300ZX Engine Swap

One of the major things I am thinking about doing this summer to the truck is swapping a used VG30DE (non turbo) 300ZX engine to replace the old TBI (throttle body injected) that came from the factory. The reason for this is that the VG30DE makes a hell of a lot more horsepower, it weighs about the same, its more fuel efficient, has a ton of aftermarket parts available, and installation can be accomplished fairly easily in comparison to other non-Nissan engine swaps such as the Buick V-6. All of the VG-30 series engines supposedly have the same engine block except for the '90 and later turbo 300ZXs. The main difference between the Pathfinder V-6 and the 300ZX V-6 is that the 300ZX has DOHC heads and a bunch of other electronics and intake stuff as compared to the SOHC heads and TBI that the Pathfinder has. This makes for a much smoother and more powerful engine. Besides the top end I think the only other differences may be the engine mounts, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, and probably the 300ZX has a higher compression ratio and stronger bottom end. For the installation you obviously would need the engine, all of its belts and accessories, its ECU and wiring harness, and the rest of its emissions stuff. Since the two engines have the same block the 300ZX engine should bolt right on to the old transmission (nice because you can keep 4X4 without adapters). I have a feeling that the 300ZX has different engine mounts but those can be easily fabricated or they may even be interchangeable or bolt-ons (have to see when I get there). The old oil pan should bolt on to the new block (make sure to do this so it will fit in the Pathfinder engine bay). A custom intake tube will need to be made however this is not hard. Hook up all of the vacuum lines, run the power steering and brake lines, put on all of the emissions accessories, AC stuff, and the engine wiring harness and it should be ready to go. I recommend the non-turbo engines from any of the 300ZX models and any of the '89 or earlier turbo engines. I have been told however that the turbo engines from the '90 and later 300XZs will not fit. Another good source is the old Maximas and some of the Infinity cars. Remember that this is a very involved process and that nothing will be cheap or work the first time. I plan to start this project this summer and I will keep this site updated accordingly.

Here are some Pics that I have come across from the Nissan BBS:

These are from a Japanese site. This is a '90 or later VG30DE (non-turbo).
