Israel is rarely out of the news, and for several diverse reasons. It is a focus for three major religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - and is liberally littered with regions and sites of particular significance to these faiths. Israel is a small, relatively long and narrow country at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean. Its current total area is under 11,000 square miles. For a small country. It is remarkably 'up and down', Jerusalem, the Capital, is at an altitude of 2,739 feet, yet only 16 miles away lies the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, at 1,300 feet below sea level. Israel has a population of around 6 Million people who have a highly complex cultural mix and the creation of a modern, industrialized and democratic society represents a remarkable achievement of social engineering. It is important to realize that Israel is a well developed country. Its universities and research institutes are of world - class caliber (i.e. Israeli Institute of Technology, located in Haifa, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and of course, Shenkar, for textile technology and fashion.
