Happy Chandler
Classic
2001 Inaugural Season
The public career of Albert B. 'Happy' Chandler spanned 50 years and included 2 terms as Governor of Kentucky, 6 years as a United States Senator, and a tenure as National Commissioner of Baseball. During his 6 years as Commissioner, black players entered the Major Leagues for the first time, and a player's pension fund was established. Both controversial and beloved, it was he who provided the opportunity for Branch Rickey to integrate Baseball. It is for his efforts and accomplishments that he is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
An exhibition game to be played each year to celebrate the commencement of a new season
The Inaugural Happy Chandler Classic will be played by pre-season All-Star teams from the Legends of Cooperstown American League and National League. In subsequent years, it will be played by past champions of the LOC.
