Nikolai was born into a poor family. By the time he was a teenager he followed many of the boys of his neighborhood into the local gang. He quickly rose through the ranks of the gang, impressing many with his tenacity and unwillingness to back down in the face of oppression. By the time he was in his early 20s he had been noticed by a larger crime syndicate called The Royal Red. The Royal Red had their hands in many pots across Eastern Russia and into Europe. He did the same as he did within his boyhood gang - impressed many and rose through the ranks. This time he had a purpose - he wanted to lead The Royal Red and spread it's influence much farther. He sat at the right hand of the leader for many years before he simply killed him and declared himself the new leader. He had many loyal supporters within the Royal Red and those who didn't agree with him learned quickly to keep their mouths shut.
He has done what he set out to - he is spreading the Royal Red throughout Russia and further into Europe, where is coming up against Alexander North. For now he deals with Alexander and has yet to decide if they can be partners or if he will attempt to engulf Alexander's fledging organization into his own. Nikolai has amassed a huge fortune from the Royal Red's participation in everything from drug smuggling to human trafficking. He makes sure that he is surrounded by loyal people to prevent what happened to the former leader from happening to him.
He knows that he is high on the wanted list for the Grace Foundation - especially after he personally killed on of their members after being alerted to her presence by a mole from within the Foundation itself. He has had a few close scraps with the Foundation sense and on one occasion was stabbed by Frankie Cross, leaving a scar on his chest that he intends to repay one day. He watches his back on all angles because he intends to stay in power until he is too old to do so.
