Find out why Motor Trend bestowed the first Car Of the Year award of the '90s to the Acura Legend. Perenially listed as a "Best Buy" by Consumer Reports' annual Used Car Buying Guide, this pristine example of a Legend will not disappoint. A unique combination of elegance, style, and power, Acura's flagship sedan/coupe was widely regarded as one of the finest cars available, and its discontinuation following the 1995 model year bewildered enthusiasts and industry insiders alike.
1991 marked the first year of a complete model overhaul following the 1990 model year. The 2nd-generation was wider, longer, more powerful, and sported an unmistakably unique style that set it years ahead of any competition (and still looks newly conceived even today, 9 years after its introduction). If I had a dollar for every time someone asks me, "Where'd you get a new Legend?", I wouldn't need to sell this car!
While the interior coddles the driver in leather that stretches to the interior headliner, buyers who opted for the LS package were treated to real wood trim, among other amenities. Powering the 3490-lb. coupe is a 3.2-liter V6, good for 200 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. The broad (by comparison) torque band supplied by this non-VTEC engine means no waiting for VTEC cams to kick in to supply anything more than modest acceleration.
The attention to dual aspects of luxury and performance are stunning - no Honda/Acura car (aside from the $80,000 NSX - although the '94+ Integra GS-R is sporting competition) could soundly beat the post-'93 manually-equipped Legend coupe's performance numbers until the Integra "air conditioning as an option and no sound-deadening material" Type R debuted in 1996. In fact, it outperforms new CLs, TLs, and RLs; even the not-for-US-shores Accord Type R and 2001 CL Type S can't best it! On the skidpad, only the NSX and Type R can out-grip the coupe. Ask yourself which you would rather have: world-class luxury or -.6 seconds on a quarter mile time and +.03 g of grip - the choice is obvious. However, these "debts" can be easily overcome through minor, inexpensive aftermarket modification.
