.  Applicants must be a graduating high school senior; or having already graduated from high school, has not completed the first year of college.
    c.   Applicant must have an overall grade/point average of 2.5 or higher in high school, and the same in college if enrolled in the first year of college.
    d.   Applicant must plan to attend a four-year college or university.

4. Application Process:
   
a.   The application shall be made by completing pages 1-3 of the Application Form, and returning the same to American Legion Post 88, 1338 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805, Attention: Chairman, Woodrow W. Carberry Scholarship Fund
by no later than 
April 5th of the year applying.
    b.   It is the applicant's burden to establish proof of relationship to a current or deceased member of Post 88. The current membership card number is normally sufficient.
    c.   A transcript of the applicant's high school grades must accompany the application. If the applicant is already attending a college/university, a transcript of pertinent college grades must also accompany the application.
    d.   The applicant may also attach other documentation or letters if desired.

5. Other Information:
   
a.   Scholarship application will be available at Post 88 beginning February 1st each year.
    b.   Completed application must be submitted back to Post 88 by
April 5th.
   
c.   Each applicant will be contacted by the Woodrow W. Carberry Scholarship Board to schedule an interview and will be conducted prior to April 30 if possible. The Board has the discretion to waive interviews.
   
d.   The Scholarship Board will consider each applicant's financial need and character in its decision, and will also consider an applicant's military service.
    e.   The Scholarship Board will select a first, second, and third choice. These applicants will be so informed.
    f.   The Scholarship will not be awarded to an applicant who has been designated to receive any other scholarship given by Post 88 or by the Post 88 Ladies Auxiliary.

6. Award of the Scholarship Funds:
    a.   The applicant(s) selected to receive the Scholarship must show proof of acceptance/enrollment as a full-time student in a four-year college/university by September 1st of the following school year.
    b.   If an applicant selected to receive the Scholarship fails to enroll in a college/university by September 1st, or otherwise defaults, the Scholarship will be awarded to the applicant selected next in order of placement.
   
c.  If a Scholarship recipient withdraws from college/university during the school year following receipt of the Scholarship, any funds remaining from the award must by returned to Post 88. 
 
   d.  Normally Post 88 will send the Scholarship funds directly to the recipient's chosen college/university. Post 88 may exercise other options for delivery of the Scholarship funds if sending the money directly to the college/university is determined to be disadvantageous to the recipient.     

7. Questions pertaining to the Woodrow W. Carberry Scholarship may be directed to the Chairman of the Scholarship Board by writing or calling Post 88 at (419)289-3633.     

LA VON CARBERRY SCHOLARSHIP (AUXILIARY)

An amount up to and including $1,000 will be given to the winner/winners of a scholarship in memory of Lavon Carberry. 

1. Eligibility:
    a.  Recipient shall be a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a member in good standing of Unit 88. 
    b.  It is the applicant's responsibility to show proof of relationship to person for eligibility. 
    c.  The applicant of this scholarship will not be eligible for this scholarship if they have been designated as a recipient of any other scholarship by Harry Higgins Post 88 or Unit 88. 
    d.  The scholarship will be given to a high school graduate with an academic grade average of 2.5 or more. A transcript of grades from school records must accompany the application.   
    e.  Declared Financial Verification of Income must accompany the application and will be considered in selection process. 

2. Application Process:
    a.  Applications forms are to be returned by
May 1 to:

    b.  Applicant must have intent to enter college the fall following graduation from high school. 

NOTE:  If the committee declares more than one person as a recipient of the scholarship, they will have the option to divide the money as the need and amount of money available.

 

The American Legion Harry Higgins Post 88 Scholarship

The American Legion Harry Higgins Post 88 Scholarship is open to any senior at Ashland High School, regardless of race, color, sex. or national origin, who has a cumulative grade point average of not lower than 2.5, and not higher than 3.5.

Any student who desires to apply for this Scholarship must complete an application form, and return it to the AHS guidance office no later than April 10 of the graduating date.

A transcript of the applicant's courses and grades must accompany this application. The applicant may attach other documents as desired.

A photograph (senior picture or similar) of the applicant must be firmly attached. Applicant's name should be written on the back of the photograph.

Statement of Applicant: The Applicant must fully understand that:
    1.  The deadline for submission of the application is April 10.
    2.  The American Legion Harry Higgins Post 88 Scholarship Committee will be composed of active members. The decision of the Scholarship Committee will be final.
    3.  The amount of the Scholarship will be one-thousand dollars ($1,000)
    4.  Normally Post 88 will send the Scholarship funds directly to the recipient's chosen college/university. Post 88 may exercise other options for delivery of the Scholarship funds if sending the money directly to the college/university is determined to be disadvantageous to the recipient.
    5.  If the selected recipient has not enrolled by the Fall term of the following school year, this Scholarship will be withdrawn.

Only completed application packages will be considered, that includes the following:
    1. Completed application pages one (1) through three (3).
    2.  Proof of Cumulative GPA not lower than 2.5 and not higher than 3.5.
    3.  Photograph (senior picture or similar)
    4.  Meet the deadline for applying (April 10, 2003)
    5.  High School transcript (certified copy)
    6.  Additional documentation/letters as desired (OPTIONAL)
