2001-02 Happy Chandler Classic

NL All-Stars At AL All-Stars                            4/8/01

 

Willie Mays of the Scranton White Elephants was named game MVP at Fenway Park, where the National League All-Star club defeated the American League All-Stars by a score of 7 to 4 in the inaugural Happy Chandler Classic, kicking off the 2001-02 Legends of Cooperstown season. Say Hey went 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI in the victory.

 

The Nationals had 3 runs cross the plate in the top of the 4th inning.  The key at-bat

was by Willie Mays, who silenced the stadium when he rifled a three-run blast deep into the

upper deck in left field off of Newark ace left-hander Sandy Koufax.  The NL finished with 12 hits while the AL ended up with 9. 

 

The win went to Three Finger Brown of Scranton(1-0), who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Mordecai’s teammate, Hoyt Wilhelm was credited with his 1st save.  Koufax was tagged

with the loss, giving up 5 runs in 2 innings of work. Hank Aaron of Virginia added a 2-run pinch-hit home run for the NL, while Missouri shortstop Honus Wagner went 2-4 and drove in a pair of runs, and Chicago’s Lou Gehrig also drove in 2 in a losing effort for the AL.

 

Next year’s game will feature the defending champion of the Legends of Cooperstown 2001-02 season versus an All-Star team from the opposing league. In future years, the Happy Chandler Classic will pit the defending champions of past seasons against one another, to determine who is the best team and season defending champion of all time.
