The wild flowers of Agios Petros in Lefkas(Lefkas,
a Greek island of the Ionian Sea)
Nice
walks in the picturesque paths and roads close to Agios Petros.
Looking
Vasiliki’s bay and campus from Agios Petros
For
many years I used to walk from my village Agios Petros to Vasiliki through the
campus. It is a downward walk perfectly advisable for those who have
problems with their heart like my friends captains Kostas and Labros or some
others who have problems with their height blood pressure like me, or those who
want to make a good long walk in the silence. This
walk lasts 1 ˝ hour and we enjoy it too much every season of the year
especially during the spring.
Last May walking with
Elli my little 11 years old nephew who was not intending to make a walk for 1 ˝
hour as she was not used to do so, I propose her just for fun to gather just one
of any kind of each wild little flower we could find during our walk towards
Vasiliki.
Till then unfortunately I had never noticed the richness of the flowers variety existing so close to the little roads and paths. As captain Dimitris explained later to me there are no more donkeys or horses or sheep to eat the wild grass and flowers during their evening return at homes as it happened some years ago. I have also read that the richness of the variety of the wild flowers is depending on the non use of chemicals and the culture without machines. We gathered (in order to photo them) 48 different wild little flowers in that only walk. Elli confessed me that although our walk lasted 2 ˝ hours she was not tired!!! You see we had to stop every time looking if each flower was a different type and we had to compare them with those we had already gathered. We had to notice and discuss about the details of each so little flower. That was a marvelous and intersting job and exactly this experience I would like to share with you. Here are some photos I prepared with my husband Elias just to give an idea.
Elli and Sandy at home selecting the little wild flowers according to their type.
We repeated this exciting procedure of searching more kinds of wild flowers (about 70 different kinds) during our walks in some other paths and roads (ex. going to Nikoli village for fresh water, coffee and frigadelia ( a savoury of the island) at the only little place and coffee shop of the village and one hour walk from Agios Petros, to the Mesa Vrisi (the most fertile place in the campus) 1 hour walk, to the little road very close to the sea at Ponte (1/2 hour walk), to the depopulated village Roupakia (a deserted village due to the earthquakes but still picturesque ) 1 1/2 hour walk, to Germanika on the mountain an old building, now destroyed, made by the order of Germans during 1941 in order to serve as an observation station to the Ionian Sea ).
