| The public career of Albert B. 'Happy' Chandler spanned 50 years and included 2 terms as Governor of Kentucky, 6 years as a United States Senator, and a tenure as National Commissioner of Baseball. During his 6 years as Commissioner, black players entered the Major Leagues for the first time, and a player's pension fund was established. Both controversial and beloved, it was he who provided the opportunity for Branch Rickey to integrate Baseball. It is for his efforts and accomplishments that he is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. |
